Well Sims3 came without securom, so perhaps they've learnt their lesson already.

Or maybe because Sims 3 is such a big long term money spinning franchise, they decided that they couldn't afford even a few percent of people not to buy it out of protest.

Oh and EA if you're reading this, I purchased The Sims 3 Collectors Edition with the cool USB stick because I support games that don't treat me like a potential pirate. I would NOT have bought it had it come with draconian DRM. Take heed for future games please.

EA wouldn't care if a few people don't buy it out of protest. That's nothing compared to the number of people who don't even know what securom is!

The reason that they removed it is that they realised it's dreadful and once gamers have got their hands on the game, even those who didn't know what it was before become piszed off with it.

So the reason they removed it is they realised if they included it everyone who had bought RA3/Spore etc. and had a bad experience with it (i.e. everyone who bought those games) would not buy Sims3 if it has securom. Not out of protest against the concept, but because they don't consider it value for money.

EDIT: oohh, the swearing blocker is both draconian and clever. It even spots using $ in place of s. Doesn't spot sz in place of ss though.

Wow this thread lives on.

EA did care because the sims 3 only used DVD check securom (not horrible limited activation securom) same for dragon age.

Was it/is it a successful protest? Sure looks like it working.

If only they released more games on steam with no securom (in the UK too) and also removed the DRM off their existing titles and they'd be set.
