Use the blending modes a lot, they can create really great effects. My favourites are screen and colour.

Screen can be used for shiny bits. Multiply can be for shading and screen again for lighting. But those tips are mainly needed for drawing.

Which things in particular?

If you want to learn photoshop, you can buy books on the subject, or just play around and try some tutorials (clicky the word tutorials).

Good Tutorials is my first stop for ideas, followed by the Photoshop Guru's Handbook (http://www.photoshopgurus.info if I'm not mistaken).

That's what I do, I think it's called "drawing inspiration from others' work" or something. We need a new word for that like..... difoing......

My new sig and av are all tutorials from Good Tutorials mixed together with a bit of added sparkly bits.

Once you've used a filter go to edit -> Fade (name of filter used) you can get some good effects just by using a load of filters and fading them and altering the blend mode and such.
