In the entertainment industry we see a lot of remade movies and music covers of old songs, but we never see an old video game being remade, I have a few games that I love which are old and I think would be a lot of fun playing them again but in a new version using the most recent technologies available and I believe if done right they would sell again.
I have come up with a few games I personally would like to see remade, these are old quest/advanture games I played that have good story and beautiful scenary which would look amazing using modern technology, the games are: Phantasmagoria, Sanitarium and Atlantis The Lost Tale, I will exaime what I think can be done with each game. Remake Pac Man, but in 3-D, and instead of eating dots, he goes around eating people.
Oh wait, people are too sensitive on this forum and would probably cry at that |

Depends on the game, really. It's good that they're making old games available again (e.g. Final Fantasy VII on the PS3) but I wouldn't want to see a classic remade, same way as a classic song being covered is never always a good idea.

They're better off releasing a new game in the series than a remake. A re-hash means it would not only need to have similar features but also have the same story line.
Take COD for example because it gets a lot of attention: COD4 - Won world wide awards and is easily what modern developers aspire to in terms of success. Now, would they make better sales out of COD6 if it was a complete re-hash of 4, but with better graphics, or would it be better of them to release a new game which loosely fits the feel of the old one but is not limited by it and therefore can be better? It's a no brainer. The fact is, when people suggest they want a remake, what they really want is a new game. A good example here is Theme Hospital. Lots of EA fans from the early days want to see a Theme Hospital re-make, but if it was exactly the same at a price, people would feel ripped off - what they really want is Theme Hospital 200x.

People aren't suggesting remakes of games like COD4. It's too recent.
I think this is a nostalga thing. There are games we loved as kids, but when we play them now we don't enjoy them as much because graphically we are used to so much more. It would be interesting to see those storylines repackaged with a shiny next-gen veneer. |

Then it's not a re-hash, though. Adding in a new load of features into a game makes it a new game, even if the plot of an older game followed the same lines, giving it those new features makes it a new experience and gives a different feel the the way you'd be playing it. Prince of Persia?
The retro appeal is all about the "it was great in it's day" feel to them, people spend hundreds at auction for a pac-man arcade machine because of it's simple graphics and addictive gameplay; a 3D version (which i have no doubt probably already exists) would suck. Those <OP links> game's plots were limited by their technology, there were only 5 different room variations* because that's all it could handle. A new game with better perspective, dialogue, and roaming abilities (but same plot) would be much better than a "remake", surely? A closer example to those in the OP would probably be Fallout, where fallout 1 & 2 where pretty similar to the roaming puzzle solving things, but 3 now - because it's a new game - is brilliant and has lots of fans. * Probably an exaggeration, never played those particular games.

Pokemon Gold and Silver remakes. Wahoo. These actually look good, unlike the remakes of Red and Blue, which just flopped for me.

Actually I still play the Baldurs gate series - yes its 2d top down, yes the graphics are old and terrible....but its those graphics that make it what it is - a classic! I wouldnt want to see those games re-made atall as it would ruin the whole feel of the game.

Looking forward to the new Pokemon Gold and Silver remakes, the originals were very good and the first of the series to feature the day and night cycle.
