Default The Sims 2 Cheats!

The Sims 2 & Expansions - Cheats

Here is a list of the most useful cheats available in The Sims 2, and those added with each expansion; if I've missed any out, please add them below and I'll edit.

To enter cheats in The Sims 2, first open the command console by simultaneously pressing Ctrl + Shift + C. This will bring up a small rectangular white box, in the top left corner of your game screen. All cheats are entered into this box. To re-enter the last cheat used in this session of gaming, bring up the cheat console by pressing the keys listed above, then just press the Up Arrow on your keyboard. The last cheat used is re-entered. You can close the cheat box at any time by pressing the escape key.

Note that some people find cheats are case-sensitive.

Quickie Corner

Money Cheats

kaching - adds 1000 to household funds
motherlode - adds 50000 to household funds

Also see familyfunds cheat in the Nightlife section below

Twins

Forcetwins - allows you to change a birth into twins. This cheat needs the Open For Business expansion pack, see the Open For Business section below for more details.

Note: If you don't have the Open For Business expansion pack, there are no other known cheats that can guarantee or increase the chances of having twins. You may be able to find 3rd party hacks or game mods which can guarantee twins instead.

Miscellaneous

moveObjects on/off - allows you to move, place or delete items which you can't normally.

Why can't I open or close the cheat box?

To Open The Cheat Box

To open the cheat box, press the Ctrl + Shift + C keys, it should open in the top left corner of the screen. Enter your cheat, then press the Enter key.

If you still can't get the cheat box to open, this is often because cursor enhancing software is installed, such as Cursor XP. Disable this to use the cheat console:
  • Click the Start menu on your computer.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • If the you are in Category View and the right hand side o f the window says 'Pick A Category', switch to the 'Classic View' by clicking the link in the left hand side of the window.
  • Click the 'Mouse' control panel.
  • Click the CursorXP tab.
  • Put a check in the box that says "Disable all".
  • Click Apply.

To Close The Cheat Box

Usually entering a cheat correctly will close the cheat box, however if you cannot close it try the following:
  • Click your mouse into the cheat box window and type exit, then press the Enter key.
  • Try hitting the Esc (Escape) key on your keyboard, or click your mouse into the cheat box window and then press Esc.
  • Try exiting the house.
  • Try exiting the neighbourhood.
  • Try exiting the game.

Why isn't my cheat code working?

Misspelled - It's easy to misspell a cheat so double check that you are using the correct spelling. Note that the cheat console uses US English.

Right expansion installed - I have seen on occasion some players mention that they can use a particular cheat even though they don't have the expansion installed that the cheat was introduced in, instead they have a later pack; however this is by no means the case for all cheats. If you cannot use a particular cheat and it isn't available in the base game, check you have the right expansion installed, in order to use the cheat.

Capitalization - Some players find that they need to enter the cheats using capital letters in the right places, others find they can enter all or some cheats in lower case only. If you are having problems with a particular cheat, try entering it using capitals where shown.

Hacks - Occasionally a 3rd party hack or other custom content, can cause a corruption to your game files which may interfere with a cheat working correctly. If you are having problems with a cheat and use custom content, move your Downloads folder to the desktop temporarily and restart the game, see if the cheat will work now.

The Sims 2 base game cheats

These cheats should be available to all players, with or without any expansion packs.

help

Lists all the cheats in the game.

help [cheatname]

Displays specific information about the cheat. Replace the [cheatname] with the actual cheatname (without the brackets).

exit

Closes the cheat window.

expand

Expands or contracts the cheat window.

motherlode

Adds 50,000 to household funds.

kaching

Adds 1000 to household funds.

moveObjects [on/off]

Replace [on/off] with on or off (without the brackets). This cheat removes footprint limitation for all object placement in Buy Mode and Build Mode. Note that using this cheat allows you to delete objects that normally cannot be deleted, such as Sims, the mailbox, and the garbage can. If you delete these objects, there is no way to get them back, so be careful.

