Default Terrible Performance

I got this game the other day and the performance of the engine is terrible, just scrolling around the map is a jerking stuttering mess. At this stage it is totally unplayable.
This is my first sims game so I don't know if this is common in the series.
Unfortunately I bought this game from ea download store so I can't return it. Is there a patch planned to address the problem?
None of the reviews around the internet seem to mention it, this is the only one I could find

Despite featuring lack luster graphics, The Sims 3 did not run nearly as nicely as we had expected it would when using the GeForce GTX 285 for example. Right away we were surprised at how jerky the game was when scrolling around. The jerky performance was a bit of a mystery, as the GeForce GTX 285 produced a minimum frame rate of 64fps at 2560x1600.
I have a decent computer, I can run crysis maxed out flawlessly and the sims 3 running at 130fps should be smooth as butter but it's jerking all over the shop.

My specs :
Quad core q6600 @ 3ghz
4870x2
4gb ram
xp64

I've tried lowering all the setting to the very minimum and lowering the resolution, I get 300fps and it's still stuttering just the same. I tried disabling catylyst ai as there is no crossfire profile yet and tried forcing v-sync on to no avail.
Is anyone else having performance issues?

I've tried the game on another rig with the same results.

Dual core 6600 @ 2.4ghz
8800gt
4gb ram
xp64

My games the same. It looks more like Sims 1 than Sims 3.
If I could get it to Sims 2 standard, at least, I would be happy.

Edit: It also impossible to zoom without it turning a mess and jerking around.

Yea it's been mentioned in nearly all of the reviews of the game that I have read, it's just a problem with the game.

why on earth with that amazing hardware aren't you using Vista SP2 64 bit? Plus with hardware less powerful than yours i have an amazing game experience, flawless with all details to maximum.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
4 gb
Ati HD 3850
Windows 7 [build 7201]

xp is old,but xp x64 is even more terrible.

My computer is similar if not a little less nice and I can't say that I have had this problem. Of course, I don't really have any sims in the neighborhood anymore so that may change. I have all of my settings on low too, because on high it was so slow. I do notice the jerking / lag on CAS when changing hairstyles and such which makes me wonder why they thought the minimum requirements for the game could do anything but load it!

As far as I know, almost none of the sims series has enjoyed ATI cards from the outset, they have had to release patch after patch to make it work properly, so I wouldn't expect it to improve too quickly.

xp64 is a brilliant operating system, never had a problem with it, very stable. Been using it for years. I was an early adopter of vista, that was maybe a mistake I'm sure they've ironed out all the problems now but when I used it, it was a resource hungry buggy nightmare. I did stick with it for about a month but it was like running a clapped out car, eventually you just have to scrap it. Didn't like it at all. It would be nice to have directx 10 but I can live without it
Maybe if windows 7 is any better I'll move to that eventually.

ati 4870x2 on one rig, nvidia 8800gt on the other.

How good are EA with patching the sims? Do they have a good track record?

WHY? XP is much more faster, and to me more reliable then Vista (i has vista on my laptop) it takes forever to boot up, to load programs and it hated THe sims 2 on my pc when it was vista - igot my old xp disk from my dell and now its fine for it

Do a Vista SP2 clean install, way better than XP. I understand though that Windows 7 is A LOT better than vista and xp altogether lol all another world in performance terms. It's ok to wait for Windows 7 eventually (RTM is just around the corner in July, with the product out in shops on October 22nd)

Nevermind,Windows 7 is Vista's done right,so you'll get to it once it's out won't be regretting that since everyone as you can see on the net is very positive with the upcoming best operating system from Microsoft

Anyway try to update graphic drivers and directx if necessary

Yeah, I update my 4870x2 drivers every month the day they come out and directx is up to date. I'm getting the same results with my nvidia and ati card so I'm assuming it's not gpu related.
It's not operating system related either as the test system in that review is running vista.
Oh well, not to worry, just wait for the patch I suppose. I'm in no desperate hurry to play it.

Clippa, there is something else going on here.. Your system should be maxing out Sims 3 even without the crossfire. Couple of quick points, your using a quad core processor, I am willing to bet Sims 3 is only seeing 2 possibly 3 of those cores. But that shouldnt matter. Im thinking the problem may be with 64bit compatibilty issues in the software rather than actual hardware issues, especially if you are updating drivers.

It's probably just a graphic problem with the actual game. It's pretty worrying hearing all the problems with the game.

ah yes, more complaints to EA about performance as i expected....mine performed like cow manure even though i had state of the art computer components. thanks EA for incorporating crysis performance into a pc game that looks like LEGO. >:

There are some suggestions for various issues being posted at EA Support here so it could also be worth checking for advice in this area.
