Default Spore coming to Nintendo platforms this October

Create, Fight and Explore Spore-Style for the First Time on the Wii

Guildford, UK – 17th August 2009 – Get ready for heroic battles, vibrant worlds and boundless creativity! Maxis™, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) studio, today announced that Spore™ Hero and Spore™ Hero Arena will be available on the 9th October 2009. Built from the ground up exclusively for the Wii™ and Nintendo DS™ platforms, Spore Hero and Spore Hero Arena introduce a new level of action-packed adventure and combat to the critically acclaimed Spore franchise.

““Spore Hero and Spore Hero Arena give Spore and Nintendo fans a new, dynamic and engaging way to interact with their customised creature heroes,” said Lucy Bradshaw, VP and General Manager at Maxis. “Players’ heroes take center stage as both games, distinctly tailor-made for its Nintendo platform, infuse creativity, combat and adventure to create a unique gameplay experience on the Wii and Nintendo DS.”

Spore Hero delivers the unparalleled creative freedom of Spore in an action-adventure game created exclusively for the Wii. Set in a rich and vibrant 3D world, Spore Hero empowers the player to become the hero as they embark on an epic quest to save their creature’s home planet from destruction. Along this journey, players engage in fun battles, and solve puzzles to collect and unlock more than 250 new creature parts, all with unique abilities. These parts, which can be used to customise creatures in the revolutionary Spore Creature Creator, can change the way creatures will play and combat in the world. Players can also utilise their brawling skills in a dynamic multiplayer mode, where they fight their friends with their own customised creature to become the ‘baddest’ Spore hero around!

Spore Hero Arena catapults players into a galaxy filled with fun and intense arena-based combat. Featuring an all-new story set in the same universe as Spore Hero, Spore Hero Arena takes players on a quest to save planets in their galaxy from an evil force. Throughout the game, players create their own unique gladiator hero creature and guide it from planet to planet as they fight enemy creatures, collect new parts, gain upgrades and unlock special abilities that will benefit their hero. Developed with multiplayer capabilities in mind, Spore Hero Arena also allows players to battle with up to three friends locally or play with a friend over Wi-Fi, taking the Spore gameplay experience to an entirely new and interactive level.

It sounds entirely vanilla!

You've got to understand that PR releases like this have a tendency to contain very well thought through and not entirely accurate language! Let's just look at what it actually says:

The game will contain the standard creature creator without CnC parts, and will function just as before.

No mention of any inclusion of Sporepedia: game will likely contain only Maxis content and, perhaps, a few select others that Maxis likes (so those which have been featured)

You will have to fight, and socialise, and possibly work out which button to stand on or target to shoot. Vanilla platformer stuff it would appear.

No mention of adding creatures to your posse, although that may be included. Expect the "hero" to be oddly tougher than a normal spore creature, so they can throw more grunts at you to keep things exciting.

The arena version and multiplayer are basically combat deathmatches (of the duel or slugfest variety). At the very best, we might expect some improved flight and movement allowing you to strafe in the air while spitting effectively.

However it seems to be a watered down DOA system.

The world looks nicer, but no new stuff in there, just put together in a more detailed (and it would appear completely pre-determined way. No procedural generation here)

why do you always have to make things negative? ok, so it's no improvement on the pc/mac spore, but it'll be a fun and differnt experience.

I've learnt to be somewhat sceptical about what comes out of press releases.

It's a platformer, and if you want a platformer for Wii I'd recommend Mario.

To be honest I'm very sick and tired of EA's constant money loitering, they sacrifice everything, including and most frequently a quality product, for a quick buck, and the only quality and substance is to be found in their hyping press releases.

EA never made Spore up to the original specifications, they even reverted the early build to an inferior version, it would appear so they could release expansions to patch it back up. And now they plan to entirely decaptiate the original idea and make a platformer/brawler out of it! A PLATFORMER!
It could only get further from the original concept if they made a "Spore Sports"!

I like the creativity, it's the only aspect they left intact.
