Depends, if Rafa plans on using VDV (if he signs) as an attacking midfielder, then Alonso will still remain unless Barry joins.. |

Juve set to make bid for Xabi Alonso
Jun 23 2008 by Nick Smith, Liverpool Daily Post JUVENTUS are set to make their first official move for Xabi Alonso this week after the player hinted he fancied a move to Italy. And Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is hopeful that his £16million valuation will be matched as he continues his quest to maximise his assets to build more transfer funds. Juve have confirmed their pursuit of the midfielder but have been pondering over their move in light of interest in at least two other players in the same position. But they have been alerted by Alonso speaking of his "fascination" with Italian football over the weekend and will look to prise him away form Anfield this week, although he is still involved in Euro 2008. "I have little to say about Juve because at the moment I am very focused on Euro 2008 and on Spain," said Alonso before his side reached then semi-finals with victory over Italy last night. "I don’t have any news on my future, at this time my future is only the Euros. "We’ll see what will happen with Juve. It’s difficult to say today. I spent four fantastic years at Liverpool, but I have to admit that I have always been fascinated by Italian football. "However, it’s too soon to talk about the future. In short: we’ll see." He added: "Juve are one of the biggest teams in Europe, perhaps the biggest in Italy. They have very many fans not only in Italy but all over the world. "In short: a great club." |

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has confirmed his interest in signing Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun.
Manchester City have also been linked with the Israeli winger, but Redknapp, who made his first signing of the summer by landing Glenn Little from Reading on a free transfer, admits it could be difficult to prise him away from Anfield. Another Liverpool fringe player, Peter Crouch, has been continually linked with a move to Fratton Park, but he could prove too expensive for the FA Cup winners. Redknapp told The News: "Of course I'd like to have someone like Yossi Benayoun. "He's a top player. I don't know what the chances are of getting him out of Liverpool. "It's known I like Crouchie, too. But it doesn't look like anything is happening there. I think Liverpool want a bit too much money for him. "If that's the case then we'll move on to the next option." This is great news. if we get at least 5m-7m for him. Keep pennant and get Benayoun out. He's a decent player but it's obvious he'll be on the bench reguarly next season and it's a step closer to silva/villa

If we want to buy a cheap midfielder with quality then we should be looking at someone like De La Red who can create and score goals as well as dropping back to defend a la Stevie

Benayoun pledges future to Reds
by Alex Livie, 23 June 2008 Yossi Benayoun seems intent on dashing Harry Redknapp’s hopes of signing him by insisting he has no intention of leaving Liverpool. Redknapp is intent on keeping Portsmouth moving forward and he indicated on Monday that he was keen on luring Benayoun away from Anfield. The Israel international had a steady first season at Anfield, but is keen to remain on Merseyside despite admitting they are unlikely to land the Premier League title any time soon. “There are three or four clubs in England willing to buy me after the season I have just had,” Benayoun told the Jewish Chronicle. “But I want to stay at Liverpool until the end of my career. ”It really moves me when I go out on to the pitch at Anfield and the crowd start singing.” Liverpool last won the league title in 1990 and Benayoun feels the club may have hit a mental obstacle they are struggling to overcome. "It could be that after so many years without becoming champions that a mental problem has developed at the club,” said Benayoun. “You have to remember this is the toughest league in the world and Liverpool are never going to be the favourites. I understand it is difficult to remain at the top but things can change so quickly.” Pompey may miss out on Benayoun, but reports suggest they are set to beat NEC Nijmegen to the capture of Ben Sahar from Chelsea. After watching yesterday's Spain V Italy game, i think Silva should be our top target. Signing him is more important than any other we could make. He had several great moments in the game against a very solid italian defense. He's also young.
If Silva is the only signing we make for the rest of the summer, i think we will be set. Unless we want to make a bid for another striker. |

Villa would be a great addition. Rafa would have to do something crazy to pull off the double swoop though.
Villa is much like torres, although i think his dribbling ability is slightly better. You guys might find this interesting...... Villa Focussed As Tottenham Approach David Villa has stated that his primary objective is helping Spain in the European Championships amid reports that Valencia have accepted an offer from Tottenham Hotspur. The striker has been sending mixed messages in recent weeks with his agent stating that he was keen to move clubs this summer, while he has been quoted as stating that he will return to Mestalla for next term. Tottenham are said to have matched Valencia's €25m asking price and have permission to speak to Villa himself after Spain's run at Euro 2008 concludes. While many clubs have been linked with a move for the player that has netted four goals in the summer tournament in Austria and Switzerland, rumours persist that Spurs' deal was done beforehand. Stories are circulating in Spain that an agreement was put in place, but that an announcement would not be made by either club until later this month or when Valencia have found a replacement. While there maybe a small backlash from Ché fans, Villa's desire to try his luck elsewhere is well known although he will wait for the club to tell him he can go and not demand a transfer. "In the event that Valencia told me that they were going to sell me then I would consider my options," Villa is quoted as saying by the Sunday Mirror. "It is an issue between the club and not something that I am thinking about. My focus is on the tournament and making sure Spain do well. "This is not the time to be thinking about my personal future." |

