OK to the people with this bug - there was a rumour that it is to do with the DVD version only (apparently the D/L version was fine... a rumour). But still we'd best leave no cause ue unckecked - the sooner we find the problem the sooner maybe one of us can work out a temporary fix till the patch

To the people with this bug - Are you using the DVD or downloaded version of spore?

I am on DVD

DVD here too.

I did read somewhere to try - go to the appearance editor on your homeworld before leaving. I haven't tried it yet, so I can't tell you if it works or not. Probably not though.
It feels like it's crashing whilst loading a particular file to initiate the solar system to me. Could be completely wrong though.

I have the download version, and I have the same issue when leaving the homeworld after a fight. I don't know any details though.

Mine is using the DVD as well. I'll have a go at selling some turrets tonight in that save game. It may well be a memory leak problem with too many objects on the planet. It occurs to me that perhaps there are rewards left uncollected on the surface after the battle (those gold discs you get for shooting down the ships) and that perhaps there are "too many objects" when leaving. Can anyone elaborate on the state of their planet as they were leaving it? Had they rebuilt everything or not etc?

Also, this thread should be merged with

Similar issue here as well, although I've had it on my own and alien planets, and whether I've been in conbat or not.

DVD version.

EDIT: I've also had a crash that looks the same while just flying around on an alien empire's planet.

I posted a possible fix for SLI users in this thread...

Cannot zoom out of home planet - Gamebreaker bug

Sorry ATI guys I just don't like ATI so I've no idea if this can be replicated but for ATI driver versions (this should make more sense when you read the linky above!)

Cheers

Default Crashalicious!!!

I have been having loads of fun with the game making loads of fun stuff and played streigt through from cell to space with no saves. Imagine my terror when i got to the third mission of dropping the collected creature into one of my cities and the game crashed.
Is there any news about this sort of thing being fixed, after looking at this thread, i can clearly see i am not alone in this matter.

Come on guys, do your jobs!!

Hmm this is strange... i started again in a different game and its not happening. At least we know its not just the DVD ones that are the problem. And i'm on one of the xfx 8800gt cards so its not just the SLIs that are the problem.

Only fix for now is to just maximise the anti bio disaster thingies and get an uber turret asap into your homeworld then (or any other worlds this is affecting). Save before you ever go down to them outside a fight and save regularly otherwise, if you MUST go down to protect/prevent a bio disaster then don't over-right the save you had before. That way you can go back if (rather, when) the game does crash.

I doubt very much that it would be the objects dropped by pirates - i have various things stashed next to 'Rawr-roo City' in my crash free game. Interesting point about planets and colours though... the one that keeps crashing for me is a planet with green seas and blue land.

What colours of homeworld is it happening for everyone else on? (on second thoughts it could be a buggy creature or tree that is on the planet surface as well)

I did some experimenting with this last night. I returned to my homeworld to defend agains the UFOs. Several cities lost their turrets and some coins were dropped.
I left the planet without issue. I returned and rebuilt all my city defences and got stuck on exiting the planet. I tried removing all the turrets but this didn't help. So it's clearly something to do with the cities themselves and/or the number of buildings.

I've had the same problem too. the response from EA was that I've got two monitors...

So switched to running with one, would you beleive that it's still happening?

I've also noticed that the RAM usage creeps up and doesn't go down, especially with the homeworld.

I experienced this crash yesterday. It seems strange that prior to getting the CTD, i had only just installed the M$ SP3 auto update. It's a real pain, because of the amount of times you have to keep going back to your homeworld to defend it.

I'm running an Intel-based Core 2 system on Windows XP Pro 32bit (SP3) with an 8800GTX, X-Fi Gamer and 4 gigs of ram. After getting into a war with several other factions, I crash when leaving my home planet EVERY time. Someone suggested deleting all turrets and blowing up bugged ones... not sure if it was a complete coincidence, but I WAS able to leave the home planet and go back into space. But I can't play the game without turrets protecting my home planet's colonies (they get murdered even WITH turrets). Here's my SporeApp crash report:

Crud. I'm running on two monitors too. I run Spore on the main screen and have a smaller screen with my chat windows open. Has anyone been having this problem while only using one monitor?

I'll give it a try tonight but it seems dubious that this could be the source of the problem given that it only happens if the cities have been rebuilt after an attack.

This suggests a memory leak has has no relation to multiple monitors. the major element here is getting stuck on the planet after we have rebuilt.

Can someone with this problem try and replicate it with Spore in window mode rather than fullscreen? I'll try it this evening.

I've got a Logitech G15 keyboard which shows RAM usage. I have a 8800 GTX, vista ultimate 64bit and 3GB RAM.

After the game loads the usage is at about 52%.
After entering any planet, this jumps to 64%, after which it stays level until I goto my homeworld where it jumps to 72%.

However, this isn't a one time jump. every homeworld visit increases the usage again and again.

Once it hits between 92% and 94% the game crashes.

I've taken to restarting Spore when it hits 90% and that's solved it for me (except having to stop playing pretty often!)

