I make that 3 midfielders. All 3,aren't renowned for their tracking back. They'll need more than Diarra for a season.

Plus,what if he got injured.

They've got all the pretty passing in the world,in depth at Real Madrid. Holding midfield, they've got Diarra and who else? Guti? If so,they need to prioritise.

As an aside, please don't do that patronising "forget him?" type of statement,it achieves nothing and irritates the hell out of me.
errr another glaring error-Guti doesn't play holding midfield. Also there is Albiol who although a centre back could step up and take over from Diarra. As could M. Diarra who hasn't been sold(not sure if he will be...) and Gago. Though Gago isn't exactly a tough midfielder, he's more a deep playmaker.

You don't seem very clued up on Madrid, hence the "forget him", and this post suggests the same.

Diarra-Alonso
Ronaldo-Kaka-Robben/Silva/Ribery
Benzema

or
Diarra-Alonso
Ronaldo-Kaka
Benzema-Higuain

Both seem balanced enough, Kaka is capable of tracking back and it's not much more offensive than Barca's.

I'll stop now...that must've been the most pro Madrid post I've made.

This would be their best bet. It's basically a carbon copy of Liverpool's formation, and for it to be successful they're stealing our anchorman.

Couple of things predicted by this "source".

*Liverpool FC are currently in advanced negotiations with D.Villa and D.Silva in a £40mil deal seeing A.Riera and A.Voronin Valencia bound.
7:08 AM Jul 5th from web

*The numbers touted in the papers for X.Alonso and A.Arbeloa are complete fabrication. Both players WILL join madrid but not at those figures

*D.Pacheco will also head to the mestalla on a season long loan, something Rafa was at first reluctant to sanction. You heard it here first.

*For the numerous people asking...The valencia deal HAS been agreed in principal. will go through as soon as Alonso deal has been finalised.

*Some very suprising details on Rafa's 40 player "hit-list" for possible summer targets. Carlos Tevez still remains very high on the list...
7:34 AM Jul 13th

*Even more suprisingly, West Ham's Mark Noble has been marked as a "priority" target.

HEM.. Honestly, I can't believe they even attempt with some of these rumours.

I said "Guti?" as an indication of "who else would they have there?". Perhaps should have been clearer. My belief,at last look of a newspaper was M.Diarra was linked with Pompey and another club(Spurs?). Gago's never impressed me much, but then again,i only watch Madrid every now and again.

I look at Barca and a see a midfield trio of Xavi,Toure,Iniesta. Toure,is the sort of player i think Madrid should be bringing in. Someone to sit deep and tackle/intercept the ball in the midfield.

Albiol is a Centre Back and i daresay may be there to replace Cannavaro in the forseeable future.

Alonso's at his best when able to spray the ball about. If he had to sit well back,i don't think he'd be as effective.

He wouldn't have to sit back though, it's pretty much the same as Liverpool...Diarra instead of Mascherano with Alonso playing the same role.

In which case i bring up my other point.

What if Diarra gets injured? Who's going to cover that role. Given that Robben could be gone and they might not get Silva and Ribery, they'll need Gago to play in an attacking role.

Gago is not the kind of player who would replace Robben, he's pretty much a holding/defensive midfielder through and through.

If Sneijder is still at the club he'll probably play as a false winger, as he did last year, if not then Marcelo will.

Sneijder's getting moved on by all accounts and isn't Marcelo supposed to be Dani Alves-u-like wing back.

Depends on what accounts you're basing that on, reportedly Pellegrini asked for Sneijder to be removed off the transfer list, and suddenly the transfer rumors stopped (this was about a week ago).

And he was supposed to be... but under Juande Marcelo flourished in that LW/LAM role

So will Xabi Alonso play alongside Kaka or on the wing?

Neither?

Based on what Pellegrini uses I've come up with this guess, if Xabi is signed:

---------Casillas--------
-----Pepe----Albiol-----
Ramos-----------Heinze(?)
------Lass--Alonso------
Ronaldo-------Kaka------
--------Higuain----------
----------Benzema------

And the bench.
