![]() IT was something of a whirlwind introduction to life at Celtic Park, with Marc-Antoine Fortune barely having time to meet the press and go through his introductory conference before heading for the airport with his new team-mates. Come the weekend he will be on the other side of the globe, gaining an insight into the club’s worldwide support as the Hoops plays the first match of the Tony Mowbray era against Brisbane Roar on Sunday, July 12. It is for exactly this reason that the 28-year-old striker picked Celtic ahead of a number of lucrative offers from the English Premiership. That and the lure of once again working with a manager who earned his respect and admiration during their six months together at West Bromwich Albion. “Celtic is a mighty club and that’s why I have made my decision,” said Fortune. “And I have already worked with Tony Mowbray and that’s why I have moved here. “Playing under the manager last season, we spoke a lot. He told me about my positional play and he gave me the confidence that I needed to play well. “Coming here, I know that Celtic are a club whose ambition is to be champions. I have come here to be a champion.” Sitting alongside Fortune in the media room at Celtic Park, Tony Mowbray looked to be equally enthused by the player’s decision to move to Glasgow, viewing him as an important part of his plans for the future. “We are obviously delighted,” he commented, “it’s taken a few weeks. I worked with Marc from January last year in the Premier League and I am delighted to work with someone who, first of all, is a very talented football player, but also a good man, with an excellent work ethic and great technique. “He will add to the quality we already have here at Celtic Park. We are delighted that he’s here and hopefully he sees it as a positive step in his career and that we can help Marc and he can help our team be successful.” As Mowbray explained, the French Guiana-born forward’s decision to move to Celtic Park was a ‘football one’. “From my conversations with Marc and what I tried to put across last week was that he did have options,” said the Celtic manager. “From my time working with him, some players love football and as well as being a football player, Marc Fortune has a love for the game. “The biggest draw here is the history, the tradition, the number of supporters and the family atmosphere of Celtic. That is the big draw for him. “Nobody is trying to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes though and in life, finance is very important, whether that be in your job, Marc’s job or my job. “There has to be a marriage that fits and you have decisions to make and I think that Marc has made a ‘football’ decision - he feels this is the right place for him. “Were the offers tempting from the English Premier League tempting? I am sure they were, because last year I think he found that it’s a wonderful place to play football. “There are huge crowds every week and the coverage that goes with it, but here you have the history and tradition and a walk through the stadium here will take your breath away, just the size of the place. Marc has taken that opportunity.” |
