The Sims 2 Life Stories is a laptop friendly version of The Sims 2. It's a lot more simplified and you can't play free mode, while on The Sims 2 you can create your own families and play them.
If you are considering buying one then I would definitely go for The Sims 2.

As well as continuing in free play once you have completed the two pre-set stories, there is a free play neighbourhood, which, when you scroll through the neighbourhood options, lies between the two pre-set stories. It is exactly the same as playing Sims2 base game - although some of the furnishings and many of the floor and wallcoverings are different. The only slight drawback is there will be no expansion or stuff packs and the CC is very, very limited.

The release of Sims Stories has been excellent for some laptop players - except me that is as my laptop is very old ie. more than seven years old which, in computing terms, means it's an antique and ranks with a slide rule!

If you are playing on a laptop with good specs, then Sims2 is probably better as you can enjoy the expansions and stuff packs as well as CC.
If your laptop doesn't quite make the specs needed, the Sims Life Stories may be the way to go. If you are using a desktop PC, then there is no contest, Sims2! As to your shopping question, yes, you can shop.

The Star Hermit has put together an excellent FAQ on the Sims2 forum. You are very welcome to come and join us there insead of your questions getting hidden on the Sims Life Stories Forum.
But in the meantime here is a link to the Sims2 Seasons FAQ which should answer most of your questions. By the way, yes, you do see the seasons change - snow in winter, falling leaves in autumn - even the light is different in the various seasons. To use modern vernacular - it is well cool!
