What The Papers Say

Roo must be joking
Sir Alex Ferguson erupted with anger yesterday at the prospect of Wayne Rooney being banned for three games. The furious Manchester United boss knocked reporters' tape recorders to the floor as he thumped a table and labelled as a "disgrace" and a "joke" the possibility the FA will punish Rooney for his Boxing Day clash with Bolton's Tal Ben Haim. Sir Alex claims he is the victim of a witch-hunt and insists it is Ben Haim who should be in trouble for play-acting after crashing to the ground as if punched. "The Bolton player should be up before the FA, not Rooney and it's a disgrace," said Fergie. "Because it's Wayne Rooney and Manchester United, I can understand there being a focus on what happened, but the bigger concern is what the other player did.”
David Anderson, Daily Mirror

Rio’s the best in the world
Alex Ferguson reckons Rio Ferdinand is the world’s greatest defender — and insists he will only get better. Ferdinand turned in another top-class performance in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Bolton on Boxing Day. It was United’s 12th clean sheet in 22 games since Ferdinand returned from suspension. And Fergie will be looking for more defensive steel today at Aston Villa. The Old Trafford boss said: “Rio has been in incredible form. He is the best centre-half in the world. You have to remember he is still only 25 and is improving all the time.”
Neil Custis, The Sun

Ramos fee on rise
Arsene Wenger and Alex Ferguson have been told to get a move on if they want to sign Seville’s teenage prodigy Sergio Ramos. The Sun revealed last week how the Arsenal and Manchester United bosses were fighting it out for Spanish football’s latest star. But Jose Maria Ramos, the player’s agent and father, has warned that his son’s buy-out clause is due to rise from £12m to £18m in less than three weeks when he has made 25 appearances for Seville’s first team.
Staff reporter, The Sun

Djordjic moves on
Winger Bojan Djordjic has quit Manchester United for Rangers. The Swede, 22, joins the Scottish club on an initial six-month contract with an option of a further two years. He said: “I always wanted to represent a big club at first-team level. It’s a great opportunity to get my career back on track.” Djordjic spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, Aarhus and Red Star Belgrade where he played alongside new team-mate Dragan Mladenovic.

what will happen with rooney. He gets in so many confrontations. He'll end up costing utd a match someday because of his problems and sir alex will go balistic. He's an amazing player, but his dumb decisions need to be sorted out. I guess he is just young and will grow out of it.

gigsy must be on somethin.

Rooney will learn from his mistakes as he gets older, Alex Fergurson knows how to raise young players, look at Paul Scholes or Beckham.

I don't think Rooney deserves to be suspended, it wasn't serious at all, you saw how the Bolton player reacted? that was even worse imo.

Anyway, we played pretty well, i really thought Ronaldo did well when he came in in the second half, and Giggs, omg what form he's in

oh yeh rooney is a class player, and that unibrow for Bolton took a pathetic dive.

i think rooney will have to grow out of it. He just needs some anger management. Its catch 22 his passion makes him brilliant but also puts him into compromising situations.

that bolton defender is such a coward.

Bolton have really lost their way. They started off the season pretty well, i thought they would have good year, only half over though.

Btw, i'm willing to agree with Sir Alex about Rio being the best central defender in the world.

I think Rio and Carles Puyol is the two best central defenders on earth.

D
But the fact is he did lash out his arm, whether he dived or not isn't the issue. he intent was there and that warrants a red card.......not counting the fact that he did quite clearly make contact

yeah, he shouldn't have done that, but THREE games?? isn't that a bit too much? One would be more fair.

And the thing is, if a player in eg Norwich would've done the same thing, it wouldn't get to big as it has gone with Rooney. Don't you guys agree on that?

If the ref had seen it, he would've been sent off............................punishment for a straight red, 3 game ban

I'll rephrase that, a player for a lower team would've been sent off.........but as it's Man Utd, the ref mysteriously missed the incident, what a total shocker

You mean that United got the ref on their side? if so you gotta be kidding

the thing Roon did wasn't even serious at all, it's a m-lalalalaing joke that he got a 3 game suspension.. it's almost as scandalous as when Mutu only got seven months for using cocaine.

Of course you don't put your hand in other peoples' faces, i know that facey. In Euro 2004, Totti spit in Poulsen's face, and he got suspended 3 games (which was all of the lasting games for Italy ).. do you think what Rooney did was as worse as that?

No, but what he did was still violent conduct which in any way, shape or form warrants a straight red card

Well well, but if you for just one minute cut the ref thinking and tell me what you really think? Does he deserve 3 games?

It was violent conduct, so yes he deserved a 3 match ban. That sort of behaviour can' be tolerated and needs to be stamped out of football

Hey, thanks for setting up a Utd thread! Glad they beat Villa....annoyed Arsenal beat Newcastle, but at the same time, SOMEONE has to close the gap on Chelsea

Yeah, but it's not good for United if someone ELSE closes the gap on chelsea,,

Yeah, about Newcastle - Arsenal, i got a bit angry, cause newcastle was the better team and Vieira had much luck in that goal (not blaming on luck).. same thing with Chelsea, they only scored in the end of the game

but they will drop some points against liverpool in this weekend