Note: move_objects on/off may also work.

boolProp snapObjectsToGrid [false/true]

Will allow you to move objects without the constraints of the grid, so you can move them in smaller increments. Replace [false/true] with false or true (without the brackets).

aging [on/off]

Prevents Sims from aging. This can disrupt the carefully tuned gameplay balance, and will prevent little Johnny from ever growing up, so treat this cheat with care as well. Replace [on/off] with on or off (without the brackets).

autoPatch [on/off]

This cheat lets you re-enable notifications when there is a game update available for The Sims 2. Just turn Autopatch on and go to the Custom Content Browser (the little snowflake button on the UCP in the neighbourhood). If there's an update available you'll be asked whether you want to download it. Replace [on/off] with on or off (without the brackets).

boolprop constrainFloorElevation [true/false]

This will allow you to change terrain while there are still objects on it. It can be used for things like putting tiles on slopes and having homes on uneven land. Be careful though as it can mess up your game. Replace [true/false] with true or false (without the brackets).

slowMotion [value]

Replace [value] with a number from 0 - 8 (without the brackets). The slowMotion cheat takes one parameter: the "slowness" setting (such as slowMotion 4). This value ranges from 0 to 8 where 0 is normal speed and 8 is the slowest speed.

Deleteallcharacters

Can only be used in the neighbourhood screen. The cheat deletes all sims in that neighbourhood.

Note: I've found that this cheat can cause problems with lots that are inhabited with pre-made sims in University and Bluewater Village lots, if you haven't been into those lots first and saved at least once. I'd recommend you either use the cheat in the base neighbourhood before you associate any University or Bluewater Village neighbourhoods, or first save any lots in those sub-neighbourhoods which contain Maxis pre-made sims.

terraintype [desert/temperate]

Replace [desert/temperate] with desert or temperate (without the brackets). Can only be used in the neighbourhood screen. This cheat changes the terrain type.

intProp maxNumOfVisitingSims [X]

Replace the [X] with the number of guests you want to have as your new limit (without the brackets). Be warned though, that your game automatically sets the number based on your machine specifications. Changing this can decrease your game performance.

boolProp enablePostProcessing [true/false]

Replace [true/false] with true or false (without the brackets). This cheat enables the use of postprocessing cheats; very useful for movie making. Please note that you must have a video card that can handle pixel shaders in order to successfully use this cheat. If you use the cheats and you don't have pixel shaders, the screen will most likely go partially dark, and will not come baclalalalail you turn off enablePostProcessing. If you turn on postprocessing, and you turn on cinematics, and a cinematic plays, you may also experience unwanted graphical glitches.

bloom [r g b x]

[r g b] is the color and [x] is the bloom amount (0.0 - 1.0). This cheat adds a blur effect, like a sitcom flashback moment. Must have entered boolProp enablePostProcessing true for this cheat to work.

vignette [centerX centerY X]

Replace [X] with the vignetteing factor between 0.0 and 1.0 (without the brackets). Adds a blur effect from the specified center. Using 'vignette 0.5 0.5 0.5' should put some blurry bits at the edge of the screen. 'Vignette 0.5 0.5 1.0' is maximum edge blurriness. Must have entered boolProp enablePostProcessing true for this cheat to work.

filmGrain [val]

Replace [val] with a value between 0.0 and 1.0 (without the brackets). This cheat makes the screen grainy. Must have entered boolProp enablePostProcessing true for this cheat to work.

letterBox [val]

Replace [val] with a value between 0.0 and 0.4 (without the brackets). Adds a letterbox effect to the view. Must have entered boolProp enablePostProcessing true for this cheat to work.

University expansion cheats

These cheats were introduced with the University expansion pack; some of them may also have been included with later expansions, however they will not be available to you if you only have the Sims 2 base game installed.

changeLotZoning [type]

Replace [type] with either residential, community, greek, dorm or secretsociety (without the brackets). This cheat changes the zoning type of the lot. Before rezoning a lot using this cheat, make sure there are no Sims currently living in the lot. To use this cheat, enter the lot that you would like to rezone, and then enter the cheat, choosing one of the above zoning options. Exit the lot and when you re-enter it, the type will have changed.

boolProp dormSpecificToolsDisabled [true/false]

Replace [true/false] with true or false (without the brackets). This cheat enables build/buy mode tools that would normally be disabled when in a dorm lot.

boolProp allow45DegreeAngleOfRotation [true/false]

Replace [true/false] with true or false (without brackets). This cheat allows users to rotate any object in 45 degree increments instead of the 90 degree increments used for most objects but note the following:
  • You need to use the < and > (or , and . ) keys to rotate the object.
  • Some large (i.e. multi-tile objects) may not visually appear correct at 45 degree angles.
  • This should not be used on windows or doors, as they will already snap to diagonal walls.
  • No guarantee that sims can interact with all objects that are at this orientation, but most should work.
setHighestAllowedLevel [level

Replace [level] with a number (without the brackets), but note the following:
  • The current lot is the one that is affected.
  • The level is always greater than the default of 4.
  • There is no limit with regards to memory usage. However, the more resources you use, may lead to game instability.

