Thomas Gravesen may end up leaving Real Madrid in the transfer window - but reports of a Manchester United bid are wide of the mark.

The 29-year-old former Everton midfielder has been eased out of the first-team picture at the Bernabeu this season, raising speculation of a return to the Premiership just 12 months after he quit Goodison Park.

Sir Alex Ferguson is known to be in the market for a central midfielder and has already confirmed he has no interest in recruiting Germany skipper Michael Ballack.

But, after an outlay of £12million on defensive duo Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic, it was thought Ferguson would wait until the summer before bolstering his midfield ranks.

Yet the potential availability of Gravesen - who did not even make the bench for last weekend's encounter with Villarreal despite a host of injuries and suspensions in the Real camp - is sure to have alerted Ferguson, and the presence of the Dane's agent John Sivebaek in Madrid on Wednesday afternoon has only heightened speculation.

But United officials have rejected talk of a bid and Sivebaek insists his arrival in Spain was purely connected with a deal which has seen Morten Skoubo move from Bronby to Real Sociedad. And the former Manchester United player claims he only moved onto Madrid as an afterthought.

"I was here anyway so I thought I would meet up with Thomas and go to watch Real Madrid's game against Athletic Bilbao tomorrow," said Sivebaek.

"The situation regarding Thomas has not changed at all. He has not played as many matches as he expected over the last few months and at 29 he just wants to play.

"If he can't do it in Madrid he might have to find another place to play but that situation is no different to last week.

"There is certainly no transfer imminent and if Manchester United have made a bid, I know nothing about it."

Sivebaek is hoping to arrange a meeting with Madrid officials over the next few days but with a recall looking less likely by the week, it does appear Gravesen's days in Spain are numbered.

However Real Madrid coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro claims he would be surprised if reports that Gravesen wants to return to the Premiership are true.

"I am surprised by the things that are written in the press," said Lopez Caro.

"I have not noticed anything, if I had I would have spoken to him.

"I only have praise for Gravesen, he is an excellent professional and a fantastic person. However, if anyone is not happy they can leave.

"Whoever doesn't want to help this team, they shouldn't lie to themselves or to the club or to those that are working."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored his first goal since returning from injury as the Reserves hammered sorry Leeds at Ewen Fields.

The Norwegian striker scored the fourth goal and completed 90 minutes as he continued his return to match sharpness in a one-sided victory for Rene Meulensteen's side.

The Dutch coach had promised January changes before the transfer window opened, and a glance at the starting XI served only to confirm his tip.

With striker Phil Marsh lining up at full-back alongside Academy defender Kieran Lee and first-team squad members Phil Bardsley and Gerard Pique, the defence certainly bore an unfamiliar appearance.

Fraizer Campbell also found himself making a rare start after Sylvan Ebanks-Blake's loan move to Antwerp, but his performance indicated that many more starts will be coming his way.

Giuseppe Rossi opened the scoring early on with a low, curling free-kick into Ian Bennett's bottom corner, and Campbell notched his first Reserves goal soon afterwards.

Working his way in from the right-hand side, the pacy forward dragged the ball onto his left foot before firing past the helpless Bennett to double United's advantage.

Less than 30 seconds after the interval he grabbed his second. Neumayr's superb drilled crossfield ball found Rossi, who nodded the ball down for Campbell to coolly flick the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper.

Leeds briefly rallied and pulled a goal back through Gavin Rotherick's thumping strike, but United were never in danger of surrendering their advantage.

Seven minutes from time came the moment Solskjaer had been working towards for the best part of two years.

Neumayr's corner was deflected on by Campbell and the Norwegian striker controlled the ball neatly on his chest before drilling it into the roof of the net to spark mass celebration around Ewen Fields.

In injury time Rossi notched his second of the night, converting a penalty after substitute Sean Evans had been felled inside the area.

Another bright spot was the return of Mark Howard as a second-half substitute, having recovered from cruciate knee ligament damage.

The result leaves Meulensteen's side one point behind Middlesbrough at the top of the table with two games in hand.

United: T Lee, Marsh, K Lee, Bardsley (Howard, 46), Piqué, Fox, Neumayr, Solskjaer, Campbell (S.Evans, 87), Rossi, Cooper.
Substitutes: Heaton, Moran, Puustinen.

