Default Eredivisie Thread

Eredivisie
The Eredivisie (English: Honorary Division) is the highest football league in the Netherlands.

From 1990 to 1999, the official name of the league was PTT Telecompetitie (after the sponsor, PTT Telecom), which was changed to KPN Telecompetitie in 1999 and to KPN Eredivisie in 2000. From 2002 to 2005, the league was called the Holland Casino Eredivisie. From the 2005-06 season onwards, the league will be sponsored by the Sponsorloterij lottery, but for legal reasons, its name cannot be attached to the league.

The top division consists of 18 clubs. Each club faces every other club twice during the season, once at home and once away. At the end of each season, the bottom club is automatically relegated to the second level of the Dutch league system, the Eerste Divisie (First Division), with the champion of the Eerste Divisie automatically promoted to the Eredivisie. The next two clubs from the bottom of the Eredivisie go to separate promotion/relegation playoffs. The playoffs are played in two groups. Each group has one Eredivisie club and three high-placed clubs from the Eerste Divisie. In both promotion/relegation playoff groups, each club plays a home-and-away series with the other clubs. The winner of each playoff group plays in the following season's Eredivisie, with the other teams going to the Eerste Divisie.

AFC Ajax has won the most titles, 29. PSV Eindhoven is next with 21, and Feyenoord follows with 14. Since 1965, these three giants have won all except for one title (the 1980/81 title went to AZ '67).

Teams 08/09
Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV, SC Heerenveen, FC Twente, AZ, FC Groningen, Heracles Almelo, Vitesse, NEC, NAC Breda, Willem II, Ado Den Haag, Sparta Rotterdam, FC Volendam, Roda JC, De Graafschap and FC Utrecht.

A bit of Eredivisie news I stumbled upon earlier

Quote:
Misfiring Ajax insist Van Basten's job is safe

By Soccernet staff
Ajax coach Marco van Basten has received the equivalent of the dreaded vote of confidence after the club's latest defeat in what is rapidly becoming a season to forget for the Amsterdam giants.

Ajax have taken only four points from five Eredivisie matches since the winter break and now lie third in the standings, some 14 points behind runaway leaders AZ Alkmaar.
But despite Sunday's 4-1 mauling away to Vitesse Arnhem, Ajax director Rik van den Boog insists van Basten does not need to worry about his position and insists the former Netherlands national team boss retains the support of the board.
''He is not up for discussion, come on,'' Van den Boog told newspaper De Telegraaf . ''It's unpleasant and bad that you see the championship go in such a short time, after such a disastrous month of January.
''As a director I hope to never be part of that again. But on the other hand it is a fact and you have to deal with it.''
With AZ running away with the league, Ajax's best hope is to finish second, a position which brings with it a berth in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League; that place is currently occupied by Steve McClaren's Twente Enschede who have lost just three games all season, half as many as Ajax.
Last week Ajax's training sessions were disrupted by a 300-strong group of supporters frustrated at the club's recent poor run. The fans even occupied the pitch in protest and demanded an explanation from van Basten.
Despite the inconvenience to the team Van den Boog has refused to condemn the protesters, saying: ''Football is emotional and, as I understand, the fans expressed their emotions in a correct way. The fans handle the situation with respect.''
Ajax plan to meet with a delegation of supporters about the club's current situation on Monday.

No offence but i find this league boring. hah, i remember when Ajax had all those superstars (Vd.Sar , Kluivert etc.) all from the Netherlands National team (Untill they got sold) those where fun times.

I also remember Feyenoord when they won the Uefa Cup with Van Hooijdonk and Van Persie, that was a fun time also.

But now i cant even watch 45 minutes of a game.

I'll never find this league boring. Although the level of football may be not as high as it used to be, it's always fun to watch.

I think the Dutch league is great because of how many goals are scored which would be something that is would probably interest an American audience but sadly the games aren't broadcast here. Then often games start at 6:30 AM local time here which is rather early

Anyways AZ pretty much can be declared champions elect now, I don't see them even possibly being caught.

Toivonen has been great in his first games for PSV and Elm has been even better his first games for Heerenveen and Andersson was great for Groningen before his injury and Berg has been as good as always (i hope he gets some playing time in the game against Austria).

Elm is seriously good, and he's got a younger brother who is almost as good. They will be the next big swedish players just wait.

I like the dutch league, very entertaining. Probably the most entertaining league in europe.

From the few moments of Eredivisie football I've seen, it looks like a high quality league. Obviously, not up there with Prem, La Liga etc..(not a major Euro league), but still, some good teams there.

I watched AZ last game and I know that he played as a RB (or CB). But I don't know if he played well or not, to be honest.

Here you can watch the highlights of the game:

Just have a look at Dembele, he's awesome

Toivonen, has been great, but it's a shame he's suspended for 2 matches now

dutch football is my favorite football to watch. i just wish i could watch it more.

van basten should be fired and never allowed to manage again, he ruins his teams. great player, bad manager.

Hmm, I don't agree. Our players are just playing bad at the moment and that's not his fault IMO. I think we have to give him a chance!

Why do they score so many goals in the Dutch league? Are the strikers really good or are the keepers really poor?

What happened to Ajax in their last game, seriously I don't understand that result!?!

Van basten is pretty decent tho. Netherlands played great on Euro 2008 as well but they cocked without it being Van Basten's fault.

Most strikers in Holland are really good and will play in the EPL/Serie A/La Liga within a few years. On the other hand, most defenders in Holland are really poor. So it's a combination of both

I just found a funny video on youtube. It shows a FC Utrecht 'hooligan'

YouTube - Jongentje is kwaad op scheidsrechter (FC Utrecht - VVV)

I got FC Groningen as my league team on Fifa 09. Was wondering where did Powel go? and who usually plays up top now with Berg. I've been using Lovre.

The Netherlands are known for their lack of concentration on defending.
If a team decides to keep the ball and "play it safe" or clear it just in case, the audience get upset and boo you. A good defence is very very hard to find in Holland, which is probably why you don't see any dutch teams getting to the knockout stages any-longer.

And this is also the reason why the strikers get a lot of goals, the defensive part of their game is rather embarrasing.

You see it in the NT as well, half-decent defense. Relies HEAVILY on counter-attacking (how the hell our national coach failed to see that I don't know, who the hell sends 7-8 players into attack against fricken Holland....). Guus Hidink did an impeccable job showing us that during the Euro2008, where he had Russia exploit the dutch counter-attack.
