Daniel Agger has spoken of his determination to re-establish himself in the Liverpool XI following Martin Skrtel's knee injury – but admitted his chance had come in the worst possible circumstances.
The Denmark international has started just two games this season, but despite his eagerness to play, he was gutted to see his close friend and roommate stretchered off against Man City. Now, as the Reds wait on today's scan to hear how long Skrtel will be out, Agger is looking to leave sentiment behind and grab any chances that come his way. "Of course I hope to get some playing time, but this was not exactly the way I wished to get it. I know Martin very well because I share a room with him when we travel," said Agger. "I hope to get my chance and then I will prove that it's my place. On the other hand, it might as well be Jamie Carragher's place because I don't know why people only say it is me or Skrtel who are fighting each other for a place in the team." Rafa Benitez last week responded to speculation about Agger's future by insisting the defender was not for sale. The man himself is equally as determined to stay put. "I have had to be patient this season and wait for my chance, I know how things are," said Agger. "The team have been playing really well and the results have been great, so I couldn't really expect the manager to make too many changes. "The only thing for me to do was get my head down and concentrate on getting as fit as possible, so that if an opportunity came along, I was ready to take it." Agger missed almost all of last season with a metatarsal injury and has been squeezing in extra training sessions to get back in prime condition. "When you have been out injured for 10 months, you know you are going to have to work really hard to get back into shape," said the 23-year-old. "That's why I have been putting extra sessions in at Melwood this season. "I have been out there on the training pitch when the other lads have finished, because you never know when the call might come. "It has been worth the extra effort, too, because I feel really fit and strong and ready to step in. "There have been a few stories about me recently, but I couldn't be happier. I'm really glad to be a Liverpool player, and all I want is to play a part in a great start." |

Would've been nice if Agger could've said he was glad to be a Liverpool player before he was pretty much garunteed 3 months of playing time because of Skrtel's injury
I'm a big fan of Agger though, I hope he can impress rafa so we can have 3 great centre backs, instead of 2 and just one shakey one. I pray that Agger doesn't re-injure his foot. If he does we're kinda screwed

PONGOLLE EAGER FOR REDS REUNION
Joe Curran 09 October 2008 Florent Sinama-Pongolle has admitted Atletico Madrid's forthcoming clash with Liverpool will be the biggest match of his career. The former Liverpool striker has found the net four times in six appearances for Atletico since signing from Recreativo in July, and Pongolle is hoping to he can continue his impressive form against Liverpool in the Champions League in two weeks time. "For me it's the biggest game in my career," Pongolle told LFC magazine. "It's going to be very, very hard, but I can't wait to go back to Anfield - it’s something special." With both teams currently level on points in Group D, the match at the Estadio Vincente Calderon could determine who finishes top of the group, but Pongolle knows how difficult it will be to get a result against a resurgent Reds team. "We are both two really good teams, but Liverpool have experience over us and are favourites because they are always in the competition. "But I think this season, Atletico Madrid has a very good team and we have started well and beaten good teams like Schalke, so a lot of teams wouldn't like to play us." The French striker has blossomed in la Liga since his three-year stint at Anfield and is excited about returning to Anfield for the return match in November. "Since I left, I have only been back to Anfield once. It was for the semi-final of the Champions League against Chelsea in 2007. "I invited four players with me from Recreativo. What a game! I was jumping in the air and falling over people when Dirk Kuyt scored the winning penalty. "I went out with all of the players after the game to celebrate as well. All of the Recre players couldn’t believe what it was like. There’s no atmosphere in the world like it at Anfield. "It was a good three years for me even though I didn’t play as much as I would have liked. "I had a very good atmosphere with the fans and I know a lot of them wanted me to get a chance. "I won't forget that because they were special to me and its only right that I wouldn't celebrate. "Every player who has played there with a good relationship with the supporters would say exactly the same. "It's a really special game. When Torres and Pepe come back to the Calderon, it will be really special for them and when me and Luis Garcia go back to Anfield, it will be special for us. "The tie has everything and I can't wait. I would say it is probably the biggest game of my career." |

I don't think Pongolle ever really suited the Premiership, I reckon he's found his place in La Liga, but I would love him to return in a Liverpool shirt someday..

Yeh i think Pongolle is a better player at the minute and looks very suited to the spanish style of play! But id like to see N'gog get a chance before everyone judges him! |

I don't know if we've seen enough of N'Gog to compare him to Sinama.. I can see what your saying though..

Sinama-Pongolle showed potential when he played well, but he didn't play enough. N'Gog hasn't played much yet, but I have been impressed with what I have seen so far. I don't think we saw the best of Sinama at Liverpool.

Flo didn't get much of a chance to prove himself under Rafa. At the time we had Cisse,Baros,Owen then later on morientes, who were all a head of flo in the team. Had he been given a regular first team spot i think we could of had a real star

Yep. Thats the problem at the club at the moment, they are all to scared to blood the youth in the cup games because of the physical side to the game
![]() One of the reasons we will probably never see another Carra,Stevie or Owen in our side because of the fear of playing them. We have a promising bunch of lads in Spearing,Darby and Lindfield are all proper scousers born and bread but will probably be sold because of foreign imports

Spearing has been in the reserves/Youth team for about 4 years now and still hasn't played in any competitive game for us. Darby maybe be given a chance considering the lack of players we have at RB, cant see him being first choice though

A club of Liverpool's stature cannot risk playing youth players, except for cup games and they don't come often enough. But we don't have as much pressure on us to succeed as much as you do, so can blood our youth players into the first team. Hence why we have an excellent and successful youth setup. That is why the big 4 have to buy the best from abroard, because they don't have time to groom players to perfection, so they buy it instead. Look at the FA Youth Cup final - Chelsea only had about 2 English players. We only had about 2 non-English players, and we still won.
