Default Spore on Mac won't start after patch

I tried to start spore a few hours ago, and i got the message about the new patch. I agreed to download and install it. The patch was applied successfully (albeit really slow, I've noticed other people complaining about that too), but now spore doesn't start anymore. It shows up in the dock as 'running', but after 3 seconds the icon just disappears and nothing more happens.

I tried reinstalling the game and refusing to install the patch, but then the game won't start either. So I reconsented to installing the patch, with the same scenario I described above as a result.

So I get no errors whatsoever, it just plain won't start.

Is anyone having the exact same problem, or better, some solution/workaround/.. ?

edit: I found the problem and solution, see below (post #4)

Patch isnt for Mac right? I think it says that its only for Windows. Read the patch notes.

The patch is also released for Mac now, when you start the Mac version of the game, it gives you the choice to install the patch or not. If you choose no, the game shuts down. If you install the patch (here at least), and try to start the game afterwards, it appears in the dock for a few seconds, then it shuts down (no black screen or splash screen or anything).

For those experiencing the same problem, I found the problem + solution:

Apparently the patch messed up the permission settings on the following folder:
Library/Preferences/SPORE Preferences/wineserver-YOURCOMPUTERNAME

Set the permission settings so that you have read/write permission, delete all other user groups if you can (I could delete them all except 'everyone'), and for the 'Everyone group, set them to read only.

Start SPORE.

Hopefully this saves someone the time and hassle to find a solution for himself.

Hi,

Same problem with two Spore icons appearing in Dock and needing to force quit before Spore will start up.

I have a brand new iMac 24", 3.05 ghz, NVidia 8800, 4 gb memory. Never had Creature Creator installed on it.

From the other messages, is it appearing to be Spore having problems on an iMac 24'" 3.05 ghz system?

EA Support (US/CAD) has been dismal. When I first reported the issue complete with files listing system info and crash reports, they responded with Windows suggestions.

Right now EA Support says to start up Activity Monitor and start killing various processes. So far, it usual causes my Mac to lock up or Spore to never start.

Cheers,

Bob

I have this little theory, this is what it is. When you submit a complaint, they check to see if you have made rude or annoying comments about EA. If you have, they don't bother to help you, partly because they want to teach you some manners, partly because they think it's hilarious.

Default Splash Screen and ::poof::

I re-installed the game and after all the patches got through... it won't start.

After I open the program, there seems to be a flicker of another spore icon along with the one that's already open... but then it goes away, and then I get the splash screen for about 4 seconds, and then :oof:: nothing. Force Quit says Spore isn't even running. I tried everything that's been said on here to fix this I.E. changing Users to Read only and deleting permissions from other users, Checking that all my stuff is up-to-date, Moving cider.oiuau something or another... <--- that's actually made it give me an Error code.

Someone help, this is day 4 of trying to install this game.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: I figured it out! So I installed the game regularly (not in a separate Admin Account) And ran the patches, patches include the following:

iPatch 3.7 The SPORE ICON will say "1632 - 1770"
iPatch 3.7.TG11 "Patch1 - To - Patch2"
iPatch 3.7.TG12 "00Patch2"
iPatch 3.7.TG12 "Patch3 - To - Patch4"

That's where I stopped. Deny the rest of the updates, and then quit Spore if it even starts (mine didn't). Download this (the 5th Patch) http://spore.com/updates/SPO3-Update-002535.tgz

Extract it and open it. You'll get a window to select a program to update, find SPORE.app in your Applications/Spore folder and select update.

The Update will run. and Presto.

Any other problems you could try full instructions here: http://www.spore.com/comm/faq/

Default Same issues!

I'm having the same problems. Installed Spore, installed all the mandatory patches etc. On running the app, it displays the splash screen for about 2 seconds, then vanishes from the screen and the dock.

I've tried changing the permissions as suggested- thank you for researching that Jeroenmoons, but it was unsuccessful.

I've also tried trashing/moving cider.noui and it displays 'Application startup failed, launch path not accessible'.

I've installed it twice already... this seems to be a long standing issue, has it been resolved yet?

Default I got it to work for me

I was having the exact same problem with my new iMac 27" system. I dragged everything from the Applications folder to the trash, emptied it, then installed Spore all over again. I then started Spore and told it NOT to install any updates. The game ran! I then played it for a while, saved the game, then got out and started it again. This time I told it to install the patch. I installed only one patch, then restarted the game to make sure it worked. I did this for each and every patch - they all worked where before NOTHING worked.

I hope this helps others.
