Whenever I try to save the game, I end up with a "Save game failed, Spore will now shut down" message, and apparantly it will reload my last save.
I can't save in the microbe stage, I can't save in the civilization stage. And it is sure as heck annoying to lose 4+ hours of game time... Any suggestions? |

This same thing is happening to me. I can "save" it once (only tried in cell and creature phases btw-same results) where it tells me its saved. If I try again, it gives me that failed error message and quits. Furthermore, even if I save it once, and it tells me the save was successful, if I quit to the menu or leave the game and come back, the save game is gone.
But wait! There's more. This is happening on my laptop only. My desktop works just fine. I played all last night, saving and loading and everything is great. So I decided to copy all of the save data to the laptop, and it loaded that savegame just fine. I even managed to save and load on it-once. After that it not only failed to save again (and closed the game), but wiped out the previous savegame so that when I loaded the game back up, it game me a "corrupt save, tried to restore to a previous version" error, and nothing was there. Both systems are running XP and its the downloaded D2D version. Currently in the middle of another reinstall as well. |

I get this maybe one save in five in tribal and civ stages
Can't find any pattern to it. Windows XP, plenty of free space on my disk.It would be so much more sensible for the game to give a "retry" or "save as..." option when this happens rather than just quitting. At the very least it should give some clue as to *why* the save failed. Very poor. |

Well, the problem seems to be resolved for me. As of my last install, I made sure that I had NO other windows open, no virus or process scanner running, and I killed any unessential processes in the task manager. I'm fairly certain it had nothing to do with the space available on the drive (though if you have minimal space on your drive I wouldnt rule that out as a cause) since I didnt make any more room prior to my last install.
If that's indeed what fixed it though, it would be the first time I've ever had to do that to install a game in 20 years of gaming. I don't know, maybe it was just a fluke-but I am now successfully saving and even transferring save games between my desktop and laptop without a problem. So try closing out everything you have running in the background and try a reinstall. Oh, and it doesnt seem to matter if they are running once the install is done. |
