Gareth Barry better than Gerrard?

Gareth Barry is now England's first choice midfielder according to Aston Villa team-mate Stiliyan Petrov.

Chelsea star Frank Lampard and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard were always regarded as being at the heartbeat of England's golden generation.

But the duo's failure to form a promising rapport at international level handed leftfooted maestro Barry a chance last year.

Villa midfielder Petrov, 29, believes Barry has now proved himself to be key man in the nation's engine room.

Barry, 27, won his 23rd cap in the 4-1 victory in Croatia playing alongside Lampard under boss Fabio Capello, who was without the crocked Gerrard.

But tomorrow Barry lines up in direct opposition to international colleague Lampard, with Capello expected to be at Stamford Bridge to see the pair battle it out.

And Petrov reckons Barry's intelligent displays in England's holding role make it a fight between Lampard and Gerrard to partner him in this month's World Cup qualifiers.

Bulgaria star Petrov said: "Other players who are trying to get into the English national team should learn from Gareth. He showed such determination as he was fighting with two of the best midfield players in the world in Lampard and Gerrard.

"But now you can say Gareth is the main guy in the England midfield, which is impressive as it's hard to get there but even harder to keep your place.

"England have outstanding midfield players, but it seems Gareth has been Capello's best because he's always in the team. Gareth has had to wait his turn but now he's determined to keep his place. He never gave up and it's great seeing someone going away with their national team with a smile on their face.

"He missed international football for quite a long time but now he comes back stronger with more confidence and he looks like he's never been out of it.

"He's playing well and pulling strings there and I think the other England players respect him."

Barry, who made his England debut in 2000, almost quit Villa this summer for Liverpool as the Anfield club tabled four bids for him.

But manager Martin O'Neill refused to cash in on his biggest star and Petrov now believes Villa can break into the top four with Barry pulling the strings.

"We're all happy Gareth is still in our team and not in someone else's causing us trouble," added Petrov ahead of thirdplaced Villa's trip to league leaders Chelsea.

"I have a good partnership with Gareth but it is not hard because he's a worldclass player and he knows how to play football.

"I hope it will be the first step for us getting into the top four by keeping Gareth and then bringing in even more good players and making us stronger.

"I'm happy, we've had a great start to the season and we're going to Chelsea on Sunday where if we win we could be top of the league so you can't ask for better.

"I don't think we should be scared of going there. We have got confidence, we have started well and everybody's fit now, ready to go."

I think not. Even though he is a good midfielder, he will NEVER reach the level that makes Gerrard one of the truly most gifted central-midfielders in the world.

There is a reason why we didn't buy Barry..

Petrov needs to realise that..

Rafa rebuffs Real's Agger interest

Rafa Benitez has moved quickly to dismiss speculation surrounding the future of Daniel Agger by declaring that the Denmark international is ‘not for sale.’
Real Madrid vice-president Jose Angel Sanchez confirmed his side’s interest in Agger this week but Benitez insists he sees the defender’s long-term future at Anfield.
In a scarcely-veiled reference to misgivings about his Reds contract, Agger admitted recently that he was aware of the Webster Clause – a stipulation that allows players to buy out the remainder of their contract – but Benitez has since expressed a willingness to open discussions over a new deal.
Agger, who is not currently considered a first choice by Benitez, has a contract with The Reds that runs until 2010.
"The situation is very simple, Daniel Agger is our player and he is not for sale," said Benitez in a statement issued on Liverpool's official website.
"His future is at Anfield and nowhere else. He knows my ideas because we have talked with him and he has a long future with us.
"We do not want to lose our concentration just before we play Manchester City by talking about other things but it is important that people know that Agger is not for sale."

I HOPE this is true, because i want see agger at anfield more years and years

In a way he's right. Not that Barry is better than Gerrard only an idiot would say that.

But in England now its either going to be

Barry and Gerrard or
Barry and Lampard

Because Barry knows his place and covers his partner, not fighting for the spotlight like Gerrard and Lampard do, both making runs into the box at the same time and leaving a gaping hole in midfield.

Hopefully Capello wont try to lump Gerrard and Lampard together again when theyre both fit.

Rafa: Gerrard Can Score Another 100

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has handed Steven Gerrard a target, saying the midfielder should score 20 goals a season for the next five seasons.

The Reds skipper celebrated his 100th Liverpool goal in midweek against PSV Eindhoven yet the Spaniard sees no reason why the midfielder cannot score another century of goals for his club.
Speaking to the press about his captain, Benitez said: “Steven is young still, he has to score maybe 20 goals a season for five years, but he can do it.”
Gerrard, who turned 28 in May, certainly has many years left at the top level and his manager believes that barring any serious injuries, the England international can only improve and add to his scoring record.
“If he has no injuries he can do it. He is more mature now, he knows what to do on the pitch, he can score at that level,” said Benitez before adding, “He is enjoying his football now at his age. The quality that he had is really improving.”
The Liverpool captain reportedly almost left the club to join Chelsea three years ago but decided to stay and looks set to complete his career at Anfield.
Whilst Manchester City have been linked with a move for the midfielder, it appears unlikely he would leave his home town club and certainly Benitez appears to have no intention of allowing him to leave Merseyside.
Speaking about Gerrard, Benitez was quick to lavish praise on his captain and revealed how highly he rated him. He said: “I rate Gerrard amongst the very best offensive midfielder in the world, maybe there are only four or five players in his role in the world who are as good.”
Interestingly Liverpool’s next fixture is against Manchester City on Sunday when Benitez takes his side to Eastlands.

FROM GOAL.COM

I THINK GERRARD can do this...

Parry rejects ground share

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has ruled out sharing a ground with Everton and insists the club's new stadium will be built.

Rumours that Liverpool and Everton could share a new stadium emerged last week after council leader Warren Bradley claimed Liverpool's attitude towards a shared stadium was softening. However, Parry has rejected the idea of sharing a ground with their local rivals and is adamant Liverpool will finally complete their move to a new home once the current financial turmoil in the country stabilises. "Ground share is not being considered. With the financial markets in the turmoil as they are, any major construction project at this time is difficult, it is risky," Parry told Radio Five Live's Sportsweek. "It is a case of a delay while things settle down, it is still a very, very good long term project. The economics of it still make underlying sense.

Premier clubs eye Diogo

Premier League scouts are flocking to check on Olympiakos star Diogo.
Chelsea and Liverpool have both requested VIP seats for Sunday's match when they face local rivals AEK Athens, while Middlesbrough dispatched a scout to watch the midweek clash with Danish side Nordsjaelland.

Boro had Derek Bragg of The Scouting Network at the game to watch Diogo and Sebastian Leto, currently on loan at the club from Liverpool, for the home side and Martin Bernburg of Nordsjaelland.

Bragg admitted that both Diogo and Leto - who was denied a work-permit to play in England earlier this summer - would both make impacts in England.
"Diogo and Leto are very good players," he told the Greek press.

My thoughts exactly

Then again if he's a quality striker he'll fill in better than say, Pacheco or N'Gog

11 PM at the moment.

Game starts at 1 AM

I'll have to keep myself busy until then... Thank god for West Ham vs Bolton

Half time's always tricky though.