I also got told that it was because Spore wasn't tested on two monitors, and have changed to one with exactly the same results.

After a lot of contact with EA support, and me flat out refusing to use one of my installations by reinstalling, they suggested I post on the forums......

... like anyone who has any input into the game reads these.

I really hope some work is being done on a patch. Anyone heard anything?

To the people with this bug - Are you using the DVD or downloaded version of spore?

I am on DVD

I have the EA Link downloaded version and it happened to me one day. I've been playing it for like a week now and just one day this week it kept happening to me throughout the day...the rest of the week it never happened at all. It provoked me into saving very regularly (CTRL+S...alot quicker than pressing Esc then save and less hassle).

I'm running a Intel Q6600, Nvidia 8800 GTS 640mb & Win XP SP3.

I notice many different problems here.

1. People crashing after leaving homeworld planet.
*either because they spent too much time on it
*after defending from attacks or doing eco missions
*after rebuilding the defenses.

This signs to memory leak.

2. People who crash OUTSIDE homeworld AFTER or During attacks to other empire's colonies.

I never had problem number 1, even though I spent a lot of time collecting all the plants and animals over twenty times. Having 10 cities and full buildings and turrets and artifacts, uberturret on it.

My problem is number 2.

I had this NPC empire right next (1-2 pcs) to my homeworld system.
After I started a trading route (not sure) and eventually an alliance (not sure either) the game started to think my system belonged to that Empire.
How is that? Around my system, there was a orange circle and a orange line connecting my system to the other empire's system (homeworld).

Eventually I tried to attack them and everytime I destroyed/captured them, my game would crash. Ive tried many slightly different things. Breaking trade route before, breaking alliance before attacking. Those didnt worked. And the link between my empire and the npc empire remained.

I decided to sent other allies to attack this empires systems (all system close to me) and after they took over the orange empire system, the link between them and me disappeared. (wich was a bug, so I solved it that way)

That was one way to deal with the situation, but still, I reloaded and tried other things. One of the things I tried was to buy their system next to mine and it worked as well.

Two things I noticed.
When during or after an attack to that orange empire, our relationship went from any color to red it would crash.

Even when I sent all my allies attack each and every orange city, if I was red to them (got red by attacking their colonies, without destroying or capturing them, otherwise it would crash) even after the orange empire systems were all destroyed or captured by my allies MY HOMEWORLD would still have the orange circle around it and by consequence the RED zone circle indicating my homeworld was enemy or belonged to the enemy (!!!???)

So the best solution I found, was send the allies to attack all the orange enemies system, except their homeworld close to mine. Once they had only the homeworld remaining, I bought their system for 5 million. Problem solved.

After that I saved and started to attack other empires, to see if I would crash again during or after any battles, but this time it worked fine. Didnt crashed after battles anymore.

So the problem to me, was that: the orange empire were too close to my homeworld system and the game recognized it as theirs before or after I started a trade route and alliance with them (I dont know what triggered their ownership of my system).

That was one problem.

In other game, I had the same problem but without other symptoms.

An enemy empire red area was overpassing one of my systems. (it wasnt homeworld, just a spice colony far away from my homeworld)
When I attacked their systems, 5-15 seconds after their colony and some of their ships were dead, I would crash.

Its like after every battle, the game start to do those calculations or analysis and it finds a problem. Its not about my computer not being able to handle it, its a game bug. And even if I manage to leave the system without crashing, if I save right after (under those unknown buggy conditions) my save game would get corrupted. So everytime I loaded that game, it would crash, instantly.

I think its somewhat related to overlapping red vs green areas changing after one allie becomes neutral, or enemy, or when you destroy one of their colonies, it cant handle the red area reduction or something.

What I suggest is: save offen.
Create multiple Backup files of the "Game0" and "Game0.old" files. I manually manage them as if their were my own savegames (they are)
So I create and rename some folders like this: "Before Attacking", "After Attacking", "Before big decision" etc.

This avoid getting stuck in a problem without chance to change it. The other thing I do is: I try different things: Sending allies to attack the bugged enemy empire or system and buying that system. If it crashes, reload an older working save game (change Save0.old to Save0 and reload) and analyse what would have changed after your battle in terms of landscape change, then try something different.

As it is now, the game is too buggy. From multiple minor glitches to big game breaker bugs, crashes, corrupted save games and unworkable situations. But if someway you learn and accept to manage the problem manually, you can still enjoy it untill the addiction ceases.

I have noticed the same thing. Actually I have less turrets now due to continuous attacks on my homeworld and when I exit after fight without adding new turrets and collecting relics, I'm able to exit the planet. Once I replace turrets with new and try to exit the planet, boom ... the game crashes.

For now I'm not rebuilding defenses and collecting relics until it crashes for some other reason again.

Also, it looks like its only the disk copies that are affected, the downloadable ones are fine. I may just 'download' my self a copy and then use my key to activate that copy... but isn't there a 3 activation limit?
not true... i got mine from direct2drive.com and i get this lala also.at 1st it was like every 2 hours now it's every 2 planets. ea just plan sucks. guess there is something worse then funcom after all.
