I would very much like to be able to install and play MY game in the coming years, without having to resort to piracy. I buy games for a reason, and that is to support the developers who work hard on a product.

If EA are going to assume I am a criminal then they will not get my money! I am sick to the back teeth with these companies that ride rough shod over paying customers. I have games that I bought several years ago, Caesar 3, Pharaoh, Civ Call to Power to name a few. I know I have installed/uninstalled these games several times, what makes EA and other companies think that they have the right to limit the amount of times I install any game I have legally bought?

As mentioned earlier, Stardock have a consumer bill of rights which clearly shows that they are not overly concerned by the minority of pirates, but the majorityof consumers. To lend weight to my last statement thier most recent game doesn't have anything more than an old fashioned serial number. Sure the game can be pirated, but they are trusting the 500k people who have legally bought their latest game. below is a copy of their bill.

EA sit up and take note

The Gamer’s Bill of Rights:
  1. Gamers shall have the right to return games that don’t work with their computers for a full refund.
  2. Gamers shall have the right to demand that games be released in a finished state.
  3. Gamers shall have the right to expect meaningful updates after a game’s release.
  4. Gamers shall have the right to demand that download managers and updaters not force themselves to run or be forced to load in order to play a game.
  5. Gamers shall have the right to expect that the minimum requirements for a game will mean that the game will play adequately on that computer.
  6. Gamers shall have the right to expect that games won’t install hidden drivers or other potentially harmful software without their consent.
  7. Gamers shall have the right to re-download the latest versions of the games they own at any time.
  8. Gamers shall have the right to not be treated as potential criminals by developers or publishers.
  9. Gamers shall have the right to demand that a single-player game not force them to be connected to the Internet every time they wish to play.
  10. Gamers shall have the right that games which are installed to the hard drive shall not require a CD/DVD to remain in the drive to play.

It's ridiculous. What if you need to format your hard drive and reinstall? Or you get a new computer.. and reinstall? Or hard drive is corrupt? Or need to reinstall due to problems in the game? 'Nuff said.

I've moved house and installed it on my wifes laptop until I get my computer out. After I put it on my computer I've got one left... what if something doesn't work?

I reinstall my laptop/upgrade on a regular basis. If i have problems due to this 3 install limit the first place im turning to is piracy.

Ive legitimately bought this game and if i am screwed over by EA in the process dont expect any loyalty from me.

I disagree with piracy and do not use pirated goods as I believe in paying for the entertainment i am enjoying. But if you treat me like a pirate I shall act like one should the 3 install cause me problems.

I bought Spore from Amazon, I was eagerly looking forward to playing it tonight, and was really excited when it arrived. I decided to read up on Securom that everyone is talking about. As an Honours Graduate in Information Technology, I am shocked and appalled that a product such as Securom can exist legally. Any product that bypasses firewalling and anti-virus products, covertly installs itself sabotaging existing software configurations, disables hardware, and protects itself from removal is in my opinion, a virus.

I will be returning this game unplayed out of principle. £26 for the original disks is reasonable, but what benefit does owning them have with 3 installation limitation. I'm considering taking my chances on the pirated version if I really want to play it, at least there's less chance of installing something nasty on my pc, and I can play it offline when I go on holiday, and I can re-install it as many times as I like and I still don't need to keep a disk in the drive (which incidentally was why my copy of SIMS2 became scratched and is now unplayable, and will now need to be replaced by a hooky copy if I ever want to play it again).
Nice one EA, If you treat me like a criminal, then I guess i'm obligated to act like one.

Spore didn't work for me, I tried re-installing, but more problems occurred... Now I un-installed it until they get a working fix for this. I only have 1 registration left!!! I don't get how anyone can be satisfied by actually paying 50€ for RENTING?!?

I feel like I have been put in a bad position here.

I dislike Securom, I dislike it because it is very restrictive and I ESPECIALLY dislike EA's approach to offer no manual deactivation.

However... I understand why it is there and it's part in reassuring publishers enough to release a game on PC, even if it is just as useless in piracy prevention as other methods. If it wasn't for Securom giving the "illusion" of protection; Spore could have been a console exclusive launch title. It is better that developers/publishers think they are getting some protection then none at all, in which case why develop for this platform at all?

At least it will hopefully stop the average technophobe from pirating the game.

So I consider Securom a necessary evil EA could have handled allot better, I don't like it but I understand why it needs to be there.

So I'm voting for neither option, I don't think it should be removed but I don't think it is good for the industry either. What will be good for the consumer will be to release a patch that builds deactivation into the game, making it user friendly and within the players control to manage activations. If I am about to upgrade or format the HDD I like to be reassured I can deactivate the copy in advance for reactivation later.

There are other ways to do that without limiting me from reinstalling the game I bought

Signed. Had the three activation limit and the use of SecureROM been mentioned on the packaging, I would never have bought this game. It certainly will make me think twice before buying anything from Electronic Arts or Maxis in the future. To echo many comments above, this is simply punishing paying customers on the apparent assumption that all of EA's customers are dishonest and should be treated as thieves. The DRM gets stripped out by the pirates as soon as it is released and has no effect on them.

No, you wrote that EA does not care not that you don't care.

securom is not just about 3 activations limit, its known to cause conflicts with some anti-virus programmes.

may i also direct you to this thread on EA's main forum.

This needs to be removed, what with viruses and upgrades having the potential to use up activations, I quite to like wipe my hard disk and start again every 18 months or so. Then there is beta software, this has also led me to reisntall my OS and software.

Another one? Not signed.

Not known a person in real life who's suffered a problem and people just tend to lie on the internet and say secuROM causes everything.
My game crashes-SecuROM.
My graphics don't fuction correctly-SecuROM
My disc broke-SecuROM(I've actually heard that before o_o)
