![]() Reds linked to yet another Real Madrid reject According to Borja Valero’s agent, the Real Mallorca midfielder is being linked with a move to the red half of Merseyside. Valero’s agent Alexander Caamano said, “Liverpool are interested in the boy after monitoring his progress last season. I hope to speak with Mallorca about this matter in the next few days.” Mallorca’s sporting director Nando Pons is reluctant to sell the player, but will consider if a great offer comes knocking. Pons said: “The club needs money but we don’t want to break up the team we had last season. But if a great offer arrives we will be forced to consider it.” Borja Valero caught the eye of Liverpool scouts with his commanding performance last season. The 23-year-old player joined RCD Mallorca after being released by Real Madrid. |

Crouchie is gone then
![]() Peter Crouch completes move to Portsmouth Striker hopes to revive his England international career after returning to the South Coast in £11million move Oliver Kay and Gary Jacob Peter Crouch was putting the finishing touches to his £11million return to Portsmouth last night, a move that he hopes will reinvigorate his England career and that Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, hopes will allow him to secure his top targets. Liverpool have been among the few serious movers during a quiet summer in the transfer market, signing Andrea Dossena from Udinese for £8million and Philipp Degen from Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer, but Benítez has encountered frustration at the top end of the market, with Aston Villa demanding £18million for Gareth Barry and Tottenham Hotspur looking for a similar fee for Robbie Keane, the Ireland forward. The sale of Crouch should bring Liverpool closer to a resolution over Barry, having had a bid worth £15million rejected by Villa last week, but the Liverpool manager's pursuit of Keane looks more problematic. With John Arne Riise sold to AS Roma and Scott Carson, Charles Itandje and Xabi Alonso expected to leave, the latter probably for Juventus, the Liverpool manager feels that he is on course to meet his target of raising more than £30million to reinvest in new players. Diego Cavalieri, the Palmeiras goalkeeper, is another expected arrival. Crouch had a medical examination yesterday after Liverpool accepted Portsmouth's offer, of which £2million is conditional on his success at Fratton Park. Far from worried by a perceived drop in class, Crouch, who scored 19 goals in 39 appearances in an earlier spell at Portsmouth, is delighted, having been frustrated by Benítez's selection policy last season. The striker believes that regular first-team football will help his England career, having yet to start a match under Fabio Capello, the manager. Harry Redknapp’s talent search Portsmouth in talks with Crouch Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring Manchester City's move for Brad Friedel, the Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper. If a transfer takes place, Blackburn would require a replacement and Tottenham would probably be willing to offer Paul Robinson as part of a deal to sign David Bentley, the Blackburn winger. To add to the complexity, Villa, who are vying to sign Bentley, have expressed interest in Robinson, but have yet to make an offer. Portsmouth's search for a left back has been narrowed, with Nadir Belhadj, of Lens, being considered. Portsmouth took Lucien Aubey, the left back, on loan from Lens in January, having allowed Djimi Traoré, who plays in the same position, to join Rennes on loan for the same period. Traoré has since returned. Villa are monitoring Steed Malbranque, the left winger who will be allowed to leave Tottenham, and are close to a deal for Frank Simek, the Sheffield Wednesday right back. West Ham United have offered employment to Matteo Ferrari, the central defender who is out of contract at Roma. Leonardo, the AC Milan technical director, has said that the Italian club have not given up hope of signing Emmanuel Adebayor, the Arsenal forward. “It's no secret we're interested in signing a forward and are studying candidates,” Leonardo said. “Adebayor is a player I really like. We are waiting for the right time to move.” Charlton Athletic have inquired about signing on loan Hameur Bouazza, the winger who joined Fulham for an initial £3million from Watford last summer. The Algeria player made 21 appearances last season. Alexander Tunchev, the Bulgaria central defender, has signed a three-year contract with Leicester City, moving from CSKA Sofia for an undisclosed fee, subject to a work permit. Zenit St Petersburg have rejected a second offer of £12million from Barcelona for Andrei Arshavin, the Russia playmaker, who is also a target of Luiz Felipe Scolari, the Chelsea manager. Crouch Exit To Spark Anfield Spending Spree?
Peter Crouch’s impending departure from Liverpool will finally allow the Merseyside giants to start their summer spending in earnest, according to The Sun… Liverpool’s official website revealed yesterday that the club had accepted an ₤11million offer for Crouch from Portsmouth, with the deal expected to be completed in the next few days. The beanpole hitman’s return to the South Coast will leave a noticeable hole in Liverpool’s forward, as it would leave only Andriy Voronin or the inexperienced Ryan Babel to cover for Fernando Torres (if we assume Dirk Kuyt has found his niche on the right). And even if Babel takes up a more central role – which many perceive to be his natural one – that would leave a sizeable hole on the left of the Reds’ attack, which Yossi Benayoun has limited success filling last season. Rafa Benitez had been told by club co-owner Tom Hicks that he would have to sell before he buys, which leaves Xabi Alonso straddling the exit at Anfield while Gareth Barry has well and truly slammed the door behind him at Aston Villa. But Alonso could yet stay if Benitez chooses to use the Crouch sale to fund the Barry deal, as the ex-Valencia boss has stated that both could play together due to the latter’s versatility and left-footedness. Of course, if Alonso should move to Juventus for around ₤16million as supposed, ₤18million-priced Barry would simply replace the Basque playmaker in central midfield while the Crouch money would be put towards genuine left-sided attackers. Valencia winger David Silva is right at the top of the wish-list, although his ₤20million price tag might require additional sales on the Reds’ part, which could see Benayoun and/or Jermaine Pennant offloaded. Bring on the transfers! |

![]() Xabi Alonso insists he would have no problem staying at Liverpool, as a proposed move to Juventus stalls due to the two clubs' inability to settle on a transfer fee. The classy Spaniard was expected to tie-up a switch to Serie A at the conclusion of the European Championship after Liverpool intimated a willingness to sell. Gareth Barry's long-protracted move from Aston Villa was thought to be reliant on Alonso's exit generating funds but the likely departure of Peter Crouch to Portsmouth would swell the transfer coffers significantly. And should it be that Juve fail to match Liverpool's valuation, Alonso will be more than content to stay on Merseyside. Title tilt "I am very happy with Liverpool, the city, the people and they treat me very well," Alonso is quoted in The S*n. "It's great to be European champion with my club and with my country but I'd love a league medal. "It's the one that is missing." |
