I have read this thread through out of pure interest for what you guys have to say regarding copy protection and DRM more than the game itself..

I agree with just about every single one of you. Truth is, I dont blame EA for wanting to protect its intellectual property or making sure it doesnt lose money (they're running a business after all). But this is an issue about piracy, thats affecting customer service and soon loyalty. Realising this I beleive there are much much better systems out there, and it being their business, EA should realise this also.

Something like the systems used by Adobe are so much better, they actually let you DE-activate a product within the software itself. So you can make changes to your system, re-install using your cd-key and then RE-activate. This way so you dont take up any more activations or licences than you need or should have. User controlled DE-activation would also benefit those that buy the game buy giving them the option to trade in as it can be re-used so easily... Something which I have seen issues with over and over again in the Battlefield section. Shops keep accepting BF's as trade ins, people buy them because they dont know better. Can't get them to work due to registration/activation. Then end up on here posting questions and getting told to contact EA Support, leading to frustration because the support is, lets be honest, below par and just send them back here. Making them even more hacked off.

I really hope you guys get a good product that works how you expect it to. Providing enjoyment rather than stress. Looks like a good game and if re-installations are smooth and trouble free I may even try it myself... I'll be watching this forum like a hawk in the meantime though to make sure thats the case.

Here's hoping, keep us posted after the release, im sure you will.

p.s. wheres the petition.

Also funny you say that because Mass effect and spore where EA's two latest PC games, I suspect this same protection will be on Dead Space/Mirrors Edge/Need for Speed: Undercover/Sims 3/Whatever Sims 2 expansions come out inbetween/Command and Conquer:Red Alert 3.

I wouldn't be surprised if people download these illegally out of spite.

Pirates don't have many problems with games, but customers do so I think you are right. EA will make people pirate their games, so I hope they don't complain about the situation later, since it's their own fault for treating customers like this.

Yeah I know, I just flagged the game titles and expanded the list a bit, nothing against you more franchises the more aware of the problem people become.

Actually they should print a caution on the game box that you are limited to 3 activations or tell you about this if you buy the game online. I think its a real scam what they are trying to do.

You would of thought so, or allowed you to group 3 EA accounts to 1 cdkey but noooooooooooooo...

We are talking logic here, unless logic = money for EA they don't think it.

Instead you get the stupid loop and fleecing of details as they asked sweet, why they asked for a postal/zip code is beyond me, that should have 0 bearing on anything especially with digital distribution.

It's so they can sell on their mailing list so you can be spammed by other advertisers / for their market research deparetment, so they know where the game is and isn't selling and modify their promotions accordingly.

am i the only one who thinks that this whole "we all loose our discs! so we'll do a nodisc thing and nanny you like mad." is one big joke? I dont loose my discs, and highly prefer having a disc inside the drive over having all this autenticating lalalala ANY day (forgive my language here, but this is just NUTS). The benifits escape me on this whole DRM thing because honestly who wants to contact EA after installing 3 times to get their game running again.
I cant even concieve how to propperly express howmuch this whole fiasco frustrates me... if you want to stop piracy, start acting like you do and start protecting your customers. Or did ea get so big it doesn't care about it's customers anymore? (oh yeah, thats right, it already is like that.)

For everyone not liking this rant, well sorry. I just wanted to express my oppoinion and point of view. (Hope thats still legal *sarcasm*)

Well I went on a search to see if I could find any contact information directly to Maxis and I've been unable to find any. I was thinking it might be worth alerting Maxis to the fact that there is a lot of talk of people boycotting this game due to EA's propsed copy protection system... I dunno about anyone else, but if I was Maxis I wouldn't like a game I've put a LOT of work into flop just because the publishers were busy alienating their fanbase.

Zaerus, you DO NOT get activations back, even if you "uninstall properly" there is NO revocation. More so EA support is a farce, look at what sweet is going through, its been near a week he's no where near a resolution for reactivation of his CC

Default Hello

Hello i have been seeing forward to Spore, but seeing now that it has this lalalalala anti-piracy protection that will force me to either buy a new spore copy or call (and pay for the phone) each 6 months i will probably not buy this game.
I have signed the petition and sent its link to all my friends who also are intrested in the game.

I have written an email that i have send to EA but i will probably get the same respones as everyone else...
The message is sent i have uploaded on to my server at: http://exuvo.no-ip.org/sporecomplain.txt

Its fairly long

I have also been trying to find any way of contacting Maxis or anyone developing the game but to no sucess.

We should probably send emails to pc game news "companies" or web pages as IGN PC: Games, Cheats, News, Reviews, and Previews and alert them to this issue and the link to the petition, and hope that we can make more people aware of this problem with EAs decision with Spore.
I could write to ign and some other places but i would prefer if someone of you guys (or girls) that are a little more involved in the subject write to them.
