UEFA TIP YOUNG RED FOR STARDOM

UEFA have named Academy ace Christopher Buchtmann as one of their top 10 stars of the future.

The left-back, who turned 17 last month, was one of the standout performers as Germany clinched the European U17 Championship on Monday.

Buchtmann has also impressed in helping Liverpool Under-18s reach the FA Youth Cup final.

KELLY ON ENGLAND DUTY TONIGHT

Martin Kelly is expected to feature for England Under-19s when they take Bosnia and Herzegovina at Doncaster Rovers FC's Keepmoat Stadium tonight.
The Reds centre back is in Brian Eastick's squad for the European Championship qualifiers.

England also take on Slovakia at Bradford City FC's Valley Parade on Friday, May 29, followed by a clash with Scotland at Sheffield United's Bramall Lane on Monday, June 1.

All kick-off at 7pm BST.

Eastick's team know that if they finish top of their group then they will progress to the competition finals in Ukraine in July.

Fernando Torres has been named the Liverpool Echo Merseyside Sports Personality of the Year for the calendar year of 2008.



El Nino succeeeds fellow Spaniard Mikel Arteta of Everton to win this accolade, and regards the award as a great personal honour.

"I know that Mikel won it last year because when I have been to his house I have seen the big trophy in his living room," he said.

"Now I am going to take the trophy to my own house and I hope to be able to win it again in the future because that would mean a lot to me.

"It is a privilege for me to receive this trophy because I know that it is a very important award for the people of this city and for the fans.

"When you look at the list of previous winners it is really special to have my name alongside theirs because everyone knows what people like Kenny Dalglish, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher mean to this club and to this city.

"They have all won it before me so to win such a special award after just two years at Liverpool and to be in the thoughts of many people gives me a really special feeling.

"It is always nice to win awards but the most important prizes of all in football are always team trophies.

"I came to Liverpool to win trophies and going two seasons without winning any is a long time for a club like Liverpool.

"The next one needs to be coming soon because we want to win for ourselves, for the club and for the fans.

"For me the team has improved over the last year and we are much closer to United than we were.

"We managed to get more points than any other Liverpool team since the Premier League began and I don't think there is any question that the team is improving and the club is improving.

"Now hopefully we will be able to keep the good players that we have here and also make some good signings in the summer because that would be fantastic for us."

Torres struck his 50th Liverpool goal against Tottenham on Sunday and admitted it was a great feeling.

"It is not easy to score 50 goals, especially when you are just in your second season at a club so I am very proud that I have done this," he said.

"But it is thanks to my team mates I have done this because they create my chances and support me every week.

"Now I want to keep scoring. I have my first 50 and this makes me really happy but now I want the next 50.

"The main thing for me now is to forget the injuries and then if I can play every game in the next season it will be even better for me."

Martin Skrtel hopes he can take over Sami Hyypia's mantle of goalscoring centre-back in the coming years - even though he has yet to break his Liverpool duck.

The Slovakia international has scored five goals for his country but has yet to find the net in 50 Liverpool appearances.

"I haven't scored but I hope to change this," Skrtel told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"For me the first job is to protect our own goal. Any goals I score is something extra. But I hope next season I can get some goals."

Meanwhile, Skrtel admits he was disappointed at news Hyypia will leave for Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

"For me, I'll miss Sami because he is a big person and a big player," said the No.37. "He has helped me a lot. Whenever I've needed something I could go to Sami and ask him. He'd always help me.

"But now he's finished here after 10 years - like I say he'll be missed.

"He is a very good player. To play here for 10 years is incredible. Before I came here I could see on television how good he was. I already knew he was a really good player with quality. He still is now.

"I wish him all the best at his next club."

This one will happen. Benitez needs a right back desperately, and those who have been privy to Rafa's press conferences know that he is desperate to sign English. Johnson is one of only two or three English players Benitez deems good enough for his squad, prepare to see him bid high to get his man.
Altenatives: Dario Srna (Shakhtar Donetsk), Miguel (Valencia)

Centre Midfield - Fernando (Porto):
Rafa Benitez has formed arguably the best central spine in the country with the triumvirate of Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano and Steven Gerrard. The problem is: What happens when one cannot play? Lucas is young and developing, but right now he clearly is not good enough for a title challenge. Fernando of Porto is one of the best holding midfielders in Europe, he is superb at breaking attacks down and filling the holes like Dietmar Hamann used to do. Can also pick a pass, making him a good partner to either Alonso or Mascherano.
Alternative: Antonio Apono (Malaga), Jurado (Atletico Madrid)

Wide Midfield - Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli):
This guy is good. Sometimes you see bandwagon reporting when journalists recommend a player purely because his agent has admitted the club have made an approach. This is not the case here. Previously the wearer of the number seven jersey for Argentina Under-21s, Lavezzi has all the traits of the previous greats to have donned the same number. Can play anywhere along the attack, allowing Benitez to rotate Riera, Kuyt and Benayoun. Put it this way, if Napoli lose him, there will be a public outcry from the fans.
Alternative: David Silva (Valencia), Arjen Robben (Real Madrid), Cristian Rodriguez (Porto), Giovinco (Juventus), Willian (Shakhtar Donetsk), Juan Mata (Valencia)

Striker – Fernando Llorente (Athletic Bilbao):
Liverpool do not need a first choice striker. When everybody is fit Gerrard will play behind Torres - hence spending £20+ million on Carlos Tevez is a ludicrous idea. What Liverpool do need is a back-up option to Torres, a man capable of leading the line if El Nino is injured, and a man who can change Liverpool's attack if they need a goal. Fernando Llorente is big, strong, superb in the air, has a good touch, and has the mobility that Peter Crouch lacked. His goal record for Bilbao in La Liga this season is 13 in 33, which is a very similar to Torres's 14-goal tally in the year before he moved to Anfield.

he needs discipline, i no him in real life, and i'm not going to lie im not such a big fan of him.

But i think he does have a lot of talent, great vision and great passing. He's also a good tackler and tries to get the ball back whenever he loses it. He's also a great dribbler.

He plays on the right or left (usually on the left).

I've heard Liverpool are also asking for Mehmet Topal from us (plays as CM)

He's 23 years old and IMO just as good as Arda, if not better. You can also probably get him for half the price.

I read a great poem a while back which I think someone on RAWK wrote. I was going to post it if we won the league but I'll post it anyway.

A Psychiatric Hospital

Liverpool FC today confirmed reserves manager Gary Ablett will leave the club at the end of this month. Ablett will depart after the International Cor Groenewegen Tournament in Holland this weekend.

The former Reds defender took up the position in 2006 after moving from Merseyside rivals Everton.

Everyone at Liverpool would like to thank Gary for his hard work over the past three years and wish him all the best for the future.

I heard this a few days ago. Shame to lose him. There will probably be a few more following him.

Edit: Hughie McAuley and Dave Shannon are gone aswell. Sad to see these people go after being part of us for so long.
