Out Now! Mirror's Edge was released today (14th November) on the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. Once this city used to pulse with energy; dirty and dangerous, but alive and wonderful. Now it is something else. The changes came slowly at first. Most did not realise or did not care, and accepted them. They chose a comfortable life. Some didn’t… They became our clients. It's a great concept, which you already knew. It's also a good game but not without it's flaws. To sum up my thoughts on it, the IGN review pretty much nails the way I feel.
Link; IGN Video: Mirror's Edge PlayStation 3 Review - Video Review The game is always fun, except timetrial which is just infuriating when you're on for a kickass time and then you make a mistake right at the end, but the story is very short and very.... how to say... Ok - you've got this huge city that's run by a very strict big brother-esque governement with elections for mayor approaching and the assassination of one of the top candidates, "Runners" who work for clients - whom we're pretty much told are doing pretty important stuff that they don't want the government to know about, I'm pretty sure I saw something in an elevator about a Resistance group.... But all of this takes backseat to the over clichéd "I'm going to rescue my sister".. Though as I understand it, the game is supposed to be the first in a Trilogy, so maybe this is just setting the groundwork and introducing everything. The only other real problem I found was the lack of moves in Faith's repetoir (sp?), it consists pretty much of Jump, Duck, Run.. 3 basic moves to accomplish everything in the game... Yes those 3 things can do pretty much every task set to her, but an extended move list would definitely be a welcome addition to Mirror's Edge 2. Overall; Good game and shows great promise for future releases, like a rough diamond that needs polishing up to sparkle. A very solid first step to an arguably new genre of gaming. |

So far i'm up to about chapter 6, from what ive played its really good. Its definitely immersive, however i am concerned about the length, i'm trying not to rush through it because of all the warnings on how short it is, it would have been nice for it to be longer. Sure some of the later levels are bigger but the speed you race through them makes them seem rather short. It would have also been nice to have a bit more time when you aren't being chased.
I don't think the limited amount of moves is too much of an issue, maybe its just a case of if there was extra animations to spice it up a bit it would mask over it. The moves get the job done and keeps the controls simple and precise. I've noticed a few issues like grabs not registering, clipping issues (notice quite a few in the mall with the hanging baskets). Disarming is too easy to miss the grab and get beat down, it gets kinda frustrating when it holds you up on occasions you need to use it or at least use combat. It would of been nice to see "training rooms" or "challenge rooms" focused on more advanced tricks or at least letting you practice 1 or 2 of the moves without having to do the full training bit over and "race" multiplayer stuff actually meaning a race against another person.

Getting the Test of Faith Achievement and the Pro Runner Achievement at the same time. The end of the Shard is madness, it must've taken me two hours.
Without a doubt the most fun I've ever had not shooting someone in a game. |

I found that certain keys were unbindable on the numberpad. KP 7 8 9 i use to move left, forward and right, 2 for back, . for walk (but cant), + for jump (but cant), enter for crouch/slide and cant use * as use button.
Game looks nice but cant play if i cant use my originals controls for keyboard / mouse

It is a great game, however requires many patches to make it work right (some problems are still there after patch 1.0.1. Such as extreme lag during a couple levels of the game, when quad sli is enabled or physx is, game freezes on EA ad at the start. This game wasn't tested too much before it was put on the market thats for sure!

toastynugget13, We cant help it if you are completely retarted, Mybe you should go find tetris or bubble bubble and leave us to play the fustrating adult game. I am a female and I managed to complete the game, yeah I might have got so fustrated I thought about smashing my controller into my tv but I dont take it out on the nice people at EA and DICE, it aint their fault if people are to stupid to play their came. You want a fuatrating game.. Go play Shadow of Memories. Mirrors edge was a breeze compared to that.

I finished The Game(^^,) yesterday. It was a fun ride, but I am really hoping for a sequel really soon. Maybe end of this year or something about that time. It was a fun ride. Actually now I am making some videos and posting them on my youtube account.

I blasted through the game in under 4 hours on sleep deprivation after beating another game I receintly got. Don't get me wrong I am by no means knocking the game I loved it Had the Nemesis figured out when I first met them. But the games mechanics are awe inspiring there were molments when useing my headset I couldnt tell it was not me breathing hard going over a big jump, the game pulls you in that well. The ability for players to play as a pasivist was chalenging at times ( esp after jsut playing a FPS for 3 hours) but it gave it that extra challenge for me NOT to shoot everyone ,often VERY tempting. games overall lingth is not realy that bad < actuialy finished call of duty world at war in a little less time on hardened difficulty> thats what I was playing before booting up Mirror's Edge. Overall no regrets and i will be playing through again
Story: 5/10 ( cliched ) Gameplay: 9.5/10 ( could have used a little more freedom ) Concept: 10/10 Concept apication:10/10 GFX: 9.9/10 ( I liked the way the cutscenes were put in but I felt it contrasted the rest of the game alot) Replay?: 10/10 ( I think you could always find new paths) since I often spoted easier paths that were in runners vision after I passed them its that emersive you start to find your own flow) Last edited by Nydirech; 24-01-2009 at 04:37 PM.. |

Mirror's Edge is similar to games that create new genres: those games are very basic and are just the start of what you can create with such a game (in this case a first person game without weapons and you have to run/jump etc).
But that was not necessary in this case! We already know 1st person games and games where you have to wall run, jump, etc. So they could have added more complex moves, combos, and definitely (longer) alternative routes. |
