I suspect Wicca is what was meant by saying that by introducing witches that was like introducing religion. Wicca is a form of religion, which worships nature, and it is basically a form of pagan witchcraft.

Aaah I was thinking a kind of witch crafty thing.
At least it isn't one in the public eye a lot if you get what I mean.

No, far too controversial, would exclude far too many players and far too complicated given how many thousands of religions there are especially when you consider denominations.
The only way religion could be viable in the sims is if you were given the choice to make your own religion with yourself as being the sim god so you were worshipped or the option for sims start their own sects and cults. Even so, I still wouldn't want it and it would still be far too controversial. |

They are NOT putting witches in the game. EA used a prototype for determining the mechanics of socialisation in which they used calling someone a witch and trying to get the neighbours to side with them and burn them at the stake. What you need to realise is that a prototype is not necessarily what they end up using in the game.

@SpokiDokiLoki :
The traditional (fairy/fantasy tale) witch/wizard is not wicca, so there's no religion involved here. They're just people who know magic. Is Harry Potter wicca?

Wicca as a religion is different to the meaning of witch / warlock etc in the traditional sense. I can't see that having a witch should be taken as the game having religion - nobody looks at the ghosts and sees them as a sign of spiritualism, which is another 'religion'.
And I don't think that the game should have religions. I am an athiest but it wouldn't put me off the game as I think people are entitled to whatever silly beliefs they want to hold. I do however think that it would have the potential for causing offence to others and put the game in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. We can already build churches (temples or whatever) and cemetaries on community lots if we wish to do so, so there is no need for any religion to be introduced. As for marrying etc on community lots, there's no reason why we couldn't have an 'invite to wedding...' option and specify where and the guests, then go there and click on the arch. It would work similar to group outings so anyone could happily marry their Sims off in the park, mall or wherever they wish

No, I agree. As an Atheist it wouldn't offend me, but whatever religion they introduced it would manage to offend some people, for example if the Sim religion was Christianity based then people of other faiths may get upset. Too political - we don't need controversy in the Sims.

At the end of the day having religion in the game would not only offend some people, but if they did incorporate some religions where would it end? They couldn't just put a handful of different religions in the game without other people being upset or offended because their religion is not included. Lets face it people there are alot of different religions out there.
I think that if you want to create objects of religious simbolisim for your own game then go right ahead. But incorportating it into the base game that everyone will use; I don't think it's such a good idea.

I wouldn't get it if it had religions, makes it too complicated.
Some people might say it is racist... or possible to make racist pictures or comments on them. Also, much rather be WooHoo'ing then praying or worshiping people virtualy. Finally, there is always small religions and you'd have to put them in it aswell, to not upset anyone. Last edited by trykz; 12-04-2008 at 07:17 PM. Reason: Missed something out :D |

Im not particularly religeous but i thought about it and it sounds like a good idea you could now use a church for something other than weddings like baptism and more stuff for old people like church choirs and sundays

I like that idea Chaz! lol
And seeing as most religions use a church, I suppose their could be a few 'sim' religions, so it wouldnt offend real religions. And when you have kids - with one parent being religious, and the other isnt, you could have the option whether or not the baby would be religious. And maybe an extra school, for your kids to go to - like a religious school etc, bit like private school. And have a few objects etc. And in the new town, have a church etc! |

Most religions don't have churches though - that is the problem. Churches are a very Christian thing - Muslims have Mosques, Jews have Synagogues, Buddhists have Temples etc etc. All religions have a place of worship, but a church as we think of it is a very Christian thing.