Nightlife expansion cheats

These cheats were introduced with the Nightlife expansion pack; some of them may also have been included with later expansions, however they will not be available to you if you only have the Sims 2 base game, or earlier packs installed.

familyfunds [name][#]

This cheat can be used in the neighbourhood view with the household selected, either by clicking on the lot or by clicking on the family in the sim bin, or you can use the cheat in the normal manner from inside the lot. Replace [name] with the name of the family selected (without the brackets). Make sure you type the name exactly as it is written for the family, with the capitals in the correct place. Replace [#] with the amount of money you want your family to have (without the brackets). Make sure you don't use any full stops, commas or other punctuation to separate the thousands, as it may not work. Also, you have no need to enter the simoleon symbol (§) either. You can, however, put either + or - before the amount if you want to add or subtract funds, rather than specify an exact amount.

Example 1: You have a family called Biggins in a lot in your neighbourhood, and you want to add another $10,000 to their funds.
  • Select the family in your neighbourhood or in the sim bin.
  • Enter [familyfunds Biggins +10000] (without the brackets) into the cheat box.
  • Your Biggins family will now have $10,000 added to their family funds.
Example 2: You have a family called Biggins in a lot in your neighbourhood, and you want them to have $50,000 in available funds.
  • Select the family in your neighbourhood or in the sim bin.
  • Enter [familyfunds Biggins 50000] (without the brackets) into the cheat box.
  • Your Biggins family will now have $50,000 available family funds.
roofslopeangle [15-75]

Replace [15-75] with a number between 15 and 75 (without the brackets). This cheat is used to change the slope angle of all the roofs on the lot.

ShowHeadlines [on/off]

Replace [on/off] with either on or off (without the brackets). This cheat removes all the thought balloons (including relationship change indicators) that appear over your sims heads.

unlockCareerRewards

This cheat unlocks all of the career rewards for the sim that is currently selected. Check that sims career reward catalogue after use to find the reward you want, and place on your lot as normal.

maxMotives

This cheat maximizes all the needs for all sims on the lot.

Note: It has been reported by some players that they experience side effects of using this cheat. These include problems with lights not working correctly (i.e. they are reversed and go off when you enter a room, and on when you leave it), and guest sims not staying more than a few minutes after arriving. One suggestion is to enter the cheat a second time to reset the side effects. You can also patch the game to eliminate the problems too.

motiveDecay [on/off]

Replace [on/off] with either on or off (without the brackets). This cheat switches on or off the natural needs decay that all sims on the lot exhibit. Use off to stop the decay and on to restart it.

aspirationPoints [#]

Replace [#] with the amount of aspiration points you would like to add (without the brackets). This cheat adds the specified amount of aspiration points to the total for the currently selected sim only. This is useful for getting the more expensive aspiration rewards.

lockAspiration [on/off]

Replace [on/off] with either on or off (without the brackets). This cheat switches on or off the natural aspiration level decay that all sims exhibit.* Use on to stop the decay and off to restart it.

*Except sims who have achieved a lifetime want and received permanent platinum aspiration.

aspirationLevel [0-5]

Replace [0-5] with a number between 0 and 5 (without the brackets). This cheat changes the current aspiration level for the currently selected sim only. Enter 0 to put your sim close to aspiration failure, and 5 to put them in platinum aspiration level.

Note: If you use this cheat first to put your sim into platinum aspiration, then follow that up with the lockAspiration on cheat, you can have sims with permanent platinum aspiration.

agesimscheat [on/off]

Replace [on/off] with either on or off (without the brackets). This cheat adds the 'Set Age' interaction to the menu of possible interactions when you click on a sim. Any sim you click on can be set to any age group you desire.

setLotLightingFile [filename/clear]

Replace [filename/clear] with either the name of the file that you are going to use, or clear if you want to restore the default (without putting the brackets). With this cheat you can alter the lighting by choosing an alternative lighting file. The original can be found in *C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 Nightlife\TSData\Res\Lights. Place your new lighting file in this folder and use the cheat to specify the file name for the current lot only. Use clear if you want to restore the default.

*The directory path assumes the default location was used when installing the expansion. If you did not install to the default location, be sure you specify the correct drive and path to the file.

Open For Business expansion cheats

These cheats were introduced with the Open For Business expansion pack; some of them may also have been included with later expansions, however they will not be available to you if you only have the Sims 2 base game, or earlier packs installed.

