Rafael Benitez doesn't mind who Liverpool draw in the last eight of the Champions League after their victory over Inter Milan - but admitted he'd relish an all-English final.
Fernando Torres scored the only goal as Liverpool beat Serie A leaders Inter in their own back yard to ensure Benitez's side became the fourth English team in the last eight of the Champions League. The on-form Spanish striker took advantage of the extra space afforded to him by Nicolas Burdisso's 50th-minute sending off to make it 1-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate. It sent the Reds into the quarter-final draw alongside Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea. It marks the first time four English sides have ever made it to that stage at the same time and the Spaniard believes it serves as a timely reminder of "the power of the Premier League". Inter coach Mancini dropped a bombshell of his own by announcing as he left the media conference "this will be my last two months at Inter" but the headlines belong to Liverpool and Torres after another memorable European night for the club. Looking forward to the draw for the last eight, Benitez said: "I do not have any preference now who we play next, but I would be more than happy to face an English side in the final. "This victory shows the power and strength of the Premier League. We have fine clubs who are among the best in Europe, a league that is the same and players of quality who are some of the best in Europe." Benitez won the tactical battle comfortably over two legs and said: "The two goals we scored in the first leg were crucial, and then when they had a man sent off it is always easier to play against 10 men than 11. "The key for us was to be compact in the first half when they were attacking, and to be sure that we hit them on the counter-attack. "This is the third time we have got to this stage while I have been at Anfield. The first season nobody talked of us winning the Champions League, but we did it. "Now we have a much better squad and experience and I have great confidence in my team to play in big games." Following Mancini's revelation Benitez, whose future at Anfield has been under scrutiny this season, was asked how he would react to a summer approach from Inter owner Massimo Moratti. But he quickly rebuffed the suggestion. "I am happy at Liverpool and only concerned about my team and our progress. I am more than happy at Anfield," he said. Mancini, meanwhile, questioned the red card for Burdisso, a decision which changed the nature of the tie. He said: "I was disappointed with the refereeing. People must be punished the same way, and tackles dealt with the same way. But four times in the first half players went through the back of my team and were not penalised. "Playing with 10 men for the second match in the tie was always going to be tough against a side like Liverpool. "Liverpool are a very strong side and can do well in this tournament. I believe Arsenal, too, can win it." |

Q&A with Jose Reina
Is there anything you do to motivate yourself before games? Stacey, Leicester We all listen to music in the dressing room, to tunes that most of us like, more for relaxation than motivation. I have superstitions too. I repeat them before each match so that, at least mentally, I'm totally prepared. I do a lot of motivation work. I try to focus as much as possible. Which striker do you hate playing against? Chris, Coventry Didier Drogba is the best I have come up against. He is a very complete player with incredible strength. Another player who's always scored a lot of goals against me is Fernando Torres! It's a good job he's playing for my side now and scoring against other keepers! Torres is fantastic. He's proving that at Liverpool. How does Gerrard compare to the Spanish central midfielders you've played with or against? Jim, Newton-le-Willows Steve Gerrard is simply one of the best five footballers in the world. I have played with some great midfielders, but he is the most complete central midfielder in the world. He's a hard worker and a quality player. He's a leader on the pitch and can decide a game on his own. What tips would you give a keeper about to go into a penalty shootout? Anon It's vital to be armed with lots of information about how the penalty specialists in each team take their penalties. When they're shooting, you must wait until the last moment. It's important to have the security of knowing you are going to guess where the ball will go and you are going to save it. Conviction! That's the key. Why do you think Liverpool have problems in the Premier League, but in Europe we are a difficult side to beat? Nathan, Devon In England it's harder to win games by simply being tactically astute. The physical aspect plays an important part in Premier League games. In the Champions League, Liverpool can beat any team. And we are going to go far in the Champions League again. What were your first impressions on joining a great club like Liverpool? Anees, Sheffield I was happy and full of hope. When you live the experience of what it means to be a player for Liverpool FC you realise how lucky you are, because many people would love to be in your place. It is a great privilege to play for Liverpool. Playing every game at Anfield is an incredible thing. Can Liverpool be contenders for the Premier League title in your time at the club? Clive, NG31 I hope next year we can work hard to at last win the Premier League. It's our number one objective. To get there we must be more consistent and have world-class players (or at least more of them) in the squad. A lot is being done to bring in top signings, but we need an even greater push. Rumours persist that you could be on your way back to Spain this summer. Is there any truth in it or are you happy with Liverpool? Gary, Ireland I'm really happy at Liverpool. As I said, it's amazing to be playing for one of the greatest teams in the World. I want to stick around at Liverpool for a few years yet. What's the best save you've made? Pete One save stays with me, which was from Roberto Carlos at the Bernabeu. It was a Real Madrid-Villarreal game, which finished 1-1. The save came in the last minute. Roberto Carlolalalala a direct free-kick, one of his specials, and I managed to save it. Who is your idol? Who do you think is a good role model for youngsters now? Anon My idol was Andoni Zubizarreta, who played for Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona, Valencia and Spain. Later on it was Jose Molina who played for Atletico Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna. Right now I think the best keepers are Petr Cech, Iker Casillas and Gianluigi Buffon, in no particular order. |

TONIGHT'S RESERVE GAME CALLED OFF
Paul Eaton 12 March 2008 ![]() Liverpool's scheduled reserve clash against Manchester City tonight has been called off. A waterlogged pitch at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and high winds in the north west has led to the postponement of the fixture. No new date has yet been set for the game. MASCHERANO REFLECTS ON BRILLIANT NIGHT Paul Eaton 12 March 2008 Javier Mascherano today reflected on Liverpool's latest epic European triumph and declared: "It doesn't matter who we get in the next round." The Reds made sure of their place in the last eight of the competition after a 1-0 victory in the San Siro sealed a 3-0 aggregate success, and Mascherano - Liverpool's best player on the night - believes that after knocking the Italian champions out there is nothing to fear in the rest of the tournament. "It was a very good result for the team and it is one of the best. It was amazing for the players, for the supporters and for everyone at the club," he said. "Now we want to progress in this competition. We are playing well and confidence is high so we have to keep up our form. "It doesn't matter who we get next. It will be a difficult game for us but it will also be a difficult game for them. After a result like this we have to believe that we can go further in the competition. "It is all about working really hard for one another and playing as a team. That is the only way you can get results like we have had against teams like Barcelona and Inter Milan. Liverpool is one of the best clubs in the world so we have to prove this on the pitch. "The history of the club is so special, everyone around the world knows the history and we have a very good record in Europe. We are just doing our best to try and create more history." Mascherano was also keen to pay tribute to the vast army of travelling Kopites who made themselves heard in the San Siro. "We know that the Liverpool fans are the best in the world," he added. "They really are amazing. "I don't know how many thousands of Inter Milan fans there were in the stadium but we could still hear the Liverpool fans supporting us and singing their songs. "It is very important for us because it helps us to know that our fans are with us and I would like to thank them for their support." |
