Bruce hopes to keep Heskey
Wigan boss hopes striker's ambitions can be satisfied at JJB Steve Bruce insists he has not given up hope of persuading Emile Heskey to sign a new contract at Wigan Athletic. Heskey's current deal expires at the end of the season and he has put a decision on his future at the JJB Stadium on the back-burner. He has been linked with former club Liverpool, along with Aston Villa, after admitting he would relish the chance to play UEFA Champions League football again. However, after re-establishing himself as a starter in the England team, Wigan boss Bruce hopes that Heskey will see the sense in signing a new deal. Talisman "We all know that he is out of contract at the end of the season, but he doesn't owe this club, in my opinion, a penny because he's justified why he's been here," said Bruce on Sky Sports News. "He's been a talisman. Before I came here, when they beat Sheffield United in that game (on the final day of the 2006/07 season), in particular, I was watching from afar and Emile Heskey gave an unbelievable performance and almost single-handedly kept the club in the Premier League. "He doesn't owe the club anything, but we still hope, and I'm not giving up hope, that we can persuade him (to stay). "He's well liked and respected here. He plays every week to his strengths and I've not given up hope because you hear all these reports that he's going to clear off, but we'll try our best to try and keep him if we can." Bruce accepts Heskey has the right to decide his future, but feels the 30-year-old's prospects of playing at the 2010 World Cup could be best served by staying at Wigan. Wigan striker Emile Heskey would welcome a return to Liverpool if the Reds make a move for him.
Recent speculation has linked England international Heskey, who spent four years at Anfield between 2000 and 2004 under former manager Gerard Houllier, with a January move back to Merseyside. The 30-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and has yet to indicate a desire to sign a new deal at the JJB Stadium, which has alerted a number of clubs to a possible cut-price transfer in the New Year window. And Heskey - who played a pivotal role in helping Liverpool secure a famous knock-out cup treble in 2001 - has now admitted that he would relish a working reunion with the likes of Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. "When you are performing well speculation will come around," Heskey told Radio Five Live. Options "A move to Liverpool would be lovely. Who knows what will happen. Let's see how it goes. "Everyone wants to play in Europe at the highest level. "Everyone knows that I'm in the last year of my contract so speculation is bound to happen. You just have to take it with a pinch of salt and carry on playing. "I am just going to keep my options open and give my all for Wigan. In my position I can afford to do that. "I've been putting in some good performances and people appreciate that." Wigan travel to Anfield on Saturday where Heskey will be charged with the task of ending Liverpool's unbeaten start to the season. |

Heskey open to Liverpool return
Heskey has scored five goals in 50 appearances for England England striker Emile Heskey has responded to reports of a January move to Liverpool by saying it would be "lovely" to re-sign for his old club. Heskey, whose contract with Wigan expires next summer, has experienced a resurgence in form this season. The 30-year-old told BBC Radio 5 Live that he is "keeping my options open". When asked about a return to Liverpool, for whom he made 150 appearances from 2000 to 2004, he said: "It would be lovely. We'll see how it goes." The former Leicester City striker has become a permanent fixture in Fabio Capello's England team, receiving plaudits from team-mates and fans alike for his performances during England recent victories over Kazakhstan and Belarus. The forward's form led to him saying this week that he has a desire to play Champions League football. And his international revival has reportedly sparked interest from Liverpool and a number of other Premier League clubs. "When you're performing well, speculation is going to come around," added Heskey, who is doubtful for Wigan's Premier League match against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday having returned from international duty with an injury. It's great that we've got an England centre-forward playing for Wigan. Of course, the 'paper speculation now is that he's leaving us - that's the downside of it Steve Bruce "Everyone knows I'm in my last year of my contract so you've just got to take everything with a pinch of salt and carry on playing. "I'm going to keep my options open and give 110% for Wigan and see how it goes and maybe sit down with them." With a scoring rate of roughly one in every five games for Leicester, Liverpool, Birmingham and now Wigan, the forward has been derided in the past for his lack of potency in front of goal. But since returning from three years in the international wilderness last year Heskey's combative and selfless style have won over many of his critics, even if his goalscoring rate has not improved. Wigan manager Steve Bruce said Heskey was benefitting from experience and improved fitness levels. "It's quite staggering what's happened to him over the last few weeks, and I think a lot of it's got to come down to the condition that Emile's got himself in," said Bruce. "He's possibly in the best condition he's been in all his life; he's obviously enjoying his football and he's reaping the rewards of it. I doubt he'll be in the England squad warming the bench at Liverpool LAValencia "It would be wrong for me to take the plaudits. He's got to a stage where you know how to look after yourself - I think (Wigan captain) Mario Melchiot is the same, and certainly I was when I got to 31. "His physical condition is magnificent. He's been like that for a good while but not been tip-top like he is right now." Bruce added: "The kid's been a kicking block for years - but to have the mental strength to come through it and play his part is fantastic for him and a club like ours, who have played a big part in his rehabilitation. "It's great that we've got an England centre-forward playing for Wigan. Of course, the 'paper speculation now is that he's leaving us - that's the downside of it - but everybody involved with the club is delighted for him." http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...em/7676694.stm |

I'd go spare. Besides, thought you lot weren't his biggest fans after the Reina incident. I'd have him back in a flash, injury prone tart but on his day he's in the same class as Messi and Ronaldo, don't see him moving to Liverpool at all though, bet their fans wouldn't be best pleased if he left either, especially after Robinho left.

I think Robben would be a fantastic signing for us, only if he could remain healthy. But i think the only reason we'd have a chance at getting him is his incredible ability to pick up injuries.
Lets face it, if robben were healthy all the time, he might be one of the best players in the world. If we could get him, and he could stay fit, then it could make our season. |

He's the modern day Darren Anderton, when he plays, you'd be hard pressed to find a better left winger, but even in Spain he's having injury problems. He's the sort that'll get them from one mistimed tackle.
Always thought Liverpool lacked it most down the wings, think they'd become genuine title contenders if they did get him, and IMO, they should be playing Babel every game right now. |

I think if Babel wanted to try the right wing, then we could have some serious attacking going on. But Rafa loves Kuyt, so it just wont happen. |
