Well I'm swedish, ergo I play the swedish game. But you need a special trait, the opposite of evil trait. if you got that trait, click the mailbox and there should pop up some charity alternatives.

from the Wiki... Good Good Sims go out of their way to help friends and family in need, are charitable with their money and frequently conduct those around them.

I have a Sim with a trait "Good". She is able to donate to any charity. An option is available on a mailbox practically anytime.
Nevertheless if she donated §1000 option disappeared for several hours. Sim will have a wish practically everyday for donation to some charity. If Sim did, a holy circle appear over its head and mood boost for 1 day.
