If it doesn't mess with my computer, I may consider still purchasing the sims 3...
Did it ship with the sims Freetime? I know it did with BV, but I skipped that one and only bought Freetime. If Freetime did have SecuROM, then I believe that I had no problems with it, I can still burn CD's and everything - However, I never downloaded any patches, and have never had any bugs... Though than may have been me being stupid and not realising that what was happened was a bug XD

Although, my laptop did completely die on me a while after I installed freetime - it wouldn't start up or anything. I had to send it back to HP headquarters Apparantly my whole motherboard or something was fried :S So I don't know if that had anything to so with SecuROM or just the fact that I left it on standby a lot...

So I'm unsure about this... if it was SecuROM, then I was lucky that my PC was still under waranty... by time the sims 3 comes out, it wont. So if it messes it up again - I will be in need of a new computer >.< and by that time I will be a broke uni student! lol I hope that EA don't, just so we're not at risk - and for computer illeterate(sp??) people like me - that we don't have to worry ourselves about making a decision to etiher play a game we love or completely skrew up our computers!!

Regardless of the SecuROM, Piracy will get around it anyway, they will find some way to hack the program. And if you're lucky enough to live somewhere like Hong Kong - like my dad, it may be possible to get the software uninstalled anyway.. I know we used to get our PlayStations Chipped so we could play DVD's and games from different regions... as well as the odd pirate though in our defence, that was because all the games were in japanese!! -.-

Thats scary because thats exactly what happened to my laptop after I installed BV. I mean it could just be some malfunction, but I was playing the sims the moment it fried. My laptop was not under waranty so I got nada. We're claiming on the house insurance and they are still trying to figure out what happened (BV was only just out a few months at the time) freetime, sims 3 and the insurance still don't know what happened to the laptop.

That really is strange! that sucks that your having to claim on home insurance! I hope it all goes well for you!

although I'm pretty sure that the problem was with me leaving my laptop on standby all the time, as I haven't had any problems since! and this was in march, I think!

After reading (most of) the evidence, I agree partly with everyone here. On one hand, I believe the whole 10-day thing and potential computer damage is ridiculous. But on the other hand, look at this forum. Despite the SecuRom controversy, people are still talking about what stuff they want in the game and how cool it would be if tihs or that happened. People are still looking forward to it. So it may well be that people will buy it regardless of security, simply because they want a great looking/sounding game.

Personally I'm not convinced about things as yet. I can understand the need for them to protect the game from piracy, but I really do resent being told that I can only install it 3 times. It does feel like you're renting the game.

I'm sure that someone will sort something out, but am now seriously considering not buying it! For me that is shocking as I've bought the lot as they've been released from day 1.

I really need to find out more before I make my final decision.

Having only recently found out about securom it does make me a little curious about the fact that not too long ago I had to replace my hard drive. I never saw any messages, but it does make me wonder. Perhaps the thought hasn't crossed the ea's minds that everytime someone's PC breaks that has securom on it....ea will be blamed. If my pc does go odd again from this point forward I will consider it to be securom, will blame ea and won't buy any more games from them.

They need to seriously reconsider this!

I know a couple of people who's PCs regularly go wrong for a variety of reasons. I will certain advise them to stay clear of sims 3.

i've never had any trouble with secuROM-although i never even knew that it existed till yesterday so i think that i will still be buying Free time and Apartment Life but i'm not so sure about TS3

I not much of a techie, so correct me if i'm wrong, but with TS3 secuROM i will have to validate my account (?) every 10 days-what if i go on holiday?* otherwise the game uninstalls itself(?) and secuROM makes it so that you can only have 3 installs and disables cd burning equipment-for anything and everything(?)

if i'm right here(which i severly doubt) EA have made a colossal **** up and are cheap scammers.

*i also go through sims phases where i sometimes don't go on cause i don't have the time/can't be bothered for loads of months. EA must seriosly want us to continue playing their games...reminicient of i-pods, you buy one, and get tied into Apple.

Why? This is pretty straight to the point and simply. Just search it in google then.

I can't personally comment on wether or not I think securom is good/bad simply because I don't have it on my computer. But from what I've read about other peoples' experiences it doesn't sound safe for my computer.

I understand that they need to try to protect their game from pirates; but I have to ask myself at what cost? If it is true that piraters have found a way around securom then what is the point in using it if it doesn't work? It seems that it is the honest consumers who are made to suffer! So how is that fair? Also this ten day validation situation (if it is actually true) is just crazy!

pirates will work around any protection scheme, even ones like securom that ea insists on using. so far there hasnt really been a way to stop pirates or even reduce them much. but i thought since its 2008 and computers have been going since the world wars that someone, somewhere would have come up with a way to prevent pirates AND not screw and upset paying customers which turns them to pirating....

but...this has yet to happen, piraters will always work around it and thats no call to do this securom business to us paying people

SecuRom is DRM anti-piracy software that comes installed with the game to prevent piracy.

People have problems with it because:

A: they were not told that SecuRom was in the game
B: It installs itself with no option to unistall
C: It is hidden after installation, again makes it very difficult to remove
D: It (apparently) is constantly running in the background even when you are not playing the game

The issues with Sims 3 is that
A: they may limit installations (i.e you can only install your game a certain amount of times
B: they will check the game through your internet connection to make sure it is still valid and no one has stolen your registration key and used it. Or something like that.
If it doesn't check out your game will not work. Even if you have paid for it.

Some people have said that when they have 2 DVD drives Securom games will not work.

Thats about all I really know about it.

Damn I just realised something, I voted wrong on the poll. I thought the poll was 'are you concerned about securom' I voted YES! LOL I didn't realise the poll question was different. Scrub my vote it shouldn't count, I vote NO! lolol

I'll add a note to the first post linking to your post.

So the yes votes are minus 1, and the no votes are plus 1.
