Swiss defender Philipp Degen has today put pen to paper on a four year Anfield deal. The 25-year-old - who was an unused substitute during the recent European Championships - has opted for a new career with the Reds after his contact at Borussia Dortmund expired last season.
Degen becomes the first new arrival at Anfield this summer, with left back Andrea Dossena likely to follow in his footsteps over the coming days. After agreeing to sign Degen last month, manager Rafael Benitez said: "Philipp is still young but has gained great experience from playing in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and on the international stage with Switzerland. He also played in the Champions League during his time with Basel and so is used to top level football. "He is an offensive player with great energy and a winning mentality. His strength is going forward and I am confident he will be prove to be a quality addition to our squad." He added: "Sometimes you can find these players on the market. When you find a player like him who costs no money it means you can use money for improving other parts of the squad. "He is a good signing, a player of potential, who can help us improve in the wide areas." Degen began his career with FC Basel in 1996, making his debut five years later. Four seasons in the first team followed, during which he claimed three league titles and one domestic cup. His time at St Jakob Park also gave him a taste of Champions League football. In fact, Degen was an unused sub when Basel claimed a 1-1 draw at Anfield in 2002-03. In 2005 the defender joined the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund. Degen, who featured four times for his country in the 2006 World Cup, spent three years with the German giants, the last of which was blighted by injury. The full-back recovered in time for Euro 2008, a tournament co-hosted by Switzerland. Unfortunately he did not feature as the Swiss failed to negotiate the group stages. Degen, who is fluent in French and German, has a twin, David, who also plays professional football.

![]() Liverpool linked with move for Palmeiras’ Cavalieri Liverpool could be signing Palmeiras goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri, according to Setanta Sports. The player has made a trip to Europe to secure a work permit and some reports are suggesting that Liverpool could be his destination. Palmeiras’ sporting director Genaro Marin confirms that there are several clubs interested in signing the 26-year-old goalkeeper. “A transfer is being discussed, the way to pay (…),” Marin told UOL Esporte. “We’ll look to go further tomorrow (Thursday) because there’s not just one team interested. We have signed a document with the team that forces us to keep their name secret, that’s why we can’t reveal it at the moment.” “They came to speak to me, to Palmeiras, and the negotiations are in progress.” |

Its very tight money. If Rafa and the board were serious about mounting a title challenge we'd have signed Danny Alves, the best right back in the world, not more average players.
This Degen guy didnt even make the starting lineup for the swiss team, the first team to get knocked out of the Euros!!! It's starting to **** me off after so many years of brining in no names and no wingers lalala!! So what did Benitez offer for this Cavalieri guy? $100k, 2 tacos and a packet of chips? |

Degen was signed as a back-up player, it has no reflection of how little money we have.. His contract was up, and also he didn't play for the Swiss because he was injured.. It shows, how important is he to the Swiss if he was taken to the Euro's while he was injured.. Think about it.. And what do you mean bringing in 'no names'... Players like Torres, Alonso, Reina, Babel, Mascherano, Agger, Skrtel etc. are no names?.. What? Rafa has done this every summer... He NEVER announces his targets, not even when the deal is seconds from completion... He uses 'deals' to cover-up deals he may be making.. Like last year, we were linked with some Spanish striker, and then the Torres deal was announced.. And finally, just because players like Cavalieri and Degen are not well known, does not make them lalalala.. Had you heard of Skrtel when he joined us?.. Agger? Garcia? Even as far back as Hyypia we have signed unkown players and they have been class.. Get off Rafa's back and prove that you are a Liverpool fan, trust him, he has done this before and it has worked.. @ Brendyne, we have signed a promising goalkeeper in Bouzanis, he isn't ready to challenge for a first team place, as any other 17 year old keeper.. We need an experienced back-up keeper to fill in without any fuss.. |

Ye I agree we've made some great signing under Rafa, Mascherano and Torres being the best two I think. But I realy don't think we would miss Reina if he ever left for some reason, fumbles the ball too much, he's a good shot stopper but his timing sucks and his handling.

Plus whats so special about Rafinha. for all we know degen could be great, just cos hes on a free doesnt mean hes rubbish. And yes we would miss reina. golden glove for 3 seasons running and hes world class. theres only cech casillas and buffon who i would even consider having if he went

Rafa on Degen, Torres and Pre-Season
Speaking exclusively to Liverpoolfc.tv as the new boy met his teammates for the first time today, Benitez explained what the defender could offer and shed light on how pre-season was going so far. He also reflected on the signing of Fernando Torres – a deal completed a year ago today. ![]() First of all, how pleased are you to welcome Philipp Degen to Liverpool? I'm really pleased because we were working to try and find this kind of player in the full-back position with the ability to push forward, so I think he is a good signing. It was another good acquisition through the scouting department because it is another Bosman player. What qualities do you think he will bring to the side? He's very strong. He likes to go forward; he's very offensive and will give us options on the right-hand side. People talk about wingers but he will give us width from the full-back area and that is important too. Was the right side an area you were looking to improve? Yes, we were looking to improve some areas. On the right side we wanted to be more offensive and also on the left, and that is the reason we brought in Degen. He'll face stiff competition from the likes of Steve Finnan and Alvaro Arbeloa, is that something you are looking for in every position? Yes, clearly. It is important for me to have one, two or even three players who can play in one position or different positions and compete for their place. When did you first become aware of him? The season before last we were watching him and we knew he would be a good addition. But we made our move this year because it was a better situation in terms of the contracts, so it was straightforward. You've been back in training a week or so now, how satisfied are you with things so far? I'm really pleased. The commitment of the players is fantastic. Sometimes you need to stop them because they play with a very high tempo. I'm really pleased and it's normal at the start of the season for everyone to be eager to play. We also have players coming back next week, but with the ones we have here this week we are really pleased. Today marks a year since Fernando Torres signed for the club. How would you reflect on his first year at Liverpool? I think everyone knows he has been fantastic for us. We have our good memories about the day he arrived and how well he has done. I am really, really happy with him and hopefully he will be even better next season - if that is possible. And finally, your thoughts on the first pre-season game at Tranmere next week? The first game is always important. It will be close to our people and interesting for Merseyside, so we will try to do well.

DOSSENA SIGNS FOUR-YEAR DEAL
Paul Hassall 04 July 2008 Andrea Dossena has today put pen to paper on a four-year Anfield deal. The Italian full-back becomes Rafael Benitez's second acquisition of the summer following the arrival of Swiss international Philipp Degen. Dossena, who has been capped once at senior level by Italy, is seen as the ideal replacement for John Arne Riise, who departed for Roma earlier this month. The 26-year-old began his career aged 14 with Hellas Verona in northern Italy, coming through the ranks before spending four seasons in the senior squad. His big break came when he signed for Udinese in 2005, though he was immediately loaned to Treviso FBC 1993 for a year. The defender returned to the Stadio Friuli ahead of the 2006-07 campaign, where his form eventually saw him make his international bow in a friendly against South Africa in October 2007. By the end of the season his move to Merseyside had been confirmed, with Dossena saying: "Liverpool are a great team, and it is great to be linked to such a famous club. I want to play Champions League football, the Reds have already won it and they often get to the big games. In England, they are on the same level as Manchester United."

I live right next to Rosenborg's town, Trondheim... Why don't I know this?
The Norwegian LFC Supporters Club homepage does not know about this... I think Sky are horribly wrong... The only Norwegian team LFC are playing against is Vålerenga IF, the 5th of August... The team from the capital, Oslo.
