Im going to have my two pennth and it is one heck of a two pennth. Firstly to all the non-believers, there was a fantastic piece of software called Safedisk (Macrovision owned) which shipped with the Sims 2 series right upto H&M Stuff which was extremely reliable and stable, then they (EA) started using the crettin named secuROM without telling us, probably to save money, knowing EA.
Ever since secuROM has been launched and updated with all games sold by EA, thousands of players have been in uproar over this piece of lalalala. To some computers it can cause minor errors like lockups and slow downs, but in worse cases can cause massive damage to systems such as automatic firewall and anti-virus deactivation, disk drive meltdown/failure, internet connection problems, even complete failure to systems and corruption/deletion to files and folders. No software should do this, I repeat shouldn't do this, only Malware, Trojans, Worms and Viruses do this. Sony had no right to create this monster of a programme. I mean Sony, the Japanese telly manufacturer are not good at producing software and should stick to making electronics. Money-grabbing, greedy and selfish EA had no right using secuROM, nothing was wrong with Safedisk, like we say, If it ain't broke, why fix it?! EA and Sony should own up to this, and destroy secuROM as it is as usefull as a chocolate teapot and totally shouldnt exist. And again to all the none believers that think secuROM is 'angelic' and 'perfect', just type 'securom' into Google, or any search engine in fact and read the little horrors that appear, then you'll realise that this software was developed by the devil and isnt good as you'd thought it was. I agree, they will lose a lot of business if they include an install of SecuROM with their games. The only games that I tend to buy are The Sims games and Harry Potter, both by EA. I've never had any real issues with their games, and I've only had to reinstall The Sims 2 once or twice due to errors (lucky me, and cross fingers). I've been reading up on SecuROM issues (Simmers Against Securom) with computers and it sounds to me like buying the games would be more trouble than it's worth. I was looking forward to buying Apartment Life because it comes out the day after my birthday, so I would have treated myself to it, and played it all weekend but it doesn't look like I'll be doing that now, unless they decide not to include SecuROM.
I think that if anyone has issues with these games, like the ones that are highlighted in the articles that I have read, they're not going to want to buy any of the expansions, because of all of the problems they cause and EA will lose a LOT of money on a game that without the SecuROM program, is sure to be an absolute success. Why did they have to change their security software over to SecuROM from the much better, less interfering Safedisk? Having SecuROM censure what we can and cannot use with our computers is a violation of our rights. Why won't they let us use our CD/DVD Burners to store precious family moments and back up our files in case we lose them? Why do they really need to disable firewalls, and anti-virus programs leaving us open to attacks if their precious program can't work with them? Most of Simmers use their software legally, and shouldn't be treated like common criminals because they like play the games that they pay for and may have to reinstall it because it's buggy. |

They ditched SecuROM for NWN2, it was in at release but removed through a patch I believe.
NWN1 was and still is a very popular game, while theres plenty of things wrong with nwn2, securom might also have played a part in the faillure of this game. |

If I buy the Sims 3 that's bundled with SecuROM then one advice is to also buy a cheap budget PC to test it on.

I've just been reading this, and it doesn't look good. Given that I've had to reinstall Sims 2 three or four times this year already, this could turn out to be a rather short-lived game for me.
I, like everyone else, was so looking forward to this game, but if it contains anti-piracy methods as draconion as this then they can forget it. |

The best advice I can give, is click the links in the first post, and read those. Also, google securom and look for information from there. That way, you can make up your own mind, without the bias of others.

Very true what t2suggas said, but generally speaking it's a added program that is installed along with your simgame which will make it harder to make illegal copies. So the intention is to stop piracy or at least make it harder. The problem is that to make this added securety some players find it inteferes with their computer or way of playing (for instance playing without internet on the computer etc), while other players will never even notice it's there.
I for one have a game with the securerom on it, and I have never noticed until I looked here and then at the box for the game, so for me it has not intefered with my playing, but I still am against doing it because of many of the same arguments presented in this thread and because I simply don't like the idea of installing secondary software on my computer that I cannot install or uninstall because of another program. This is a very simplified explaination of course and I too would still recomend doing some research yourself and know that you're likely to run into very biased explainations if you look on forums (and maybe other places too). |

I was VERY Naive about SecuRom, but i've decided if SecuRom is included in TS3, i will definitely not be buying. I'd rather play TS2 Than be harrased every
10 days. thanks, but no thanks.

Ok, so i probably shouldnt have, but ive just sent a complaint to Watchdog, for those international members who dont know what it is its a consumer complaints tv programme, where they will try to solve problems of anything and everything. It might not even turn out into anything, but still ive sent a compaint, they might look into, so we might be winning this battle against EA and secuROM.

SECUROM has already destroyed my whole operating system, so that I lost all my data and messed with the files to run my PC, the PC would not start, and I kept on getting SECUROM error messages.
Since then I have installed a new OS, and am playing Sims 2, but have DESTROYED THE SECUROM on my PC. If we cant do this when Sims 3 comes out, I think we should boycott them and not buy the game. It's BEHAVES live MALICIOUS MALWARE or VIRUS!!! Let's hope that EA is taking note!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!! BTW, on a lighter note, I am suing Song for the damage to my PC. Since its their product. I have had to replace alot of stuff which cost me £100's... |

iv always not liked the idea of it..but since i found bon voyage had it on...yeah it might have something to do with my pc not been running smoothly, but it was only minor problems like computer not wanting to start, so far no data loss...i dont know how to get rid of it...but i dont know if i should say this but i have a friend who can get around this type of stuff..hes really into computers. hopefully he can help me fix it.
in a very, very odd case piraters may seem like the freedom fighters when its them that kinda caused it...irony i know but hey it happens. theres good sides and bad sides to everything

Thats it. Last straw. I have just been here : Simprograms » EA to PC Gamers: “Install 3 times? Buy another copy” and here Is DRM killing PC games? (Part 1) « Talkjack’s Weblog
and here Digital Rights and Wrongs: The DRM Wars | GotGame and here (swearing and very angry person) YouTube - How anti-piracy screws over people who buy PC games and I am no longer going to be buying sims 3. No matter how much I love it, i'm not going to. I think I will spend my money on a console and games there (not the sims series). its a lot simpler. |
