Calm down dear.

It annoys me that there's this mentality the game is for kids, but EA know who their target demographic is and won't be swayed by our comments in that regard.

Young people do play the sims. I started playing the sims 1 when I was 10 - I looked on the box and it had a suggested rating of 11+. My parents deemed that I was mature enough to handle it. If the game had been rated 13+ then I would probably hve had to wait a while...

The sims 2 base game (or my gase game at least) is rated 7+ - my expansions are rated 12+.

As far as I know, someone who is 12 is considered a kid, and someone who is 7 can't be much else other than a kid.

The sims 2 has a wide audience. There is a huge difference in a 12 year old's knowledge of the world, and a 15 year old's knowledge of the world. The sims is not created for adults, teens and young teens/children.

I will admit though, that the excuse of 'what about the children' is grating on me too.

But that's not why I don't want teen prgnancy, abortion, etc in my game.

I don't want them because although the sims 2 is a life stimulator, it's a lighthearted and sugar coated one. Even the bad things such as death are presented in a humourous matter. The sims has always presented a very innocent, pure kind of simulation game, and I think it should stay that way.

Correct, it's designed for teens, 12+

What point are you trying to make exactly?

There seems to be a misunderstanding as to what demographic a game is designed for and what demographic it's suitable for. Take a game like guitar hero, it may be suitable for any ages, but it's aimed at teenagers. Or my example of Sim City 4, it has no content that is unsuitable for young ages. But I know of very few children who want to be the civic designer of a giant metropolis.

So to end, target audience /= age rating

We think that young people play the game because they do play it. A lot of my friends have little brothers and sisters who play it, one even going to the extent of waiting until his sister had left the house and playing it to avoid getting caught (I was taking old Barbie dolls around for one of them and caught him).

When I was ten I started playing the original The Sims games, and at the time I was the eldest of my group of friends and we all played it. My parents were hesitant to let me buy the Hot Date expansion pack but eventually gave in after seeing that an image used to advertise the game didn't actually reflect the content.

People will always ignore the recommended age, and those who have been playing The Sims games for years will buy TS3 whatever the rating for it is because they've played the previous games (for example, a lot of children bought the Play Station versions of the games before moving onto PC) and know that nothing adult or sensitive would be included in them.

It's not a matter of thinking young people play them, it's actually knowing from being a child who played the game or knowing a child who does play it. I know plenty, and they're all eagerly waiting the release of The Sims 3.

Saying that you know people that buck the trend, doesn't prove that the trend is false.

I know girls who play Half Life 2 and love first person shooters, but if I was to say that the game is aimed at girls or that Valve shouldn't include certain aspects in case girls play it I'd be pretty delusional.

I'm one of those "kids" (I'm not under the age limit, don't worry!), my parents care about me and they know what's in The Sims 2.

As Dan-WalsallFC said, you are acting like one of the kids with the "I'm gonna eat everyone I am the monster" quote.

Well, I've been playing The Sims on all different consoles since I was very young. And I'm only thirteen now. Now I think about it, I played The Sims to create a life that I didn't have.

Once again your right. (As usual... ) I was playing the original sims as soon as superstar was out, and that was a long time ago. I must of been quite young playing that game. My cousin, who is now 6 plays the sims with all the expansion packs. But my Uncle knows what's included in the game, he also knows I used to play at a young age and nothing bad happened to me.

My point once again is this, just because you're a child and play it, doesn't mean that the statement "The game is aimed at Teenagers and Young Adults" is invalid. Then again, it makes the original thread question invalid, because the obvious reason why people think young people play sims is that young people play sims.

Once i played Sims2, and my sister aged 8 that time saw the Sims,
and she was instantly very attracted.

She always insisted to play it, but honestly i was worried that somehow if she would find out the sexual elements in it, like kissing between sims who are not family members, and attractions of same sex..I know she will be puzzled and confused over that..And i am uncertain of how i was to explain what's it's all about..I don't want to, it could make me feel very awkward.

I may be protective, but i think it was a wise act for me to do.
maybe it is different with different kids, but i know her, and i don't think i want her to discover those yet.

In australia the base sims2 game is rated M which is 15+ without adult consent. but younger people do play it but conpared to other things sims2 is mild, i learnt much more adult things in grade 3.

I do get sick of the whining about kids as well. If a game is rated mature people shouldnt complain either about it not being suitable for teens.

So if its rated 12+ no one should complain about it not being suitable for children.

As for me personly, my parents never really worried about what I played. The only game my mother ever disliked was Black & White because you play a god in that and my mother is rather religious.

I played games all my life though, first Pac-Man and other Atari games, and when I was five we got a Nintendo, and right away I played my first shooter.

Thats right, I played shooters at the age of five.

It was Duck Hunt.

First I just played the mario games, teenage mutant ninja turtles, and on the super nintendo donkey kong games, mario games and some similar games, and at the time I got a playstation I was in my early teens and moved on to more violent games such as Medievil, Legend, and also Grand Theft Auto, rated 18+ while I was 14 years old at most at the time.