Benitez risks civil war by demanding £50m transfer kitty
By David Maddock 24/06/2008 Rafael Benitez will risk more Anfield aggro by demanding £50million for big-name transfers. With peace just settled after a year of bitter infighting at the club, Liverpool boss Benitez will gamble it all by asking for a new fortune. He wants to buy Spain superstar David Villa and Valencia's Spanish winger David Silva - as well as Gareth Barry from Aston Villa. It could spark another civil war on Merseyside and is a huge call by Benitez, who almost lost his job last year when he spoke out against the transfer restrictions imposed on him by the club's American owners. The row spread throughout Anfield, leaving the manager's ally Tom Hicks and George Gillett at each other's throats and chief executive Rick Parry fearing for his position. But with Gillett brokering a peace deal with Hicks - and accepting that the pair must invest in the future - Benitez feels he can now flex his managerial muscle to demand more signings. The Spaniard will try to offset some of the required cash with sales but it is a risky strategy, because if it threatens the uneasy alliance between Hicks and Gillett then it could undermine the whole future of the club. Benitez is convinced he must act - or Liverpool will never challenge Manchester United and Chelsea for the title. He has made two signings so far, the free-transfer capture of Swiss right-back Philipp Degen and £7million Italian defender Andrea Dossena from Udinese. But it is the next three stars he reckons will shape the future of Liverpool at a cost of around £50m. He has virtually done a deal to bring Barry to Anfield for around £15m, but wants to spend even more on wide players. Top target on the left is Silva, who has starred in Spain's run to the Euro 2008 semi-final. But he will not come cheap with Valencia demanding £20m. Benitez is also interested in Villa, but until now assumed he simply would not have the funds to compete with Real Madrid and Barcelona. The other Valencia star has already shown his ability to form a devastating partnership with Fernando Torres. Villa and Silva together would cost at least £35m. Benitez will attempt to appease the Americans by selling Xabi Alonso to Juventus for £15m, along with the £4m sale of John Arne Riise to Roma, plus a raft of other unwanted players. Benitez tempted to cash in on Yossi
Jun 24 2008 by Nick Smith, Daily Post LIVERPOOL will consider cashing in on Yossi Benayoun if they receive any concrete offers. The Israeli playmaker, bought for £5m from West Ham last summer, has not previously been on the list of players manager Rafael Benitez is looking to offload as he continues to seek the funds that will land him his targets. But with Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp admitting an interest, while also expressing doubts over raising the necessary cash to take Peter Crouch from Anfield, Liverpool’s hand could be forced. Benitez would prefer to retain Benayoun as a useful squad member as the player is happy on Merseyside despite his apparent lack of first team opportunities. He recently said: “There are three or four clubs in England willing to buy me after the season I have just had. “But I want to stay at Liverpool until the end of my career.” He did play in 30 Premier League games last season but started in only half of those, while his biggest impact came in the Champions League group stages when he scored a hat-trick in the 8-0 win over Besiktas. He also hit a treble in the FA Cup win over Havant & Waterlooville but generally found it difficult to force his way into Benitez’s preferred attacking formation for much of the campaign. Bids of £6m would be well within range of the likes of Premier League rivals Portsmouth and other reported potential suitors such as Manchester City and Middlesbrough. Redknapp said: “Of course I’d like to have someone like Yossi Benayoun in our side. “He’s a top player. I don’t know what the chances are of getting him out of Liverpool. “It’s known I like Crouchie, too. But it doesn’t look like anything is happening there. “I think Liverpool want a bit too much money for him. “If that’s the case then we’ll move on to the next option.” Liverpool have added another friendly to their pre-season programme by confirming a game against Norwegian side Valerengen in Oslo on August 5. good on Rafa. He knows that we need quality players badly and he's trying to get that. All Liverpool fans would want the owners out before Rafa.

Hopefully that is true, this is the kind of stuff that has to happen for us to make a title run.
Lets say we get Villa, Silva, and Barry. And that we lose Alonso, which looks likely. What formation do you think would work best? I really would not like to see Mascherano on the bench, But we should be using Barry if we paid that much money for him. |
