Celtic’s Europa League opponents Rapid Vienna are set to anger the club’s fans by donning the red strip they wore in a notorious Cup Winner’s Cup match at Old Trafford in 1984. The game between the two sides has gone down in history after the circumstances that led to it being played. In the second-leg match at Parkhead, Rapid player Rudolf Weinhofer faked injury when a bottle was thrown from the crowd – and the defender conned UEFA chiefs into ordering a replay. Rapid changed from the blue strip they wore at Celtic Park to all-red kit for the one-off match.

Celtic lost that decisive match 1-0 thanks to a goal by Peter Pacult, who now manages the Austrian team. Rapid haven’t worn red since that night but have confirmed that they will commemorate the fateful night when they appear at Celtic Park next Thursday.

The move is sure to anger the Celtic support but UEFA have already approved the strip change despite worries that Rapid’s decision could incite trouble.

After admitting that they had wanted to keep the change under wraps, a spokesman for the Austrian club inflamed the situation by saying they thought it was funny. The decision will be seen as disrespectful but Sharif Shoukry insists there is no intent to anger Celtic.

“We wanted to keep this secret, but yes, we are going to play in red,” he told the Daily Record.

“Our away strip for the Austrian League shows red and blue but for the Europa League and the special game in Glasgow one of the reasons we chose red was to remember 1984.

“It has helped us once and so why shouldn’t it help us again? We have a sense of humour and certainly don’t want this to be viewed badly in Scotland.”

"We had other options knocked back by UEFA so we thought it would be good to wear the all-red strip for the first time since the game in Manchester - but it's not aimed at upsetting Celtic.

Celtic have problems in attack for the Co-operative Insurance Cup third-round tie at Falkirk.
Georgios Samaras misses out again for Tony Mowbray's men after failing to recover from a shin injury he picked up against Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Europa League last week.
Marc-Antoine Fortune remains sidelined with a knee problem meaning Chris Killen will continue to partner Scott McDonald in attack.
Mowbray is expected to give a rest to the likes of Scott Brown, Shaun Maloney and Andreas Hinkel in order to give some of his fringe players a chance to impress.
Falkirk manager Eddie May hopes to have a full squad available.
Several players suffered knocks during the weekend draw with Hamilton but May will give them until the last moment to prove their fitness.
Scott Arfield may also return after a knock saw him restricted to a late introduction against the Accies.

Celtic assistant manager Mark Venus has pleaded with Scotland not to pick Scott Brown for next month's friendly in Japan if he is not 100 per cent fit.
Brown has been struggling with an ankle problem for the last few weeks and is set to see a specialist to determine the extent of the problem.
The 24-year-old is to be rested for Wednesday's Co-operative Insurance Cup game against Falkirk as Celtic look to avoid any risks with his long-term fitness.
Venus wants Scotland boss George Burley to adopt a similar policy when it comes to less important games.
"We know he's got a weakness in his ankle, an irritation in his ankle, which time and a bit of rest might help," said Venus. "So I think the kid needs a rest.
"But on one hand you rest him, and on the other hand there's talk about him going away with Scotland. Where is the dividing line? When can you rest him?
"There is a chance he could be asked to go to Japan. How do you get round that? I want to put on the record that our football club is right behind the Scotland manager.
"Whenever he needs this club for the right games, hopefully we will want to help out.
"You've got to manage your players as a nation, not just as a club. Are friendly games just to let other players have a go, to see if they can perform for their national team? Or are they to keep taking the same players with niggles and injuries?
"If he's totally fit, 100% fit, he can go. But if he's got a niggle and you play him with an injection, and you want to do that, the bottom line is I'd just bring him back if he's injured.
Understanding

"There has to be a bit of an understanding between both parties. Are we against Scotland? No, we want Scotland to win. I hope none of the players with niggles have to travel. It's time to get the players rested and look after them.
"Friendlies are a chance, like B squad games, to play other people. You might get a surprise or two from players who haven't been selected before but could come to the fore for their country."

zheng zhi arrives in paradise

David Friel
CHINA captain Zheng Zhi touched down in Glasgow on Wednesday afternoon to begin his Celtic career and immediately spoke of his pride at joining a true global football giant.

The versatile midfielder will be officially paraded as a Celtic player at a 9.30am press conference this Friday morning, September 25. He agreed to join Tony Mowbray’s side in early September and is now free to team up with the Celtic squad after being granted a work permit.

With close to 50 caps for China to his name, the 29-year-old has spent the last two seasons with Charlton Athletic and was viewed as one of the best midfielders in the English Championship.

He caught the eye of Mowbray while playing for Charlton against West Brom and the Celtic manager was delighted to land his services, after previously trying to take him to the Hawthorns.

Known as 'ZZ' back in his homeland, he is unlikely to feature in Saturday’s clash with St Mirren but will train with the Celtic squad next week in the lead-up to the first Glasgow derby of the season.

“I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time,” the new Bhoy told the official Celtic website. “The standing of Celtic means that they are viewed as one of the top sides in European football – and all over the world. The reaction to the news back in China has been unbelievable.

“When I heard that there was a chance for me to join Celtic, I jumped at it. It’s the perfect move for me at this stage of my career. I was at Charlton for a few years, but this is the perfect next step for me. I can’t wait to join up with my team-mates and start my Celtic career.”

Speaking in this week’s Celtic View, Hoops manager Mowbray said: “Zheng will be here from now on in and it’s all guns blazing from then. I don’t expect him to be involved on Saturday, but we’ll see him soon.

“There’s an international break coming up and we’ll use that to give him a sort of mini pre-season. We will give him intense work and try to get him up to speed as soon as possible.
