I was going to post this in the La Liga discussion. but I thought only a few people may see it, and it's quite an interesting article.

Best part is that more than 75% of the fans voted that they would rather be relegated than break the cantera tradition, the fact that they have never been relegated from La Liga and have 24 Copa del Rey's is very impressive. They've always been able to produce quality as well, dispute the Basque region being small, as seen by Llorente, Iraola and Javi M who have all garnered interest from big clubs.

I have great respect for Bilbao and this tradition. They are awesome for never being relegated even tho they only use basque players.

I have total respect for Bilbao. Even if they despise us. I don't care. They walk the talk. When one says proud of being Basque, it's reflected by the players they have on their squad (unlike some other team). I t'd be nice to have other clubs like this but would probably make more sense in a smaller city as the big cities are very cosmopolitan and having a melting pot of players only reflects the city.

Takes a lot for a club to keep their traditions throughout every circumstance.. They still bring quality players through their ranks too..
Credit to them, it's also always a challenge on FM..

here's something interesting... Javier Iturriaga is a player of Basque ancestry who was born and grew up in Mexico City... he then went to Spain and played for Athletic Bilbao... and back when Hugo Sanchez was in charge of the Mexico NT, he was supposedly monitoring Iturriaga's progress... but with his sacking, a potential callup went down with it... now, 'Itu' somehow fell off the radar to a 3rd division Spanish team...

It's quite ironic how Bilbao's biggest rival Real Socidedad also held firm to the cantera but broke their tradition in the 90s, they shot up the leauge, finished second in La Liga (losing on the last day), and made the champions leauge, all depending on great foreign signings. Where are they now? La Segunda.
