The game looks pants without AA, and there is no in game option to enable.
I have tried forcing AA on through my graphics drivers, but it still doesnt work. There was noo AA available in the Sreature Creator either, I was hoping it would work when the game was released, but it still doesnt. |

The free and well-respected nHancer add-on for the Nvidia graphics cards control-panel gave me strong anti-aliasing in Spore. For me, "Combined + 8xS" was the sweet-spot setting I needed in nHancer, giving me a "Pixar-look" with hardly any noticable jaggy edges. This setting gave me no appreciable drop in frame-rates or jerkyness, and no "fuzzyness" of image. My system:- Nvidia 9600 512Mb card, 2Gb ram, Vista, screen running at 1920 x 1200px widescreen.
Forcing full "supersampling" anti-aliasing was just too much for my Nvidia 9600 512Mb card to give me playable frame-rates - I got about 5 FPS! "Supersampling" renders each frame at twice the size (in my case, 3840px by 2400px) and then shrinks it down to the screen size. As you can imagine, this is very intensive and probably only works if you have some sort of super dual-graphics cards gaming PC. |

Same in ATI GPUs.
Anyway: This game really need patch. One more feature to be added: Option to choose AA. I was VERY amazed not seeing it anywhere in game.

Try forcing Triple buffering aswell if possible, it seems to make mine look slightly better and removed the fuzzyness around the scenery

Yes, the latest nVidia beta drivers have pre-set AA compatibility mode, so you don't need nHancer and can just enable AA in control panel. If you're using older drivers you'll need to set AA compatibility in nHancer to 00000044.
I have it set to 8x and the game looks good. Note that AA doesn't work in creature preview, creator test and paint modes. |

Aha! Thanks Vladan - I didn't realize there were new Nvidia drivers with these features built-in. I'm still working on May 2008's 7.15.11 version here.
My apologies to Iarney: you were right. Last edited by Mutarilla; 06-09-2008 at 07:16 PM. |

I've noticed with the standard Nvidia control panel for latest drivers for my card (8800 GTX) that the forced AA doesn't work (the lines just as jagged as 'none' when set to '16xQ'). The force vertical sync option, however, does work and stops annoying horizontal lines (tearing).

Downloaded the nHancer thing and set the spore app to plain crazy AA but the lines are still as crappy as ever, just like the ineffective nvidia control panel setting. Interesting that the standard nvidia control panel has always worked fine on the creature creator all by itself.

nHancer worked wonders for me, so thanks for the tip.

AA is an algorithm computed and applied by your graphics card that 'softens' the edges of models in computer graphics. Making 3D applications appear smoother.
And never before have I seen it cause so much trouble. At least with an ATI card... |

"Put the rez up"? Are you mad? 'Jaggies' are most apparent when a game is played at the screen's maximum resolution. Some developers don't include a built-in AA setting in their games, as they assume that everyone knows how to use their GPU's software to force it. However, in a lot of cases, this causes issues. |

Such games should have a quick "settings tutorial" sheet in the box, with side-by-side comparisons, and some info-graphics showing pointers to find the Control Panel to tweak settings.
