What's your point? It's unnecessary because other games don't have it? Then perhaps the immobilizer on a mercedes benz in unnecessary because Fiat Seicentos don't have them.

that would be stupid, plus it would scare modders off because people would be afraid of their game being deleted if they installed a new car or something

Er - except the car immobiliser is there to stop your car getting nicked by someone else, whereas SecuROM doesn't do a thing to stop someone nicking your game from you. The immobiliser protects the customer; SecuROM protects the manufacturer. The immobiliser doesn't wreck anything else, either.

A more accurate analogy would be likening SecuROM to putting car immobilisers on ALL the Mercedes cars to prevent them getting nicked from the factory, and to drive your own car you have to phone up the factory and prove that you bought it legitimately every 10 days. Also, there is a risk that the immobilisor will stop all the other electrical items in your house from working.

its insane... i know piracy is a concern... but look how the sims 2 sold... their true fan base buys the game... every sim player i know has bought the game... i don't know anyone that pirated it (though, of course, it happens)... i know they're all about money, but they'll probably just end up losing more money on the sims franchize in the long run...

Even if it has secuROM it's not going to stop me from buying it, besides my 2009 someone will come up with a really clever way to remove secuROM.

sorry for not quoting. I agree. Anyway, with all this commotion it won't be installed.

with the other games not using SecuROM, my point is not that because of that the sims3 shouldnt use it, but that because of this, I might be more tempted to spend my money on a good game that does not use SecuROM.

There are plenty of upcoming games that I am definatly going to get, most are released earlier though since most dont make such early announcements.

Fable 2, Soul Calibur IV, Saint's Row 2, Mercenaries 2, The Force Unleashed, Empire: Total War, all quality games I plan on getting this year.

For next year I hope to see Dragon Age, which I would pick over the sims3 anyday, nothing beats a Bioware game in my book. Unless EA meddles with it.

Not advocating piracy or anything, but they don't seem to have a problem getting around secuROM, so ultimately it's just the consumers that suffer.

In the Sims Resource a few days back, I explained to forumers in this post that I considered asking Just Flight to acquire the Sims franchise if I believe that SecuROM is continuing to outrage customers.

I do not advocate piracy whatsoever, but I know that the feelings of fans must be considered seriously. SecuROM is like not allowing fans to play with custom content.

If you're so concerned, petition Just Flight or Monte Cristo to buy off the Sims franchise of EA. Not that I hate EA, but the trust between publishers and fans is essential.

I don't think i'd bother buying the sims 3 if it comes with securom protection. Its just not worth buying a game worth around £30-£40, just for the protection software used on it to corrupt your computer worth £600-£1200.

I hope they don't use it because the sims 3 looks sooo cooool!

Are there actual cases of it completely destroying a 1000 pound computer? That is, every component of said computer being broken and irreperable.

no, but what i meant was that theres no point buying a game worth £40 if the software protection on it is going to muck up a computer worth £1000.

Because there is every chance that SecuRom will cause something like a BSOD or a Hard Drive failure. Its happened to me before with Bon Voyage. I started getting BSOD's and 2 weeks later my hard drive packed in and I had to go to a repair shop and order a new hard drive which wasn't cheap and isn't worth spending over a game. No matter how fun the sims is.

So I gave Bon voyage to a friend and now i don't buy any TS2 expansion packs that have SecuRom on them.

So it didn't cost you a 1000 pounds to fix and could in fact have been pure coincidence.

no, it cost £150 to fix but if it does it once then theres nothing stopping it from doing it again and each time i replaced it the costs would all total up.

also with alot of others complaining about the same happening to their computers when BV came out i seriously doubt its just coincidence.

Just for the record, what exactly are the consequences of secuROM if it does go wrong?

To my knowledge, it was only affecting CD burning software (and the launch of the game in the latest freetime patch)

It could easily have been another factor with BV and later expansion packs that causes these problems - indeed I thought it was an Nvidia graphics card issue that was causing BSODing when playing the sims.

As my critical thinking teacher would say, it's a flaw of causation. B happened shortly after A, thus A must have caused B.... You haven't taken into account C, or D, or the fact that the events could be completely unrelated.

The only issue I have with securom is if the 10-day activation thing is used - I'm not sure whether I will even have internet when I go to university next year, or indeed how many computers I will go through. When the sims 2 was first released I couldn't get it, due to rubbish specs, but doubtless I would have purchased it if my comptuer had been up to it. I then got another computer second hand from dad's work, which I could run sims 2 on, and last year I got this computer..... In a period of 4-5 years I've had three computers - thus 'using up' the activations, according to the speculations.

However, we have a year until this game comes out - all we really have are assumptions and speculations. By all means let the developers know we're not happy with the idea of the ten day thing, but don't start running around like headless chickens yet.

Yes, but I'd probably use software to circumvent it.

I'll probably just download over EA Link or something similar, I've had no trouble with this 6 month thing with it and I avoid securom.

I really hope they don't go through with this. Maybe if we all send protest letters, and get many people to, they will stop.
