History -

Middlesbrough had never won a major trophy in their 119 year history and came very close to going out of business altogether until current chairman Steve Gibson changed all of this by investing millions in building a superb new stadium - The Riverside - and attracting some of the game's top stars to Middlesbrough.

It hasn't always been like this though as Boro have struggled in the shadow of their North East neighbours, Newcastle and Sunderland. Middlesbrough's best ever league position was third in 1914 but their best recent period came under the management of Jack Charlton who took over in 1973.
The Teessiders were promoted to Division One a year later with the highest ever points total and managed to stay in the top league for eight seasons before slipping back into Division Two. Worse was to follow as they dropped into Division Three and almost went out of business but having been saved, they began their climb back to soccer's elite.

With promotion in 1992, Middlesbrough became founder members of the FA Premier League but, after a good start, they faltered and were relegated. After two years in Division One, they came back with more ambition and better facilities than their fans have ever seen, not to mention a team full of some of the top players in Europe. However, despite reaching two cup finals, they ended up being relegated again, this time in controversial circumstances as three points were deducted from their total following manager Bryan Robson's decision to cancel a match mid-season.

After just one season they bounced back and stayed up, though their fortunes have fluctuated as stars have come and gone. Robson came perilously close to taking them back down again until Terry Venables was brought in to 'assist'. He helped Boro avoid relegation, but did not want to take permanent charge, though it had become clear to Gibson that Robson's time as manager had come to an end.

Promising young coach Steve McClaren was brought in from Manchester United, where he had been Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant, and he has worked hard to turn Middlesbrough from a team full of highly-paid foreign mercenaries into one more suited to the battles of surviving in the Barclaycard Premiership, ending the "boom and bust" years at The Riverside stadium. He topped that in 2004 by guiding Boro to their first major trophy, beating Bolton 2-1 to win the Carling Cup.

He took Boro to the UEFA Cup Final in 2006, and that turned out to be his last game in charge as he was appointed England manager after the World Cup, with club captain Gareth Southgate taking over managerial duties.

Facts

Middlesbrough were the first English football club to broadcast time-delayed full-match footage of their league games on their own channel, "Boro TV", in August 2001.

Middlesbrough's official matchday programme, Redsquare, was the 2006–07 Programme Monthly Programme of the Year.

It was announced in December 2007 that Middlesbrough football club had carried out more community work during 2006–07 than any other Premier League club, rising from second place the previous year, with the club making 318 appearances – almost twice the Premier League average of 162. They were in the top two for community appearances again in 2007–08, with 374 – a 17% increase on the previous season.

6 players who have played for Boro have been inducted in to the English Football Hall Of Fame, these players are, Bryan Robson, Paul Gascoigne, Brian Clough, Jack Charlton, Wilf Mannion and Viv Anderson.

I dont feel sorry for Southgate because him been a nice bloke is exactly whats caused us to be in this position, he's still to friendly with the players, and sees himself as "one of the lads".

Im sorry but if Southgate was a manager for Steve Gibson's company Bulkhaul he would have been fired a long time ago.

It ain't going to be easy for Boro, but they got themselves into this mess. They're a club with a lot of history and I definitely want them to stay up even if they have a good recent record against us.

I'm not sure how many posts your going to get in this thread Doc since they're isn't many Boro fans on this board, but do your best to bump it before every match and add match previews and all that, like in the sunderland thread.

Boro will win this one 2-1 I think Afonso Alves to score. But its going to be difficult because Brede Hangeland is a fantastic defender.

I will tell you a story though...I didn't really steal a dog but every homeless person has one. Maybe for the dogs sake it would be better to fight to the death than be an object of pity for maggots that actually buy big issue... ( i'll let you know on this front )

ouch, thats a might hard run up. realistically, you need a win against fulham and newcastle to stay up, and that wont be easy...

Who do you support?

We have a good record against them.
We drew 2-2 with them at home last season with Alves getting 2 so hopefully we could get a point out of them

i support liverpool, forgot to say that lol.

i must admit i have a soft spot for borough, i want them to stay up but sadly i cant really see it, realistically you will be lucky to get 7 points out of your last load of games, and that would take some very good results. i think that if you dont beat fulham then your as good as down
