You put everything different down to people being "cool".

It's modern, knowledgeable kids doing it the right way, not cool kids.

Why does a website need a www subdomain (which is what the www. is).

As you can probably all tell, this poll wasn't to help me make a decision, it was to find out how wrong people are.

How often, when giving someone a URL (vocally), do you mention the www.? I hope it's never.

I agree, but I guess it's tradition and most people are used to it.

When typing a website, I never type the www. - but that's partially because firefox dos'nt neeed it.

And when giving some-one a web-address I don't say the www. , but every-one on telly does.

Never but visually it looks better with a www.

Not really true - whether the www. is needed depends on the website (specifically its server/s), not the browser. I sometimes buy clothes from routeone.co.uk, but if you enter just "routeone.co.uk" in your browser, oops, does not work. Add the www. and it works. Good example of a poorly set up server there, really both versions should work.

But to be perfectly honest... If it's a .com website I never type www.blahblahblah.com I just type "blahblahblah" and hit ctrl+enter to let Firefox fill in the blanks.

But if both versions work, our wonderful friend Google (and other search engines - apparently they exist!) decides that you have 2 versions of your site with duplicate content, which is why a decision should always be made, and all requests to the "wrong" URL silently redirected.

I've taken the decision to redirect all http://www.* requests to http://*, just because it seems like the most sensible choice. Digg does it, Twitter does it, Pownce does it, every decent company does it.

MySpace and Google force the www., but then Google is a pretty old fashioned company and MySpace has never done anything right.

www. is deprecated.

I always do because invariably if I leave it out people ask if it starts with www.

There are plenty of people who are still not that comfortable and knowledgeable about such things and need walking through things as simple as URLs.

I never do. It reminds me a bit of when my Grandad tries to give me links to websites over the phone.

"It's doubleyou-doubleyou-doubleyou-dot,this is a website-dot-co-dot-uk".
