Default Yanks Abroad

This thread is for listing off any Americans who are currently playing abroad in other countries (excluding Canada). My list of players comes from yanks-abroad.com and soccerbyives.net, since yanks abroad does not seem to count those in Mexico as playing abroad.

So if you have any one to add to the list, I will do so. And its tougher to get some information about some of the guys, so if you can, let us know about their playing time and such.

Also, you can use this thread to talk about potential transfers for Americans overseas, such as the possibility of Landon moving to Bayern Munich, and others such as Kljestan and Cooper.

Now some of these people could have their nationalities argued. But for the most part, these are going to be the guys who are eligible to play for America.

Hold on guys. I am still working on the list. There are currently two Americans in Italy though. Gabriel Ferrari, and Danny Szetela. Gabby plays in C1, and Szetela plays for Brescia in Serie B.

If the country is listed, that means that there will be players there.

Oh. I was just taking Serie A into consideration. C1 is more amateur football. The one at Brescia should turn out well. They've churned out the likes of Pirlo and Baggio.

Ferrari is contracted to Sampdoria, but I don't think he will ever make it back there. And Szetela is at Brescia on loan from Racing Santander, but I also think he won't be going back there as well.

Wow! Didnt know Norway had that many. Anyway, I rate Troy Perkins very highly, he is a formidable keeper. Also, I hope Rosenborg sign Kenny Cooper

Yeah, I was surprised about the amount of in Norway. And Perkins is great, a former DC United player. And the KCoop rumours will probably pick up again in January.

Alright, time for a bit of statistical analysis of the list I compiled:

There are 85 players on the list. The most from one country/league, is England/Wales, which has 15 players, or 18% of the Americans overseas. The next biggest is Norway with 13, and then Germany with 12.

Some names were left off from Germany and England though, for playing in the lowest leagues. With those names, England would have closer to 20, and Germany, about 15.

There are a couple of countries with just a couple of players.

As for position wise:

17 are GKs. That is a bunch, considering there is only one position on the field.

24 are strikers/forwards.
25 are defenders.
19 are midfielders.

As for where they are playing:

No big surprises that there are just two in Italy, and one in Spain. America footballing wise is more aligned with the England/Germany style of footballing. More direct, and more emphasis put on efficiency. Whereas in Italy and Spain, more technical play is required, and there is a bit more flair and style.

Personally, I was a bit surprised at the amount in Norway. I had no idea that there were 13 playing in Norway. I wonder if they have some connections there, similar to the players in Mexico, Brazil, and Greece for example.

Again, if there is any names you think I left off, let me know, and I will add them to the list.

And some of the performances from Americans today:

Tim Howard allowed 1 goal in Everton's 1-1 draw with Middlesborough.
Carlos Bocanegra played all 90 minutes in Rennes' 2-1 win over Monaco.
Freddy Adu came on in the 69th minute of Monaco's 2-1 loss to Rennes.
Jozy Altidore did not dress in Villarreal's 2-2 draw.
Oguchi Onyewu played all 90 minutes in Standard Liege's 1-1 draw with Lokeren.
Lee Nguyen got 8 minutes in Randers 2-2 draw with AC Horsens.
Michael Orozco will get all 90 minutes, but Toluca is beating San Luis 1-0 at the moment.
Danny Califf played all 90 in Midtjlland's 3-0 loss to Copenhagen.

No, he plays for Italy now. So I won't count him. Because if I did, then there would be plenty more to count. Such as Boaz Myhill, Jesus Padilla, and plenty of others who play for Mexico. So I won't list any of those who play for another national team.

And for the same reasons, some might be removed, such as Subotic, who may choose Serbia over the USA.

I consider Rossi Italian as his parents came from Italy and chooses to play for Italy. I'm sure if it were the other way around, people would consider him American if he had American parents that moved to Italy before he was born and he chose to play for them instead of Italy.
