Default Would you like to see religions (Christianity, Buddhism etc.) in TS3?

I'd love for different Sims to have different religions (or, with some, none at all) in The Sims 3, But I've read that it would make the game too controversial. So I want to know: What do you think of this idea?
Personally, as I said, I would really like it; you could have a mostly Christian neighbourhood with a few Buddhists and some Sikhs and Hindus, as well as those who believe in mythology from different countries, eg Egypt. And a few with no religion at all.
And Sims should be able to change their religion/s; for example, a Sim starts off with no religion, then believes in Greek Mythology as a teenager, then soon afterwards becomes a Tibetian Buddhist and stays that way until she dies. Or an adult Hindu who's just moved in as is from another neighbourhood (or even another country!) becomes a Catholic.
You'll notice that I mentioned different types of different religions. For example, for Buddhism, there is Tibetian, Chinese and Zen Buddhism. There are Catholics, Protestants and Greek Orthodox Christians.
These all are just ideas, and I wonder what you think of them...

Well, I'm really NOT religious at all! I hope not to offend anyone here, but religion really annoys me. Sorry :P

I think it would make TS3 very controversial. Especially with little kids playing on it too.
Meh, we'll see what happens :P

My opinion on religions in the sims:

I think it's asking too much to include religions- it detracts from the gaming experience. If you want to build your own churches/temples that's fine, but where do you draw the line if you include religions? 'Christianity', 'muslim', 'jewish', they're all too vague with all their subgenres; this is excluding scientology, norse, jedi, Flying Spaghetti Monster (touched by his noodly appendage- heh)... The list goes on. You'll never please everyone and when it comes to religion, it's probably best to avoid it altogether. And would athiesm/agnostic be an option too? Personally i'd hate for my sims to have religion.

I never had a problem with santa claus in sims 2 because he's not christian, he's consumerism (ha!); and the odd religious item would be ok, like the jewish candelabra or zen garden, you're not really offending anyone there.

A sim-specific religion could be a comprimise, but you'd have to base their festivals on existing ones for people to relate to them, and then do you just go for christianity as people know easter and christmas more than, let's say, eid? That's going to annoy people of other faiths.

Also, would there be benefits to being religious in-game; like if you pray then occasionally money/friends/relationships rain from the sky? Otherwise there'd be no point to putting it in the game (no comment on real religion here, just it would be an empty interaction for the sim). 'Obtaining inner peace' could be an option, maybe sims increase their abilities for a few hours after praying.. But if you do get rewards for praying, then which religion would get them? All? That's going to cause some conflict with the more devoutly religious sims fans.

Although, having JWs going door to door could be quite funny.. You could get a chance card everytime they knock; either you get rid of them as a result or they invite themselves in and stay for the rest of the day lol. Same with door-to-door double glazing and driveway pavers.

No. No. No. No. Please, no.

Just the thought of religion would completely put me off buying the game. Something specifically created for Sims? Maybe. But including actual religions is a very bad move. I can't stand just sitting through an hour long service or video about anything religious without wanting to throw pins into the back of someone’s head; I'd completely avoid the game if it contained religions. I would love it if it was a sim religion, with it's own events. Maybe their god could be a lama. The important thing is, that the need for a religion was raised because people wanted to have community lots to have weddings and funerals etc. in. So as long as we keep the religeous references infrequent, and grant players the ability to have ceromonies on community lots (parties aswell preferably), then everyone will be happy.

Hell no. Adding religion to the game would be a terrible idea.

Most of the problems in the world today are caused by one of two things - religion and politics. And I don't want to see either in the game.

No matter how many religions they put in the game, they'd end up offending tons of people.

Bad idea. Plain and simple.

I have to agree on that, and that ^ post as well. I'm an atheist and having religion forced upon me in a game too, would not only annoy me, but seriously provoke me.

So parents can't be proper, strict parents without being religious?

You don't have to believe in a god to know right from wrong and teach your children those values. And don't even get me started on the ones who use religion as an excuse to beat their children...

*deep breath*

Having religion in the Sims is a bad idea!

A sim religion could have a potential to scupper game sales because not all religions may agree on the principles set out.

I agree that The Sims is no place for religion -- besides which, WE'RE their god! As much as I'm sure they worship us due to our pant-peeing and pool-drowning ways, I think it'd be a little peculiar to see them praying to us. xD

I think you could tone down the offensiveness by choosing the name of the deity the Sim worships. You could have a generic sort of table with a cloth on it as an altar, click on it, and have a "Sim-name Gets Religion" option. Then you would fill in the name of the religion, and the name of the deity.

So the Sim could be Christian and worship Jesus, or Christian and worship Mary, or Hindu and worship Shiva, or Pastafarian and worship Penne.

Or Nicolean and worship Nicole!

Religion is a BAD idea. No offence intended. The idea of religion in a game such as the Sims will just cause bad press for EA and The Sims brand. Besides... religion causes enough problems in real life let alone the Sims 3. I like the vague unrealistic side of the game anyway. Things like having to choose a religion for my Sims to belong to or them having to go to hospital if they get even remotely ill.

Realism in simulation games is only good to an extent.

Yeah I agree.

Though it would be fun if say a group of sims could start a 'cult' or 'religion' or something. Like make it up entirely so that no one is offended.

Like the pastafarian idea

If they are putting witches into the game - then they are already introducing a religion.
