Let's start from the beginning. I had oft suffered from the inability to patch spore to 1.2 meaning that I had wasted time and money on Creepy & Cute. However I've managed to solve this problem by installing Galactic Adventures beforehand, allowing C&C to install perfectly. Methinks the 1.4 patch works because it's less discriminating, but I'm no computer wizz.
Onto the real problem, everything works fine up until space age. Whenever I open communications with any planet my screen blacks out, and minimizes to the desktop. Then I either have a good response, it restores and it's normal until the communications window is closed; or a bad response, an ATI VPU error flags up telling me the Graphics Accelerator needed to be reset, and asks me if I want to send an error report. I have discovered the most awkward way to carry on, if I 'X' out of the error box and restore Spore then I can close the communications screen after doing what I want, however this goes through the aformentioned drama. Finally, if I want to open the communications screen again, Spore will minimize and then the ATI error message will come up. I can close the ATI message, just not the Spore window. It shifts between active and passive on the start bar when I click, but little else changes: thus I have to go to task manager to end the program. If I attempt to restart the game I get an error message regarding DirectX, and the number 1002 which I've assumed is the error code. A side-effect of this is that it affects scrolling on my computer, if I'm in any program which requires me to scroll up or down, a word processor, the internet browser etc., I find that instead of the smooth scroll the screen normally has, a horizontal line will run up or down it refreshing the screen, as though the new screen was sliding down. I know you'll probably want as much information as possible, so here's my DXDiag. Further information available upon request, provided I can manage to get it. And I have installed Omega Drivers as has been recommended, but they haven't solved the problem. Thank you in advance, LJSify PS, I've just remembered another two slight problems: the blacking out of creature parts, especially when the creature is fairly complicated; and the inability to choose which stage I want to begin at on a new planet, other than cell. I remember that I used to be able to begin at any stage provided I had completed that stage on another planet. Thanks again. ------------------ System Information ------------------ Time of this report: 8/14/2009, 12:38:41 Machine name: BEDROOM-98B53F6 Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090206-1234) Language: English (Regional Setting: English) System Manufacturer: System manufacturer System Model: System Product Name BIOS: BIOS Date: 05/29/07 15:33:54 Ver: 08.00.09 Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz Memory: 2048MB RAM Page File: 1057MB used, 2882MB available Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) DX Setup Parameters: /PackageInstall DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.5512 32bit Unicode ------------ DxDiag Notes ------------ DirectX Files Tab: The file dplay.dll is incorrectly installed in the Windows folder and should be deleted. Thanks for your help YOMOMASOFAT, I drafted my father in to aid me and we discovered that the drivers were the problem. Well, the fact that my Drivers were for a PCIe and not an AGP one. I've managed to get the right drivers installed now. Thanks again
