Engelaar deal in the bag

Schalke 04 have finally agreed terms with FC Twente Enschede over the transfer of Orlando Engelaar.

The 28-year-old Dutch international, who was an ever-present for the Netherlands at EURO 2008, will on Tuesday put pen to paper on a three-year deal running through to 30 June 2011, subject to passing a medical.

Sporting Director Andreas Müller said, "Orlando has come on tremendously both at club and international level." Engelaar had said in the wake of the EUROs that he would like to move to Schalke. Twente acceded to the request, and the two clubs have spent the last few days wrapping up the formalities.

"The controller"

Müller is confident the 1.97 metre-tall left-footed midfielder will bring an added dimension to the Royal Blues' game: "He wasn't called 'the controller' in Holland for nothing. He's calm, very reliable in possession, and has a good footballing brain, and he could become one of our key players. On top of that, Orlando is as well acquainted as anybody with Fred Rutten's philosophy of the game."

Engelaar played the past two seasons under Rutten at FC Twente, and last time around the provincial club surprisingly made the qualifying stages for the Champions League. Little wonder then that his coach, once and future, is a fan.

"Orlando is a real all-rounder who can play in a number of positions", says Rutten enthusiastically. Engelaar has been deployed as a forward, left-winger and playmaker by his previous clubs.

Number 37

Born in Rotterdam on 24 August 1979, Engelaar played for Feyenoord in his youth. In 2000 he moved to NAC Breda for whom he made 98 league appearances in four years, scoring 22 goals. From there he moved to KRC Gent in Belgium, returning to the Netherlands to join FC Twente in 2006.

In Enschede he played 56 league games (eight goals), and in 2008 led the team into the qualifying rounds for the Champions League. He made his international debut on 2 June 2007 and has since accumulated ten appearances for the Netherlands. Engelaar will be wearing the number 37 shirt at Schalke.

No Olympic trip for Diego

Werder Bremen have announced they will not be releasing Brazilian playmaker Diego to take part in next month's Olympic tournament in Beijing.

Diego has now made his way to the training camp in Nordeney along with the rest of the squad.

Following clear-the-air discussions on Monday morning, the midfielder said: "I'd love to play in the Olympic tournament, of course. It's one of my dreams. But Werder don't want to release me. Klaus Allofs and Thomas Schaaf have explained the reasons why, and I will respect their decision. I'm now focussing on Werder's pre-season preparations."

Irreplaceable

Sporting Director Klaus Allofs commented, "We held talks this morning as scheduled. We outlined our position and made clear that - with a view to the legal situation as well - we won't be giving him leave to go. It didn't spark thunderous applause on his part, but it isn't the end of the world for him either. We're well aware that he's under a certain amount of pressure from the Brazilan FA and the fans, and would love to have represented his country. But we have to first and foremost take the interests of Werder and the fans here into account. Diego is one of our key players, we can't afford to do without him for several weeks."

Allofs added that he anticipates no repercussions in the wake of the decision, saying, "As things stand there is no legal basis requiring clubs to release players for the tournament. So I'm not expecting any intervention from FIFA on the matter." But he also called for the game's world governing body to issue clear legislation in order to avoid such situations arising again in the future.

Tosic staying put too

"This is a completely unnecessary process which no-one wants or needs. And all because it wasn't sorted out properly in the first place" , Allofs summarised. Another Bremen player, Dusko Tosic, is eligible to represent Serbia in Beijing. He, likewise, is not being granted permission to travel.

Yeah he has. I posted a link about an impending move a couple of days ago, but I do believe it is finalized now.

I was going to list the big transfers of the summer here, but I will just list the wikipedia site instead (and I think most of the these are accurate).

List of German transfers | Summer 2008

There has not been any big name transfers yet, but Schalke might have improved the most by picking up Engelaar and Jeffery Farfan.

I doubt that there will be any more "big name" transfers now.

Other big transfers (from a Bundesliga-Fan's point of view) have been
- Borowski to Bayern
- Owomoyela to Dortmund
- Schlaudraff to Hannover
- Zaccardo to Wolfsburg
- Helmes to Leverkusen
- Korkmaz to Frankfurt (most underrated transfer probably)
- And my favorite: Kaká to Hertha

I like the Zaccardo to Wolfsburg one. That might be a move to help them break into CL qualifying.

And how good is Schlaudraff? Impossible to tell from last season, but was he good at Aachen? Will he be able to help out Hannover?

I personally wouldn't consider him a big name, to be honest.

Potential overrated player of the year. Maybe he has some talent that Leverkusen noticed, which we haven't yet, but 15 million is too much.

Schalke 04 embarrassed themselves by losing 0-3 in a friendly match against Wuppertal (Regionalliga) last night! According to the German news articles, Wuppertal dominated the whole match, while Schalke looked like fools...
