MASCH: I WON'T GO GOAL CRAZY
Paul Hassall 17 March 2008 Javier Mascherano has spoken of the joy he felt at finally breaking his duck for Liverpool - but has warned Reds supporters not to expect him to embark upon a sudden hot-streak in front of goal. The diminutive midfielder marked yet another impressive display in the 2-1 win over Reading with a sensational equaliser in front of the Kop end.

It set Rafael Benitez's men on the road to an important home victory and, he admits, the sheer jubilation he felt on finally hitting the back of the net got the better of him as he went wild with celebration.

"It was an incredible moment," he said.

"I have not scored a goal since I was at River Plate, so to score one for Liverpool - and in front of the Kop as well - was really special.

"I can't really describe the feeling but I know I celebrated like I had gone crazy.

"Some of the lads in the dressing room said I was like Inzaghi in the Champions League final.

"It just meant so much to me and it was important also for the team because we had just gone a goal behind."

The Argentina international's 23-yard drive proved to be the catalyst that saw the Reds go on to record a seventh straight win and while boss Rafa Benitez suggested it could for the first of many for the midfielder, Mascherano insists he will put the good of the team ahead of any personal glory in the goal charts.

"I think the manager was joking," he laughed.

"It would be nice to score more goals but I don't think there are many holding midfielders who score lots of goals.

"In this position you have to play deep and try to keep the balance of the team and that is the most important thing for me.

"I will try to score more goals but I know that I have to do my own job first."

Mascherano's teammates were also pleased to see him finally net a goal for the club and Fabio Aurelio - who also got off the mark in a red shirt in the recent 3-1 win over Bolton - believes it was much-deserved following a series of top performances this season.

"Javier has been having a great season," he said.

"He's been working really well for the team and I think he deserved to have a great moment like the one on Saturday. Everyone was happy for him."

AUSSIE REDS TOP THE CHARTS
Paul Hassall 18 March 2008

Bill Shankly's famous quote that "first is first and second is nowhere" couldn't have been more apt for Aussie band Gyroscope earlier this week.
The Liverpool-mad group's latest release made it to number one in the album charts Down Under to cap a seven day period that was almost as good as the one Rafael Benitez and his side have just enjoyed.

The band, pictured above alongside producer Dave Erring (known for working with Manic Street Preachers and Idlewild), were in Liverpool recently to record in Elevator Studios and have had instant success with their third album 'Breed Obsession' after it was released last Monday.

Gyroscope, which comprises members Brad, Rob, Daniel and Zoran, have just returned to their home city of Perth following a three month stay on Merseyside and will no doubt be back in the near future, hoping to cheer the Reds towards some success that is similar to their own.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez halalalala out at the latest batch of international friendlies as this season approaches its climax.
Benitez has been left frustrated at the prospect of influential midfielder Javier Mascherano making a return trip to Africa ahead of the crucial Merseyside derby with Everton on 30th March.
Mascherano, who opened his Liverpool goalscoring account against Reading at the weekend, is set to fly to Cairo after the clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday to represent Argentina in a friendly with Egypt the following Wednesday.
And Benitez has been angered by the news that he will lose £18million signing Mascherano as he prepares his squad for the crucial meeting with local and fourth place Premier League rivals Everton.
When asked about losing Mascherano, Benitez ironically told the Daily Express: "I'm really, really happy that Mascherano will go to Egypt to play a friendly.
"These are things that you can't understand. Rules are rules so the players must go.
"It's the same problem for all the top sides. Normally the best players are in the top sides and they are playing UEFA Champions League or playing for the title.
"We have spoken about this a hundred times before.
"You can't speak to the coach. You can say, 'be careful', but they are thinking about themselves.
"They need to check the players to see if they can manage with the team, so it will be very difficult.
"That, for me, is the reason that the squad is important, especially at this stage of the season. You need a good squad to use the players properly - sometimes you can and sometimes you can't."
United and Argentina striker Carlos Tevez will not be forced to make the trip to Egypt as he has been omitted from the international squad by coach Alfio Basile because he is suspended for the next World Cup qualifier against Ecuador in June.

Friendlies are pointless and we could lose one of our biggest players for a crucial game

Yeah true. But there is a need for international friendlies and qualifiers. there are so many of them so there is some at the start of the season, some mid season and some at the climax of the season. Managers just have to deal with it. Internationals is just as important as Domestic competitions. for the mascherano case without international matches he would be able to showcase his abilities. thats how most lesser or younger players from outside of europe show their abilities by player for their "lesser" countries and doing well. For australia so many players got a european contract after performing at the world cup or even just qualifying for it

Masch is a big loss. Time for Lucas to shine!

