HYYPIA AGREES NEW CONTRACT
Jimmy Rice 05 April 2008 Sami Hyypia has today agreed a deal to stay at Anfield until the summer of 2009. The 34-year-old, whose contract was due to expire at the end of the season, is now set to join a select band of players to stay at the club for a decade. Hyypia told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I am very happy to have agreed a new deal. This is a great club with fantastic supporters, so I'm delighted." The former skipper has so far made 440 appearances since arriving on Merseyside from Willem II back in 1999. Boss Rafa Benitez expects that number to keep rising next season and claims Hyypia is the best possible role model for young defenders such as Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger. "This is great news for the club," said the Spaniard. "Sami has a lot to offer. He is a fantastic professional who is an example to all young footballers. He understands the game and is clever. All these things mean he can help other players. "He has shown this year how important he is to us on the pitch and he can continue to do that next season." Signed by Gerard Houllier for a bargain £2.5million, Hyypia was a key part of the 2001 treble-winning side after forming a rock-solid partnership with Stephane Henchoz. He was one of the stand-out performers on the road to Champions League glory in Istanbul, scoring a cool volley which proved crucial in the quarter-final defeat of Juventus. Incredibly, the centre-back played every minute of 57 consecutive European games for the Reds from November 2001 to February 2006. History will undoubtedly judge Hyypia to be one of the club's shrewdest pieces of business. His collection of winner's medals is now in double figures and in 2006 fans voted him 38th in Liverpoolfc.tv's 100 Players Who Shook The Kop series. He is also a legend in his homeland having amassed 90 caps and won Finnish Player of the Year six times. |

Now that was an exciting game, much better than the one a couple of days ago. It's always great to see substitutes and reserve players playing big games, they always try so hard to impress the coach.

LFC Rumour mill: Rafinha in, battle for Bentley, Kewell and Parry to exit?
Apr 6 2008 SCHALKE DEFENDER Rafinha is "almost certain" to move to Anfield in the summer, it has been claimed. Various newspapers say Rafa Benitez has agreed to pay £6million for the player. It is reported that Benitez has scouted the Brazilian for most of the season and plans to land the right-sided defender to solve problems his squad has in this area. (various) Benitez has said he plans to sign three players over the summer. * * * LIVERPOOL face a battle with Tottenham if they intend to act on their much-rumoured interest in Blackburn's David Bentley. Bentley, 23, is thought to want to leave Ewood Park in the summer in search of a bigger club in order to boost his England prospects and it is believed White Hart Lane is now his most likely destination. Web reports, and the Sunday Express say that although manager Mark Hughes has said recently that he expects Bentley to stay at Rovers it is thought that the lure of a return to London could prove too much for the young midfielder. With David Beckham recently returned to the England squad, it is also thought that Bentley now believes he must leave Ewood Park if he wants to gain a regular place in the England side under Fabio Capello and Tottenham fits the bill perfectly. Liverpool have also apparently shown an interest in Bentley as a possible replacement for Jermaine Pennant, who has had little impact at Anfield this season, with a fee thought to be in the region of £10 million. However, it may be that Bentley would prefer to return to the capital and Juande Ramos has been promised funds to boost his squad in an attempt to break into the ‘Top Four’ and bring Champions League football to White Hart Lane. * * * Harry Kewell's future lies in ... Sunderland. According to Sunday newspapers, out-of-favour Kewell is highly thought of by Roy Keane. Keane has cash to splash if Sunderland, as is expected, remain in the Premier League. And according to reports, a contract is already being drawn up. * * * PERHAPS unsurpisingly, it has been reported that Tom Hicks is less than impressed with Liverpool FC chief executive Rick Parry. According to Sunday newspaper reports, Hicks now wants his own man in to run Liverpool FC - once he has managed to buy out George Gillett. Last weekend, Parry used a BBC interview to say that something needed to be done to sort out the stand-off between Gillett and Hicks. Hicks, claim reports, now wants his own team to run Liverpool on a day-to-day basis. Other reports claims Hicks has now put an SOS out to the City to help find a financial backer who can help him cling on to Liverpool. From The Times
April 7, 2008 Peter Crouch ready to fly from Anfield Peter Crouch has given the strongest indication that he is planning to leave Liverpool at the end of the season. The England striker has been offered an extension to his contract, which has one year to run, but is reluctant to sign because Rafael BenÍtez cannot guarantee him first-team football. Crouch has been a peripheral figure at Anfield this season, making his first Barclays Premier League start in more than two months in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal, and is ready to move on in search of more regular appearances. Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have expressed interest and Portsmouth, his former club, could join the race for his signature, with Liverpool prepared to sell rather than risk losing him for nothing in 12 months’ time. “I’d love to stay, it’s a fantastic club and I love everything about it, but I’ve got to be realistic,” Crouch said. “If I want to have any aspirations of playing for England or furthering my career, then I have to be playing. And that doesn’t seem to be the case at the moment. It can be disheartening and I’ll have to look at it. What I will do, when called upon towards the end of this season, is give my best and then look at it in the summer.” Crouch gave Liverpool the lead at the Emirates Stadium with a well-taken goal and created chances missed by John Arne Riise and Andriy Voronin, but the striker acknowledged that he has no chance of keeping his place for tomorrow’s Champions League quarter-final, second leg against Arsenal at Anfield. “It’s pretty clear I probably won’t start on Tuesday, to be honest,” Crouch, 27, said. “I think obviously if the manager plays one up front he’s more than likely to go with Fernando [Torres] and rightly so, he’s been fantastic this season. But for me, I have to work hard in training and, when given the opportunity, I have to do as well as I can.” BenÍtez has not given up hope of convincing Crouch to stay, even if his opportunities are likely to be limited. The Spaniard insisted that his team would not be practising penalties before Arsenal’s visit, even if a shoot-out seems the most likely outcome after three 1-1 draws between the teams this season. “Peter Crouch is a very good professional,” BenÍtez said. “That is the reason why we offered him a new contract and I have confidence he will sign. I do not believe too much in practising penalties. I believe sometimes it is more the heart than the quality of the players. You know which players will be good when they are called from the halfway line. It is not just quality. It is to be calm and to know what to do.” Peter Crouch ready to fly from Anfield | Premier League - Times Online |

Finnan is getting a bit old, so when he retires there is always Arbeloa as a good back up for Rafinhia.
Why is Crouch leaving? He is a great player, if only Rafa can get that through his thick head he might just realise that Crouch will be great alongside Torres.

Finnan's too good to be a replacement, unless he's used often I can see him becoming unrested, he's been in the starting XI for so long.
On Crouch. You'd be a bit upset aswell... He has an international career to consider, and playing second fiddle to Torres and Kuyt would become extremely frustrating. If we sign another Striker he'll be out.

Well, Kuyt has done a lot for the team and has worked really hard, but I think Crouch is much better player. You do have a point about his career, I just hope Rafa realises the talent he has been wasting on the bench.

Ok maybe not, however he isn't exactly a bad player is he? If he went to a club like Sunderland or Bolton he'd be welcomed.
Don;t say you wouldn't welcome him I'll stay you in the eye.
