no it is during gameplay, the normal desktop mouse comes on and it goes to the desktop as if you accidently pressed start, but then when the game is at the bottom bar it dissapears!

I had that once, The only solution I could find was to Reinstall.
But first, try and delete the Cache files.

Go to The Sims 3, Folder in My Documents /Electronic Arts/ The Sims 3, then delete the package files with Cache at the end of their name E.g CompositorCache.
Then let the movie run instead of skipping it.
If it dosn't work first time, Try again.
Also use The Sims 3 EXE to run the file, C: Program Files/ Electronic Arts/ The Sims 3/ Game / Bin, Its in the "Bin" Directory.

I've found out if you accidently hit the caps lock key it causes it to go to the desktop but you can bring the game back up by clicking on the sims 3 in the lower left screen.