Console Cheats

These cheats need to be entered into the cheats console as outlined above.

AddneighbortoFamilycheat [on/off]

With this cheat you are able to press the Shift key and left click on an NPC to add that NPC to the current household. To use the cheat enter it into the cheat console replacing the [on/off] with either on or off (without the brackets). You can use this cheat to add more than 8 sims to your lot too.

Note: This cheat doesn't work on the service NPC's (maid, gardener, repairman etc.) while they are on your lot and engaged in their normal duties, if you want to add these NPC's then you'll have to invite them over socially or (if your sim has a high enough friendship level with them) wait until they have finished their duties and offer to remain afterwards. This cheat won't work at all on NPC's such as the Grim Reaper or Mrs Crumplebottom.

Forcetwins

To use this cheat first select the pregnant sim that you would like to give birth to twins, then enter the cheat into the cheats console. This transforms the pregnancy into a twin birth.

Note: If you prefer you can have your sims eat cheesecake instead. Unlike the actual cheat there isn't a guarantee that your sim will give birth to twins but it makes it much more likely.

Plumbbobtoggle [on/off]

Replace [on/off] with either on or off (without the brackets). This cheats turns the plumb bob above the heads of your sims invisible and is ideal for story or video makers.

Build Mode Cheats

Unlike the console cheats that need to be entered into the cheats window, the cheat below can just be used as and when you need it without bringing up the cheats window.

Wall Placement Restrictions Removed

Hold the Alt and Ctrl keys while placing your object on the wall.

Usually you cannot place more than one item on a single wall slot/space but this method allows you to bypass this restriction. Holding the keys mentioned while placing your objects on the wall will allow you to place multiple objects on the same piece of wall.

Apartment Life expansion cheats

These cheats were introduced with the Apartment Life expansion pack; they will not be available to you if you only have the Sims 2 base game, or earlier packs installed.

changeLotZoning [type]

Replace [type] with either residential, community, or apartmentbase (without the brackets). This cheat changes the zoning type of the lot. Before rezoning a lot using this cheat, make sure there are no Sims currently living in the lot. To use this cheat, enter the lot that you would like to rezone, then enter the cheat, choosing one of the above zoning options. Exit the lot and when you re-enter it, the type will have changed.

Note: Be careful if with using this cheat on a beach lot as it can corrupt both the lot and the ocean. It's probably better to avoid using it on beach lots completely.

printLotClass

This prints the lot's class (low, middle, or high) as well as the corresponding numerical lot class value.

changeLotClassification [class]

Replace [class] with either low, middle or high. This changes the lot classification of the lot. The lot will remain this classification until the following cheat is used.

clearLotClassValue

This clears any "changeLotClassification" cheat used on the lot and sets the lot class to the correct calculated value.

You can also use the following commands in the cheat box for enabling the buy and build modes again in an apartment lot, without reverting to a residential lot again.

boolprop aptsublotspecifictoolsdisabled [true/false]

Replace [true/false] with either true or false, use false to enable the build and buy mode controls and true to switch them back off again. Best used within an apartment room.

boolProp aptBaseSpecificToolsDisabled [true/false]

Replace [true/false] with either true or false, use false to enable the build and buy mode controls and true to switch them back off again. Best used outside an apartment room, such as in common areas.

I don't see why it should make a difference, it's possible that there may be a corruption to that family now which preventing use. Have you tried the boolprop on a different lot, in the neighbourhood screen or indeed, in different neighbourhood.

If anyone is interested, there is a fab little program from Aussie Topenders that you can use called Lucas Easy Sims2 Cheats, essentially you type in the cheats you use the most and assign them an F key (your function keys) so instead of having to repeatedly type in cheats in game, you press the right F key instead

Aussie Topenders Programs - its the second one down.

I do not really know, although half way through trying to get the cheat to work a note came up on my game and it crashed. It said something about pressing the shift button to much and would I like to cancel sticky keys.I pressed no and it went back to the neighbour hood I was playing.I have had no problems since then.M aybe I pressed the wrong key or something.

If you press the shift key 5 times fast it thinks you want it to stay on so you can click shift then a letter without still holding shift. mine used to do it all the time.

It's boolProp useShaders [true/false]. Not sure if it will help you at all since usually folks want to know how to switch it on so they can see the fish in their ponds. Could be worth trying though.

So for me it would be this? False to turn shaders off? I'll do anything to stop getting BSOD's!