Report by Steve Bartram.

Patrice Evra says the history and tradition of United were what convinced him to swap Monaco for Manchester.

The 24-year-old left-back was unveiled to the media at a press conference at United's training ground on Thursday morning following the completion of his transfer from the French side.

Evra, who spoke through an interpreter, says he is delighted to a part of what he describes as ' United's big family' and is relishing the task ahead.

"What has struck me since getting to Manchester is the fact that I'm at a big club, and also part of a big family," he explained.

"Since I've arrived, people have welcomed me really warmly and that's the thing that really strikes you when you come to this place.

"Coming here was a very easy decision for me to make, based on two reasons really.

"Firstly the history of United and then the stability of the club. It was an easy choice, one which I had made in my head straight away despite interest from other clubs.

"Monaco is a big club and there are some good players there, but at United there are some absolutely great players.

Evra added: "My job now is not to talk to the press, but to repay the confidence of the management and directors of United on the field, and not with words.

"If you come to a big club expecting not to have to compete for a spot in the starting XI then it's all over for you.

"I want to prove to the people that made the decision to bring me here that it was the right decision and prove to the manager that I'm worth a start in the team."

Evra witnessed his first match as a United player on Wednesday night at Ewood Park.

He sat alongside fellow newcomer Nemanja Vidic on United's bench as the Reds played out a competitive 1-1 draw with Blackburn in the Carling Cup semi-final first leg.

"It was the kind of fast-paced match that I was expecting," revealed Evra. "I knew the English game is very, very physical and I knew it was going to be an intense encounter - which it certainly was.

"There were no surprises there and I know that I need to be on top form and totally solid in order to be ready for my debut, whenever it comes."

Evra's United bow may come in Saturday's Manchester derby at Eastlands after Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed he has no qualms about handing the defender a starting place.

"I've no problems with that at all," insisted the Boss. "His experience gathered over the last three years at Monaco is very good.

"He's played in the Champions League final and I think when you bring that kind of experience then there's no fears about playing him in a derby game.

"As he's pointed out after watching last night, he understands that there's far more intensity in the game than he would normally get in the French league.

"Monaco play in some derby games against Nice and Marseille so he knows what a derby game entails."

Report by Gemma Thompson and Steve Bartram, at Carrington.
I'm liking Evra more every day. I have a great feeling about him

It seems SAF is looking to sign another player in the window. Can't be anything than a midfielder can it?

Who do you guys reckon/hope that we'll sign?

Thomas Gravesen is a great central midfielder, but if he doesn't join I won't cry a river, but he could do good for us.

You already know I like Mascherano, so if we signed him I'd be thrilled.

Can't come up with any other realistic buy at the moment

Aaron Lennon is far from a strong CM, but he's very young and promising. Not sure if we need him badly though.

True. That's why Mascherano would be a great buy.

Whether we will buy any more player though is another question.

I can understand Rooney's frustration. There were like two or three occasions where a city player (Jordan or Barton) came carelessly into the challenge but Bennet did nothing about it. But when Rooney did the same thing he obviously saw it, cause everyone sees everything Rooney does.

No, I'm not blaming the ref for us being down by two.

Their first was just a shocker. Not even Sinclair knew he would get the ball there, and he didn't have to do much but to kick it in the other corner.

Their 2-0 though was because Silvestre couldn't get the ball away. It seemed that he was afraid to hit the player instead. Those who claim that Silvestre will leave us got wind in their sails.

I think our new signing Evra has played well so far. He has succeeded with a lot, and I can't say he has made any noteable mistakes. He can't be blamed for any of the goals. But it's not good for a new defender to let in two (unnecessary) goals in one half. Although as I said, he can't be blamed for it.

I feel that we are missing something in the attacking. I think that something is Paul Scholes. O'Shea and Fletch haven't had their best day so far, and I think a main reason for that is that when one of them get the ball, nobody else in the team helps them out, and it has resulted in a couple of missed passes.

I'm sure we will come back in the next half. We'll just see if we will get enough chances to be able to score three goals. Ruud doesn't seem to be at his best today.