That's presuming that Masch doesn't make the Everton match.

The Reds head to Old Trafford this weekend on the back of seven straight victories which have seen them strengthen their hold on fourth place in the Barclays Premier League as well as qualify for the quarter finals of the Champions League.

With the Merseyside derby taking place the following week before the triple header with Arsenal gets underway, Riise knows the Reds' destiny this season is likely to be decided over the next five matches.

"These next couple of weeks are going to be unbelievable," he told Liverpoolfc.tv. "We are playing top games against top teams but we are looking strong at the moment and so we can't wait for the matches to come around.

"This is the sort of run of games you train for and work towards during the season. There's still a lot to play for for us as we look to secure fourth place and keep going in the Champions League. That's our one chance to win a trophy this season and we want to take it.

"The disappointing thing from our point of view is that we should have been fighting for the title. You won't believe how disappointed we are with some of the points we have thrown away this season, especially at home. We've closed the gap on the top teams of late but we still need three teams to mess up if we're going to get back into the title race. For now I think we have to look to finish fourth and that's why the derby next weekend is going to be so crucial."

Liverpool will take on United this weekend looking to avenge their cruel defeat at the hands of Alex Ferguson's men earlier in the season when Carlos Tevez netted the only goal of the game.

Despite United sitting above Liverpool in the league table, Riise insists there are a couple of special reasons why the Red Devils should be wary on Sunday afternoon.

"Gerrard and Torres have a partnership like I've never seen before," he added. "The two of them are in unbelievable form at the moment, both looking strong and both scoring goals.

"I wouldn't say I'm surprised with the way Torres is playing because we knew he was a top striker, but sometimes it can take a while to settle in English football. He hasn't needed time at all. I know for a fact that defenders hate to play against him because he's so quick and so strong.

"United will definitely be worried about us because we're the form side at the moment, but at the same time we have to respect them because they are a top side also."

And asked why Liverpool have suddenly hit a rich vein of winning form over recent weeks, Riise is in no doubts where the credit should be directed.

"It's down to the manager and his rotation," he said. "Because he changed the team around earlier in the season we're now seeing the rewards of that.

"When you have so many competitions to play in it's important to rotate and that's why the manager did it. He cares about the players.

"Now we don't have as many competitions to go for, that's why you're seeing virtually the same players and the same system from game to game."

The Brazilian midfielder has made over 20 appearances for the Reds since arriving from Gremio in the summer and he is convinced he would not have made such an impact had Benitez not looked to rest the likes of Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano.

"Gerrard is undoubtedly the face of Liverpool Football Club, possibly the face of English football," said Lucas.

"But we can play together and have already done so to good effect. The manager, Rafa Benitez, has a philosophy whereby he likes to rotate, sometimes four players from game to game. And this has worked to my advantage."

For many newcomers to the Barlcays Premier League, the first season can so often be one of transition, as they come to terms with the pace and style of the football.

It is something Lucas feels he has also had to come to terms with, but he is now happy with his new life on Merseyside.

"I must admit I suffered a bit when I first came to England," sais Lucas.

"But then I realised that there was nothing to be intimidated by, everybody had two legs, we were all equal.

"I managed to get over this when I realized what I had already achieved. I had done big things like being selected for Brazil. Now, I have settled in and everyone has treated me well since I arrived."

BUT theres nothing more annoying than seeing your team lose an important player through injury or not being able to make it back in time for an important match. perfect example torres goes for an international game against france, gets injured and misses the chelsea game. Babel came back injured on the same occasion. If it was less important games i dnt think people would care so much but it always seems to be scheduled before big games.

Man UTD vs Liverpool

Ferdinand might not be able to play for Manchester because of a back injury, good news for Liverpool

I think Van Der Sar is injured, so he and Ferdinand might not be able to play. Without them we have a better chance of beating Man Utd. with Torres and Gerrard. So, what do you think the line-up will be? I think apart from Agger, the whole squad is fit, so here is my line-up:

------------------------------------Torres----------------------------------
---------------Crouch/Babel--------------------------Kuyt/Voronin----------
-----------------------------------Gerrard----------------------------------
-------------------------Alonso----------------Masch-----------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------Riise-------------Skrtel----------------Carra-------------Finnan------
-----------------------------------Reina-------------------------------------

Subs:
Hyypia
Lucas
Pennant
Crouch/Babel
Voronin/Kuyt
