Roma ace David Pizarro halalalala out at Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo, labelling him as a 'big head'.

Pizarro was unhappy with some of Ronaldo's antics during Roma's 2-0 defeat to United in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday night.

Chilean midfielder Pizarro was booked at the end of the first half for felling Ronaldo after some showboating from the Portuguese international.

Pizarro has accused Ronaldo of not showing respect to his opponents and the Roma man expects more tricks from the in-form winger in the return leg at Old Trafford.

Big head

"There is no doubt that he has quality, but it is also true that he has a big head," Pizarro told the Italian press.

"Some of his little tricks in the middle of the pitch were unnecessary and he needs to show some respect to his opposition. You can bet that we will have something to say about it in the return leg."

Pizarro admitted he was disappointed by the defeat and vowed Roma will do all they can to overturn the deficit in the second leg.

Disappointed

"We played our game and we are disappointed that we weren't able to make the most of our chances," added Pizarro

"Games are decided by certain moments, but I'd be interested to see how many shots they had.

"It just went badly even though we created plenty and if we had been able to convert our opportunities we wouldn't have lost.

"We still believe in our Scudetto and Champions League chances - this team will never give up."

He shouldnt call ronaldo that and its all a part of the game. I think maybe ronaldo has bedazzled him with the tricks and cant get the ball of him thats y he is saying that. Plus they loss anyway so he would strike up some kinda wierd comments about Crisitano. So what if he is a 'big head'? He performs well at times and still scores gols.

Rooney hails United backline

Striker salutes solid defence

Wayne Rooney has saluted Manchester United's defence after their memorable UEFA Champions League victory over Roma.

Sir Alex Ferguson watched his side triumph 2-0 in the Stadio Olimpico in the first leg of their quarter-final showdown to put themselves in pole position to progress to the last four.

Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed the headlines by finding the net against Roma, but the England forward believes it is his defensive colleagues who should be taking the plaudits.

Influential centre-back Nemanja Vidic was forced out of the action with a knee injury in the first-half, but replacement John O'Shea and his colleagues stood firm against the Serie A side.

Brilliant

Rooney told uefa.com: "The defence was brilliant and all season they've been the same so hopefully that will continue.

"I thought we defended well as a team. It was important to try to keep a clean sheet and then hopefully nick a goal and we did that just before half-time and it put us in a good position in the second half.

"We knew Roma would come out and attack us and it created a bit of space for us. We had the two counter-attacks and made them count."

Platform

Despite their comfortable advantage ahead of next week's second leg at Old Trafford, Rooney is not getting carried away with thoughts of the semi-finals.

He added: "It was a good professional job to come here and play well, and it gives us a good platform for next week.

"With the Champions League you never know so we'll have to go out focused and with a good attitude and then hopefully we'll see the second leg through."

Manchester United fear Nemanja Vidic could be out for the season after suffering a knee injury in their 2-0 win at Roma.

The Daily Mail says Vidic had tests on his injured knee at a Manchester hospital yesterday but it is understood that the Serbian's leg was so badly swollen it was difficult to assess the extent of the damage caused when he fell awkwardly during United's 2-0 win at the Olympic Stadium.

Vidic, 26, needs a more detailed examination this morning with United's medical staff resigned to the fact that he has suffered ligament damage.

The centre half looks to be out for a couple of weeks at least and perhaps will not play again this term.

It would be a big blow to United's chances of winning the Barclays Premier League and the Champions League and would bring back painful memories of last season when a sudden rush of injuries left Ferguson's side unable to get past the last four in Europe.

A United source said last night: "Nemanja came in this morning but could hardly walk. His knee is swollen and he did not look very happy after his first scan."

Yeh, it's up on ManUtd.com. Guess we should be "happy" with that, as there were fears of him being out for the rest of the season.

Four important (probably) league matches, probably a Champions League semi final and hopefully a final. So no, Paul.

yeah the league might be over by than... because he won it already but he will only miss 4 games... boro, roma, arsenal and blackburn. he will be back for the important game against chelsea and (the winner of schalke and barcelona). so it is kinda like a break. lucky we have back up.

rumour has it that gary neville might return... he wasn't going to return this season unless there is an injury in the back line and he will return if needed.... so he might return but i think Pique can do the job in the middle or brown in the middle and o'shea at right back...

Pizzaro is such a cry-baby.

1. Arrogant awesome players is a ManUtd trademark (Best, Charlton, Cantona)
2. Personalities are an important part of the sport
3. Ronaldo's technique would even make Pelé doubt himself.

Keep being arrogant Ronaldo, it suits you! I wouldn't mind if he was more arrogant though...

Vidic is an essential part of the back four. That is true, probably the most vital piece in it together with Ferdinand. However, from what I saw of O'shea in Rome and what I've seen of Pique earlier, I think we'll mange, albeit I doubt the defense will be as solid as before, but I don't think we'll lose our lead because of this injury.

I don't think we can demand the same level of quality from Pique and O'shea. After all Vidic is probably one of the best in the world at his job. Filling his shoes is a though task.
