Every year, Uruguayan newspaper "El País" chooses the best of the year, just like France Football, out of the votes cast by sports journalists from 26 countries. This year's best European Footballer award has fallen on Ronaldinho, who wins the title for the third year in a row. Best European Manager of the Year award goes to José Mourinho, with only a 3 vote lead over his closest follower, Frank Rikjaard.
The awards for the best of South America will be published tomorrow. The race for best South American Footballer is led by Matías Fernández (Colo-Colo), closely followed by Rodrigo Palacio (Boca Juniors) with only a 2 vote difference.

Chilean sensation Matías Fernández (just transferred to Villarreal from Colo-Colo) finally came on top of the polls, with 62 votes, and was chosen as best American footballer of the year. After what it seemed would be a very close finish, he put some distance from his closest follower, Rodrigo Palacio (Boca Juniors), who got 53 votes. Third place went to Palacio's former team-mate Fernando Gago (now in Real Madrid), fourth place to Brazilian goalie Rogerio Ceni (Sao Paulo), and in fifth place there was a draw between Fernandao (Internacional) and Humberto Suazo (Colo-Colo).
Thus, Fernández becomes the third Chilean to receive the award, following on the footsteps of Elías Figueroa (1974, 1975, 1976) and Marcelo Salas (1997), although he's the first player ever to receive the award while playing in the Chilean league. Also, he became the first player to be crowned without being nominated in previous years. Sadly, Colo-Colo's Argentine manager Claudio Borghi was also crowned as best of the year in his category (yeah, Colo-Colo are my team's archrivals ), with a 2 vote lead over his fellow countryman Alfio Basile (Argentina national team). Third place went to Internacional's Abel Braga.

Don't know really. If it were for me, Borghi wouldn't have been on the list altogether... but that's just personal enmity :P.
Still, I believe Borghi got the award because he squeezed every bit of potential out from his team, lots of unknown players had a breakthrough year. Also, Colo-Colo won both League championships and reached the Sudamericana final. Having Fernández and Suazo in the squad helped too, I guess.
