I wanted to do more with this, but once I finished playing with the colours I couldn't think of anything else to do with it without it feeling overdone. :/

That's pretty good for a first attempt! However, I'd try to make the background suit the player a bit more - the colours don't really fit, especially with the bright green text too. Have a play around with different colour schemes until you find one that fits.

Just did that.
