Well, it seems that everyone on these forums has created at least one campaign. So I’ll join the folks and create one of my own. This one is about overhype and false advertising.
We, the campaign members, are upset of false advertising and overhype made by EA about SPORE and its expansions. Before release of the original product, there was too much of promises and too much of hype. Too much of features were claimed, too much of definitions given. Let’s take, for example, a phrase from one of these trailers: “It will take a lifetime to travel all over the galaxy!” Before game release, we hoped that this means variable, dynamic gameplay that allows for many possibilities. What followed after release was total disappointment. Technically, there are millions of stars, and it REALLY takes long time to visit them all. BUT, there’s no sense doing so, because they are almost the same. If you visited ten of them, you’ve seen them all – in terms of gameplay, at least. The same applies for almost ANY pre-release statement. Many promised features were dropped. Many were locked out or kept for future expansion packs. Many still remain there, but in such form that they are irrelevant or insignificant. Now we are waiting for another release, this time it’s SPORE expansion pack, Galactic Adventures. And the story repeats. There are promises again. There are feature claims again. There are loud phrases again. There’s HYPE yet again. And, as always, there’s too much room for guesswork and no real info on what we will get in that expansion. Dear EA and Maxis. You’ve drawn our attention to SPORE and related products. You’ve got our money. Now, PLEASE, stop this overhype, we don’t want it. We don’t want to lose our hopes, we don’t want to be disappointed yet again. Just give us accurate, relevant info, so we could make justified purchase decision. We know you can do it – at least it worked with most of The Sims expansions (not all, unfortunately). And it will help not only us, your loyal customers. Giving accurate info will benefit developers and publishers as well, because it will be easier for you to concentrate on target audience, rather than spread your resources to satisfy everyone. Also it cuts marketing costs, increasing rentability. So PLEASE, no more hype. ONLY accurate info, and ONLY when you are confident that the info is accurate. Thank You in advance. |

I think a lot of fans are to blame for hype as well. There were rumours abound before Spore was released, most of them had never been mentioned by Maxis or EA. So I say to fans as well: don't start hype either! Stop expecting the next expansion to be absolutely amazing! Maxis are working on a lot of other projects and since Spore took about 5 years to make, we can't expect too much from not even 1 years worth.

No. The fans create the hype, not EA. Of course EA want it to look good, they want to sell the damn thing. It's when people say "lalalala it's going to be the best game ever made ever" that "overhype" happens. People get whipped up into a frenzy, order it as soon as it comes out and are dissapointed when it isn't the best game ever made ever. I didn't believe the hype (that it was going to be the best game ever made ever) and so I wasn't dissappointed with it. Sure it wasn't what I expected, but it's still a good game.
As for GA, I am expecting something good. I am actually probably most excited about beaming down, IDK there is just something so appealing about it. But I'm not going to expect the best expansion ever. It will be what it is. Also, I never pre-order games. So I can read the reviews rather than just the previews. If the reviews say it's **** I won't buy it. Last edited by Person012345; 03-03-2009 at 02:15 PM.. |

Or, they say what is in the game, make it sound as good as possible, and people get whipped up before the final version has even been produced. Just wait until it ****ing comes out for god's sake, then make up your mind. If it's EA's fault, then how come there are plenty of people around who heard the hype, but aren't dissappointed?

EA and Maxis do not create the hype.
As I was not in the 'online community' (so to spealalalalail recently, I had never heard of it until there were a few ads on TV for it. People who trawl around game reviews and upcoming releases create their own hype, as the adverts were not exactly full of it.

The hype was started by Will Wright and his imfamous lectures on Youtube. The one's about Spore started in '05 and there has been at least one every year since. There are other lecture with Brian Eno talking about anthems and stuff. All lot of features, including video evidences for at least 3 extra stages some more at very early beta stages and discussion of others. Not to mension the dissapearance of the game mechanics he discussed, such at parts effecting gameplay and elements effecting planets.
I hope Maxis are still secretly beavering away at the game Mr Wright discussed in various demos ... looking forward in hope |

IGN: Spore: Galactic Adventures Preview This is only a preview not a review and, as I said, I prefer reviews. Also, a rule to live by in everything: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Last edited by Person012345; 03-03-2009 at 09:05 PM.. |

why campaign about us waiting and being dissapointed in spore? all we can do now is accept what we have and give the moderators helpful feedback and ideas that they can send to the EA team - if you're so dissapointed in it, send some ideas and make your gameplay better.

Indeed, I agree with Marcolon and all supporters of Marcolon: You cannot remove hype once it has set in.
