Default Have Ronaldo and Messi reached that level......

Do you think that Ronaldo and Messi have reached the level of football that fans of football have known Maradona and Pele for? The reason i have started this thread is because i was having a little argument with my friend today about the level of Messi and Ronaldo. Messi's best goal in my opinion was the goal against getafe i think it was, was very similar to a goal that marradona scored whilst playing for Argentina. anyone who wants to watch the video of the goals side by side can look here

YouTube - Messi VS Maradona

Ronaldo has also produced moments of magic that has left the world of football looking with envy at his ability, and this has been shown by the huge pricetag he has been given by Manchester United.

So..your opinions.

Have Ronaldo and Messi reached the level of Pele and Maradona? will they ever reach it? or if you think they have surpassed it, discuss this too

hard to say because the game isnt really the same as it was before but i think messi certainly is close if not already at that level. ronaldo has a long way to go yet, needs to do a bit of maturing which i think i saw glimpses of in the 2nd barca game because when he went to ground he would quickly get bck up and try and win it bck and he actually worked hard (for his standards) to keep the ball and win it back for us which he has never done before

No.

Not yet anyway. I'm not old enough to remember Pele but I remember Maradona and he's the best I've seen in the last twenty years without question.

Maybe in ten or fifteen years they might be but not yet, not by a long way.

nah...i mean even zidane or ronaldo wasn't considered to be as good as they were and they won every damn award there is...but if ronaldo or messi do what they did this/last season 5 more seasons and win a couple of championships for portugal/argentina and some league and champions league titles for man united/barca they might be close...

but zidane did all this but still isn't considered to be as good as maradona and pele...not far from it though...

they are not as good as zidane, zidane is not as good as them, therefore they are not as good as pele and maradona.

Domestically they are young but quite dominant.

Internationally they haven't been there yet with the exception of Portugal's finals loss to Greece last Euro's.

They both would need the next World Cup. By WC2014 Ronaldo will be almost 30.

So what you're asking is if the Italians, English, French and Brazilians think the next 3 WC's will go to Portugal and Argentina. My guess is they won't think so.

No. Back to what zzwampfen had said, Ronaldo and Zidane were the pinnacle of my generation, and they still haven't been recognized by the world as a whole to be better than Pele/Maradona.

Ronaldo will probably never be as good as Eusebio, unless he brings the small country of Portugal glory in the future (near future in Euro 200, and I doubt Messi will ever touch what Diego Maradonna did with club (Napoli) and country.

Forget potential at this point, Ronaldo and Messi aren't even close to being the best of this generation, yet best 'ever'. But Ronaldo is getting better every year, and Messi is...well he can almost play a full season, so that's porgression I guess

I think we'll make better judgment of that when Messi's 22, when C.Ronaldo started to play into the level he's at night (And yet most people still think he's inferior to little old Messi ).

As far as i'm concerned, Zidane and Ronaldo are right up there with Maradona - as for Pele, most brazilians believe Garrincha was better, Pele just more popular, so in a way was Garrincha better than Maradona?

It's all bollox, Messi has the potential to eclipse the lot of them though, the talent he has is limitless, and he's fulfulling it each and every seasons, injuries or no injuries.

sure there. I can say the same for Ronaldo, playing a full season in top league of football is a testament to being a professional and a great athlete which is the basis of any sport. But dominating, breaking records in the modern era of football is a testament to a great great player, and best in the world atm.

"but Ronaldo doesn't play against the big teams!!!" yeah, dominating the group stages of the champions league, and against french champions Lyon, and the best team in Italy at the time in Roma...

"but Ronaldo doesn't do it in the prem!!" I suppose roughing up every team in the league except Chelsea must not do it

But hey, Messi can do it? let's what happens in this second half of El Clasico, Messi boy has alot of catching up to do.

I do agree...I consider Zidane the best of all time, and Ronaldo being one of the best strikers if not the best to ever live aswell.

They could reach that level if they play a full injury free career. It will take a lot of work and deadication to be that good. They would have to play every season at 100% to get there. It is possible but unlikely and the game is quite different as well.
