Greeks Have The Hex Factor Over Rangers
Feb 10 2008 By Scott Mcdermott RANGERS have faced Greek opposition in Europe three times and the history book does not make pleasant reading for Light Blues' fans. The Ibrox men will battle it out with Panathinaikos for a place in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup this week hoping to exact revenge on Jose Peseiro's side. In 2003 Gers missed out on a UEFA Cup place after a crushing defeat to Pana saw them finish bottom of their Champions League group. Despite Michael Mols opener the Greeks responded with three cracking goals to sicken Alex McLeish's side. In the away match two months earlier Brazilian flop Emerson had given Rangers the perfect start but Pantelis Konstantinidis equalised late on to earn a point. Rangers also suffered in a crunch Champions League qualifier at the hands of AEK Athens in 1994 - a tie current boss Walter Smith won't forget in a hurry. After a miserable 2-0 defeat in the white-hot atmosphere of the Olympic Stadium, Rangers were turned over in their own backyard with AEK winning 1-0 at Ibrox. That was arguably the toughest week in Smith's first stint as manager as he lost an Old Firm game, crashed out of Europe and was dumped out of the League Cup by Falkirk within seven days. Former Ibrox defender Dave McPherson (below) remembers how tough it was over the two legs against the Greek side. He said: "I was a sub over in Athens and was then brought in for the game at Ibrox. "My abiding memory of the tie as that AEK were simply far better than us over the two legs. "In Greece it was a really intimidating atmosphere. Their fans are renowned for that. "But it wasn't any worse than an Old Firm game so I wouldn't use that as an excuse for the result. We still thought we could overturn the 2-0 defeat at home but it wasn't to be. "At that time Walter had brought in a lot of new players like Basile Boli and Duncan Ferguson and we needed more time to gel as a team." Rangers' only success against Greek opponents came in **** Advocaat's reign when the Dutchman masterminded a UEFA Cup victory over PAOK Salonika in 1998. Goals from Andrei Kanchelskis and RodWallace were enough to earn a win at Ibrox before a goalless draw in Salonika sent Gers through. Dutch full-back Arthur Numan played in both legs and said: "When you go away to play Greek opposition you know their fans will be fanatical. "That's what I remember about the PAOK game.We got a good 2-0 result at Ibrox so it was important for them in the second leg to come at us. "I remember behind one goal started singing, then the other goal, then the main stand - they definitely try to intimidate you over there. "When you drive to the stadium on the bus the fans are waiting for you and when you go on to the pitch before the game there are 2000 of them already there. "That's whey it's so important for Rangers to get a result at Ibrox before going there. "They need to get one or two goals but more importantly they must make sure they don't concede any. "If they get the right result it will make them confident for the second leg. They can be calm and organised. "It's a great chance for both teams to make the last 16 and I'm confident Rangers are good enough to go through. "As long as they don't give away stupid possession or give away free-kicks they can get a good result to take over to Greece."

If another team than Rangers or Celtic broke into the top two I think the imagine of the league outside of Scotland. Many people think that they are the only teams that matter.

I'm right though aren't I?
![]() Twelve teams in the League and only 2 of them are capable of winning it?...it all sounds a little bit farcical to me. If Celtic are 8/11 and Rangers are evens that means that according to the bookmakers Celtic have a 58% chance of winning the League and Rangers a 50% chance… …if Aberdeen are 150-1 that’s roughly less than 0.75%. And you still think the Scottish Premier League is interesting eh? Without Rangers and Celtic, the odds for the Scottish Premiership would look something like this: Dundee United 7/2 Aberdeen 9/2 Hearts 9/2 Hibs 9/2 Motherwell 5/1 Falkirk 22/1 Kilmarnock 28/1 Inverness 50/1 Hamilton 100/1 St Mirren 100/1 Far more interesting and unpredictable I’m sure you’ll agree.

well the league is only 2 days old and already a ref decision is in the spotlight again. ref Eddie Smith (the same guy who awarded celtic a free kick against st mirran last year for a dive) awarded a penalty to celtic for Will Haining holding back Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink when the striker was through on goal. but replays showed that it was infact hesselink who was holding hainings shirt and after the striker took a shot and missed he fell to the ground and was awarded a penalty. Haining was then sent off. if that wasnt bad enough replays also showed hesselink was offside when the ball was played so he shouldnt of even had the chance to get a shot on goal.

The standard of the football is superb but it ends there. It’s overpriced, the atmosphere at stadiums is terrible, and it’s predictable. The English Premiership is starting to go down the same path as the Scottish Premier League, the only difference is that English stadiums are still pretty full up (for the time being). But come on, you’ve got to admit it would be more exciting if the title race went down to the wire between two different teams for a change?
